Friend Friday: Authenticity!!

Good Morning Everyone!!

Most readers and fellow fashion bloggers value authenticity in the blogs they read. How would you describe blog/blogger authenticity? I think authentic bloggers are those who do not take themselves too seriously and are willing to share their real life around the blog. Fashion/Style is not just about clothes and the bloggers who understand that are the ones who appear more authentic and thus are enjoyable to read.

When it comes to your blog, how do you infuse it with that true authentic feeling? I hopefully come off as a 58 year old woman hoping to help other 50+ ladies enjoy and experience life. Therefore, I have to be real…..over 50 includes bungles, clenched teeth, hot flashes, incontinence, bone density scans….part of your style is how you face and deal with all of that. If I present myself as a Vogue-fashionista with a life of runways and photo shoots, then no one is going to buy into that!! My favorite reader comment has been that they find my blog to be uplifting…that comment makes me smile! Life is too short to spend it DEFEATED. I also have to be humble about the fact that I have much to learn about technology!!

Have you stopped following a blog in the last three months? Absolutely, but maybe for different reasons than some of the younger bloggers…… I am not drawn to blogs that are pretentious and too much like the fashion magazines. The appeal of fashion blogs is that you can find women just like you and learn from each other….you can find the curvy, heavier woman; you can find the woman struggling on a budget and looking for economically friendly fashion, and you can find the Baby Boomers looking to connect and develop a new personal style for the second half of the game.

We can’t communicate on our blogs something we don’t live in real life….what are some ways you try to live an authentic life? I put the picture of Lucy and Ethel on this page because so often I think I lead Lucy’s life…….in order to be authentic and not defeated, I practice a sense of humor and my faith. I believe my blog has been real in reflecting both of those without being too preachy or heavy on the second one. Taking my style and fashion up a notch has helped me to enjoy life more and have more confidence and I want to constantly send that message to other ladies!! But that also means that I must be willing to share the days that I do not feel that way and how I dealt with them. Inevitably, there will be someone who says,” thank you for saying that living with your 86 year old mother is difficult”, and they want to talk about it.

Give a shout out….What bloggers do you think are truly genuine and why? There are many in the community that I believe have become my friends and who I will read first. That is what is so great about the blogging community!! I love Terri @ http://ragsagainstthemachine.blogspot.com/; Serene @http://elegantbohemian.blogspot.com/; Collette @http://www.statementsinfashion.net/; Reva @http://revasrags2roses.blogspot.com/, the ladies of Southern Comfort @ http://southerncomfortga.blogspot.com/; Paula @http://fashionoverfifty.blogspot.com/; and Vanessa@mailto:Vanessa@http://snappyandsavvy.blogspot.com/; Bella@http://www.thecitizenrosebud.com/….so many…these and Dressing Mommy, Style Underdog, and Style Crone are women I would run to hug if I met them any where!!

I feel like we go way back…to the young days of our blogs! Lol.. Thanks for becoming a friend~ Paula

  2. I enjoy your responses. Interestingly a couple of other FBFFers have mentioned they like blogs because they aren't fashion magazines and they have the ability to see real people. I agree – I think the real life quality and the personal interaction is what makes blogs great. – Katy
PS Could you please put a link to ModlyChic's FBFF post so that all your readers can see what the others have to say about this as well? Thanks.

  3. I love many kinds of blogs, but always those that inspire me to be my best authentic selfl. I loved the Monkees then, and still do! Davey Jones!

(i especailly like the one where she is doing the commercial for the cough med. that is full of alcohol) i maneuver through life kinda like that, but sober!

  5. I love the way you embrace aging. Youthfulness and age don't necessarily go hand in hand. I was telling my hubby today that I don't dress age-appropriately and he said "what's that? You dress for who you are" which makes him a rock star in my book.

I can't even begin to list the long list of "over 40" tests I spent an entire month enduring. Dang it if I'm not going to have fun with life.

I love your previous post about being free to dress for yourself. I'm with you, sister!

  6. Hey babe!! I am a new follower and am also doing FBFF!! I love your blog and I LOVE LOVE LOVE the title of your blog.. that tells me already you are full of life and FUN!! I look forward to getting to know you better on here and seeing more great outfits and Friday answers!!

  7. There's a fine group of bloggers in your shout-out, Pam. I do agree with you that part of the beauty of a personal style blog is the real life aspect to it: we are real people, living real lives and not everything is a glossy editorial. And it is so good to see such a diverse crowd blogging: all shapes, all sizes, all ages. This is authentic style.
