A One Million Dollar Fashion Event

Dancing on the Runway

Never have I wanted one million dollars to spend at a fashion show. Never have I cried at the conclusion of a fashion show. Not, because the clothes were fabulous…and they were. Not because the accessories sparkled….and they did. Not because the style was unique…and it was. But, because the models and their mission were all about one thing…LIFE.

Debra Hurtado (R) is the wife of George Hurtado, George Strait’s
pilot, who is in remission from cancer.

Last night, the Cure for Cancer fashion show exceeded all expectations, and brought event organizer, Carol Kaye Glaze closer to her goal of raising one million dollars for the Department of Genitourinary Medical Oncology at MD Andersen Cancer Center. Her mother’s doctor from the center in Houston was pleased to tell the audience how moved he was by their generosity.

Fabulous furs were every-
where!!

Glaze and her family from Morris Kaye and Sons Furs located in the Quarry, also had their expectations blown. The turnout was so large organizers had to scramble to find enough seats for the live auction. Terry Dickerson of Machinery Auctioneers brought his humor and expertise to the stage where prize after prize resulted in thousands of dollars raised. The extra incentive is that all Cancer Research Money is matched. Dickerson was so infectious, SA business owners in the crowd such as, Ben Adams and J Green Jewelers, tossed in extra auction items from their seats.

One raffle resulted in the win of a one-of-a-kind Harley worth $10,000 which was donated back to the crowd for the live auction, and another raffle brought one lucky winner $10,000 worth of jewels.  Auction items included furs, beach vacations, ski vacation, resturant banquets, a George Strait autographed guitar…but my favorite was an evening for 12 on a San Antonio River Barge with a private VIP tour of the San Antonio Art Museum and concluding with an incredible meal at Il Sogno Resturant downtown.

Cancer Survivors modeled for joy…
We Are Alive…were the song
lyrics!

Fabulous furs and breath-taking jewels were everywhere; however, the smiles on the faces of the runway show models were what really captivated everyone. Each model was a cancer survivor. “My mom absolutely loves modeling in this show,” said Jed Straub of his mother Joan. “She did it last year and said it was so much fun that she had to come back.”

They did not walk the traditional “model’s walk” down the runway….they danced for sheer joy to be alive. Tears flowed as all the models danced to song lyrics, “we’re alive” over and over again and then ran into the arms of waiting loved ones.    Readers, wouldn’t it be powerful to see such an event take place in cities all over the United States!!  It only takes the vision and heart of someone like Carol Kaye Glaze.

  1. Pam, I don't know if I could have made it through the whole thing! I think I'd be overcome with emotion! But THAT'S a fashion show and what fashion is all about….self expression and gratitude for what's beautiful! Big hug to you my sweet friend! ~Serene

  2. Hi Pam, what a great post. I know myself, I would've been a weepy mess by the time the show ended! So glad these strong brave ladies got to model and show everyone their beauty!

  3. What a great post! I wish I had $1m, too. I am a cancer survivor and the appreciation of life never leaves once experienced. So, if I contact this woman I might be able to organize something like this in my area? I will do that and see what happens. I have organized many fundraisers and this sounds like a great cause!

  4. Great post. It's amazing to heard about a wonderful fashion event to raise money for such great cause. I do admire all that powerful people who keep fighting against the illness everyday, they deserve all our recognition & help in their battle.

  7. Pam,
I was one of the models that night, and it was a wonderful experience. Everyone was overwhelmed at the end, and I was fighting to keep it together. Carol is an amazing powerhouse who keeps making this event bigger and bigger.
