In my recent closet purge, I discovered several nostalgic wardrobe pieces and items that reminded me of the past. Therefore, this week, I tip my hat to the past and go on a quest to see if these items still work or if maybe they need to stay in the dusty ancient historical records.

Back in the 1970s, fishnet hosiery was entering its second decade on the fashion scene. This trend mostly came out of the Beatles/British era and that is where the look attracted my attention as I began college. My mother hated them and was not shy about telling me that I looked like a street walker in them. But with mini-skirts, boots, and fish nets….a girl just couldn’t go wrong!!

Though not fish nets, these tights reminded me of them….so they are my first fashion reflection. I haven’t worn a patterned tight in several years and I really enjoyed wearing them today!!

In our present day world, fish nets have gained a new, clean reputation. According to an article from Yahoo….”In 2000, fishnet lost a bit of its alternativeness, and became, according to Deborah Boria, an “acceptable, sophisticated choice for leg wear.” Boria is executive director of merchandising and design at Sara Lee Hosiery, which holds licenses for DKNY and Donna Karan hosiery lines. More women began wearing fishnet hose to work, wearing them under knee length skirts”

JUST A NOTE: For all of you who like thrifting, today’s skirt was $3.00 at Goodwill!

  1. I just came from Reva's blog where the Dr. is prescribing red for the winter greys. And there you are in a wonderful red and black floral skirt. Heating things up. $3 bucks very well spent, Pam.

  2. The skirt is a nice bright pattern for this time of year. I actually bought a pair of fishnets this fall…but have yet to screw up the courage to wear them!

  3. You look fantastic beyond words with skirts. You have good legs that cannot be seen in the trousers.
You absolutely ROCK in them, yeahhhhhhhhhhhh.

  4. Did you do something to your blog? All of a sudden it loads in a quick second — Thanks!

We went to Italy some years ago and women all over Rome had fishnets on. They were a nice bump up from the bare leg, and of course I bought some.

Then I ruined the whole almost-bare leg thing by deciding that they were much more comfortable to wear if you pulled them on over top a pair of nude pantyhose. Keeps your toes from poking through.

The problem with those of us who live in DC is that we just can't leave well enough alone!

  5. I love the tights on you… definitly wear more patterned tights!

I also have a history with fishnets. I started off with a nice mock turtleneck or button-down blouse and a pair of those shirt-like shorts (this was the 90's)… not the skorts, those are only fit for golf.

I would then wear black fishnets and flats. A nice little kick to an otherwise plain outfit.

Later, I woure them with cutoffs and combat boots and concert tee shirts.
