Mixing Up a Fabulous Entree

When mixing up an incredible outfit with different patterns, it helps me to think about cooking an amazing meal.
There are those of us who  are meat and potatoes eaters….we want our food separate on the plate…not touching in any way.  In this corner, there is meat…in the other corner potatoes…and in the other corner a veggie!  Most families have at least one of these eaters at the table…they are not casserole people!!
Most people who will understand pattern mixing and its success will most likely be casserole eaters.  Those who understand that by mixing certain flavors an incredible outcome can be the result.  As a cook, you begin to learn that there are foods and spices which blend together nicely…just as a stylist learns that successful pattern mixing usually happens within the same families of colors.

Maybe this analogy is a stretch, but I use it to help some understand that the mixing can be successful…just like it can be in cooking!!  But, just like with cooking, it takes practice!!

  1. I have been really struggling with pattern mixing & this analogy helped me to understand why! I am NOT a casserole girl LOL. Does that mean there is no hope for me? Let's hope not! You look great..I really wish I could get the science to this technique!

  2. I love your analogy- I'm a big fan of mixed patterns and think more people should try it- it's easier than it looks! You are rocking two of my favorite patterns, and together they make me so happy!
PS: I hope you're feeling better.

  3. You look very young in this outfit. In a really good way of course! It's very you, I think. Sorry, I missed your sickness but I am glad you're feeling better.

  4. I have never been successful at mixing patterns. I love your analogy though. My daughter is the type of eater that her foods should not touch or mix. She loves those divided plates.

  5. Your pattern mix works beautifully, and looks very patriotic! I'm sparing with my patterns, and an absolute dolt at trying to mix.

  6. Pam, I really really really like this kind of pattern mixing. As I seem to find myself commenting a lot today, I'm not good at pattern mixing. You nailed this though, and you made it look effortless! Just means you're really good at it! Hugs and so glad you're feeling better! ~Serene

  7. That's a good looking stripes/plaid mix.
I think it's easier to do when you're working with white as a base color. I also like the weights together.

I don't shop at Forever 21 because their cuts aren't right for me, but I sometimes take a look at their window displays as they're big on mixing patterns.

  8. Great take on the pattern mixing! Love the colors that you used. This is a hard one for me. And thank you for your comment — I really appreciate. Just having one of those what if days where it seems like the worst is yet to come.
