Blast From the Past – Look #3

Time Flies: I cannot believe this jacket and scarf
are now about 31 years old!!

AHHH…memories! It is interesting how so many women have certain types of memories revolving around clothing. Just yesterday, one of you remembered the polka dot dress you had as a two year old! When I found this blue jacket amidst my closet cleaning, I just couldn’t bring myself to toss it on the thrift donation pile.

Suddenly, I was back in the late 70s/early 80s…a twenty-something jet setting communicator….traveling all around the US (I remember one two week period when I was on 13 different planes)….enjoying a job where I got to practice both of my loves (public speaking and writing)…it was a magical time for me.

I had a goal for my free time in each city….SHOP TIL YOU DROP! My idea of a souvenir was not a T shirt screaming VIVA LAS VEGAS…but rather a great looking jacket. I loved looking at my wardrobe and remembering which piece came from which city…silk blouses from Montreal; an incredible full skirt from Georgetown; a beautiful designer jacket from Bergdorf Goodman in NYC. Even today, I can remember every city and what I purchased there; whether it was Baton Rouge or Chicago.

Most of my purchases had to be thrifted because once I began having babies, my body was never the 20-something body again. However, everything about the style of some 1980s jackets was OVERSIZED. This jacket was a purchase in Las Vegas …a boutique off the strip. The fact that I can still wear it tells you that it was HUGE back then. I bought the scarf at Lord & Taylor’s in Washington D.C. around the same time. I still love the print, but it is a short scarf by today’s standards, so I do not wear it that often. I use to pair the jacket and the scarf with a beautiful blouse I bought in Montreal…which unfortunately met up with a terrible grease stain about five years after purchase.

I do not know how much I will really wear this jacket…but I do know that I may not toss it…just so every now and then I can look at it and say THANKS FOR THE MEMORIES.

“I have confidence that spring will come again, Besides which you see I have confidence in me”

Edited by Florrie Clarke of Intrinsically Florrie

Within this week’s links I kept noticing a resounding honestly in the heartfelt posts. When we blog or choose an outfit we are putting ourselves out there for all to judge, and it’s not surprising that doing the activity can have an affect on our confidence for better or for worse, especially when feedback starts coming in.

There’s also been a sense of rebellion in the air: from the emergence of the punk style to controversy over Vogue, and in the week that saw the spectacle which is the Golden Globes rises a questioning of what the red carpet is all about.

  1. Oh my gosh, I do that all the time too! For me, it's shoes. Whenever I go somewhere I buy a pair of shoes – whether they're heels or simple sandals or a pair of awesome boots – I have so many memories about where each pair comes from! Great post, and thank you so much for your support of my new blog. I really, truly appreciate it.

  2. I love all the layers in this outfit and the scarf is lovely!

So you really have a love of public speaking? Please teach me how to love it. Because it PETRIFIES me. Not that I have to do it, ever, but I was told once that it's something I may be doing in the future. And that is terrifying!

  3. Thanks for the memories! I definitely prefer the late seventies/early eighties styles — like what you're wearing in the photo — to what we were wearing in the LATE eighties. I still shudder when I recall a jacket I once purchased: bright bubble-gum pink, hugely oversized, with massive, pointy shoulder pads. (Like Carol Burnett as Scarlet O'Hara in the curtain rod dress). Yikes!

  4. I love the scarf!

And I do the same thing when I travel… especially with accessories. Some of my outfit breakdowns on my posts sound like a travelogue.

As for actual clothing that fits me now… it's all newer or newly thrifted, because I haven't been this size before the last couple years.

What's in the basement, however, is a different story. And I hope that I will have the chance to break those out again!

  5. Hey babe, I am hear to visit with a glass of wine for the 2 of us.. well, not really but would be nice!! no really, I thought I would come over with a scowl for you.. hah hah kidding.. anyway you look mahvelous– i love that brown belt.. and those dark rich colors look really really good on you!!! I wouldnt have thought of pairing royal blue and brown so you have given me a new color combo idea.. and yes, keep the jacket, it looks great on you!!!

    cheerio for now xoxo J

  6. Thanks for visiting Inpsired Design and for your sweet comment… I am now following you. I love how an item of clothing can bring you back to a certain time. xo

  7. Pam–congrats on making the list! Well-deserved. This post made me think not of jet-setting, but of my jewelry. I was organizing it today and as I handled each piece I recalled the vacation and location where I required it. A excellent way to reminisce!

  8. I love the scarf!! I use to wear a lot of accessories with my clothes when I worked in the office! You look wonderful! Following you back with GFC and wishing you a great weekend!
