Inspirational Woman, Inspirational Style

Inspire. That’s a great word to be sitting among the displays in Cathy Chesser’s store, Me & My House, because she is truly inspiring. Yes…she does it all. Over 50…she is a

She is not wasting one minute of her time on this earth. Me & My House is an open invitation to curl up on a cozy couch and stay a while. She has designed a business which for the last 18 years presented options to families of fabulous décor where you do not have to leave your shoes, the kids, or the pets outside. I would describe her personal style as exquisite- Anthropologie- chic –shoppe- owner look. I have known her for years and I always marvel at how cute she looks while surrounded by children and responsibilities.

“It is real easy to get into the economy doom and gloom,” Cathy said. “But that doesn’t do anyone any good.” She insists that the key to survival is to remain true to who you are. “That is my greatest challenge. Several of our small suppliers have gone under in this economy, so when I go to market there is always a temptation to do something new. But, we have a niche that I am going to protect. If I begin to buy shiny furniture like the big guys, I am going to go under because I do not compete with the bigger furniture stores. We owe it to our customers to be true to who we are.”

She has designed her business around families….her own, her employees, and her customers. “I made certain that my own family was a priority as I ran this business,” she said. I would leave every day to pick up kids and to attend their functions. I actually birthed the store at the same time I birthed my fifth child. I would lay on the couches with morning sickness and tell everyone what to do!”

Cathy also went through a reinvention, but it was early in her married life. After three months of marriage, she decided to leave her teaching degree behind and join her husband with running a new Furniture In the Raw location in San Antonio. But, unfinished furniture got boring and she desired something that represented her personality. That is where the current concept began. She also uses her design skills to assist others. Recently, she participated in re-decorating the boy’s dormitories at St. PJs School for Abused Children.  Through interior design, Cathy gave these kids a touch of home…not only with the furniture and paint selections, but with framed pictures and a completed scrapbook of their “family” at the home.

I hope you enjoyed meeting Cathy and Me & My House!  She is so inspirational!

  1. I really admire people who can walk into an attic or basement full of junky stuff and have the vision to turn it into attractive items like you've shown. It takes a special eye and a lot of elbow grease to make that happen.

I love the story about giving birth at her shop. Running your own business is a heck of a lot more work than most people realize.

Everybody sees the success but few people think about not taking a sick day off, having your children doing their homework at a table at the back of the kitchen because you can't leave until it's time to close, or worrying whether you'll be able to make your payroll.

Hats off to this inspirational woman!
