Original Design: The One I Cherish

People put prized possessions on the mantle…don’t they??

When Jill and Adrienne announced a blogger event to post our most cherished item, I almost said NO! After all, I do not really own anything that I absolutely cannot live without. I only own one original Louis Vuitton purse that my daughter and I found in a little, obscure resale shop years ago. My daughter carried it for a while and now it is in my closet.

I own no Chanel or Alexander McQueen or anything of great, great value. But, I happen to remember a quote from Coco Chanel, “In order to be irreplaceable, one must always be different.”

First time to use the tripod…almost cut off my head!

That made me think of this tunic….because it is really different. I have told the story of this garment a couple of times over the last 18 months, but for the sake of the theme, I will tell it once again. My husband went on a business trip to Las Vegas( perhaps 15 years ago), and returned with a shirt dress for me. The dress was a great print (he knew I loved big and bold) and was quite voluminous. After many attempts, there was really no way I could make it flattering. I was large and the dress made me look really, really large! But I loved the print and his heart to bring it to me. One day when I was cleaning my closet and pondering if I should just donate it, something came over me and I grabbed a pair of scissors and began to cut! I loved the pockets on the each side, so I made sure to cut just under them which actually left a point on the sides. Then I took it to the dry cleaners and got a small hem stitched in. I loved it….as a tunic and funky jacket. I would wear it more often, but it is so distinctive that people around me would think I owned nothing else.

The end of the story is…that I cherish this garment because it was originally a gift from my husband; it was my first attempt at my own fashion design; and because I really love the print!! It is not a Chanel or McQueen…but it is an original Pamela Lutrell(e) (you have to say this with a French accent, and an implied e on the end, to get the full affect!!)

 A final thought from Coco:

I am not young but I feel young. The day I feel old, I will go to bed and stay there. J’aime la vie! I feel that to live is a wonderful thing.

  2. Pam, what a sweet story behind your tunic! Isn't that just the case with our most cherished clothes….it's not because of what they look like but because of the memories they contain! You look gorgeous in it!! Hugs! Serene Oh! BTW, I always think that if I can ever buy a Louis Vuitton purse, it's the only one I'll ever need for the rest of my life! It's soooo classic and makes even jeans and a t shirt look elegant!

  3. That's excellent refashioning of a lovely piece. You would not want it to languish in the closet!
I can't pin it down to one most treasured possession, but the things I love and would never part with are heirloom garments from the 1920s and some clothes I bought at the World Trade Center less than a month before it was destroyed. My treasures all have emotional attachment.

  4. I see that your most cherished possession is yourself, and I can feel it from here.
You wouldn´t bore me if you try, my dearest Pam.
I love your wonderful top ( coming from a dress) and the shoes with your olive green nails, ahhhhhhhhh: genious.

Great job on altering that dress – you are very smart to think of turning it into a tunic.

A LV bag at a resale shop?? What a find! I almost chose my old LV tote that I have been carrying on most days since 2004. It's pretty beat up but I still cherish it immensely.
