Priority Number Six: Be Professional!

Fashion blogs have given me a desire to be more fun…more fashion forward…more creative…more bohemian!

But, like it or not, I am a role model to many teens and budding young journalists on a daily basis. Therefore, I must find a way to balance my “inner Cher” with my everyday life as a teacher.

In 2011, I have to remember that I must maintain a professional, confident, strong appearance. I do not have to do this every day, but there are many days that the situations I face demand it. If you look in the pictures taken from my desk, you can see the headlines on the board are serious ones from this past weekend. It is my job to teach students how a big story is handled from the inside out. There are days this is not a pleasant task as was today. Like it or not, sometimes our look determines how seriously we are taken in our profession. Occasionally, an authoritative look is needed.  While I wanted to wear something more exciting today, I knew this morning I had to take the more conservative route.  My 2011 pledge is to make sure
that I continue to take those days seriously.

While I want to be more fun this year with style, I cannot forget these professional days are necessary and I know from experience there will be more of them.

  1. It looks like you're doing a fantastic job of combining professional with classy and stylish too! I have a difficult time with that sometimes…

  2. It is an especially important job with teens to teach them that they can be professional without loosing their individuality. Way to go!

  3. I laughed too at the inner cher…tee hee. Boy, I would be bummed out having to go too professional–I mean we all have to do it but I can stretch it a little where I work now that I have established that I am not a wack job.
    You look very happy today!

  4. I would love to know what your students felt about Saturday's events. You DO look professional and I love the quirkiness of the collar on the blouse.

  5. Good eye…Anonymous…tragedy is misspelled…I put the headlines on the board every morning in between 5-6AM…and I can't ever promise to always get it right…

Terri…sadly my students came to school today not knowing a lot about the events of Saturday. When I began to fill in the gaps, show the clips, tell the stories of the victims as well as the citizen heroes, they began to get engaged and wanted to know more and more. We spent most of the day dissecting it from many angles. They were deeply bothered and particularly moved by the story of the Cristina Green (9 years old). A group of my students will be in Austin tomorrow to cover the opening day of the Texas legislature, so we also discussed what to look for in crowds and who to maybe avoid.

  6. You have a great eye – i'm telling you this a stylist. You know what you're putting together. Everything works! Keep up with great work!

Great blog btw, keep up with great work.

    Best,

    Leon

  7. You've taken a basic palette of a black suit, but jazzed it up with an awesome top and the great blue detail on the jacket – I think this is still "Cher" but maybe from "Moonstruck" (not so much "Burlesque"!)?

Thank you so much for visiting my blog and for your kind words. I really appreciate it.

    Cheers,
    Sheila

  8. I am sure that with your inner Cher out we will see wonderful thingss hehehehehe.

    Oh nooooooooooooooo WORD VERIFICATION-

  9. I love how even when you're dressing professionally, you still have stylish little details like the trim on your blouse and jacket!

  10. It can be a struggle sometimes to find that balance between professional and personal style, but I do love the challenge!

I love that you still have pretty details in your oufit (ruffles, jewelry, ect.) while still maintaining a professional, authoritative look. Good job!
