Living In Between Runway and Thrift

Champagne taste and a Coca Cola pocketbook….
did anyone else’s parents say this to you growing up?  I heard it so much, the phrase would bring torment to me in my dreams.

So, I find it rather humorous …after two and half years of blogging…I am now a style ambassador for Harper’s Bazaar and an ambassador for Goodwill.  Gotta love it!  That is my life…loving the exquisite world of designer fashion and spending weekends seeking some of those labels in thrift shops.

I have read an occasional blog comment where women get angry about seeing expensive boutiques and runway styles.  For me, visiting beautiful boutiques and sitting at fabulous runway shows is the same as visiting an art museum….I go there to appreciate and glean inspiration from the style and creativity.

Also, now that I have my own personal style more defined, I am more likely to purchase investment pieces…every collection has a tab marked SALE on their site and at times those sale pieces are quite affordable.  And let us not forget, EBAY and Goodwill or Marshalls and Ross for a designer treasure hunt.  At the ripe young age of 59, I can now go more for quality and not quantity….I am going to continue to seek ways to make that happen…but, be assured, I still live in the Coca-Cola pocketbook…so creativity, control and intelligence are required!!
Tomorrow, I am going to take you to one of my favorite boutique discoveries of all time….a place where art and fashion reside in complete harmony!!  (Yes! They have a SALE rack)

Find out where this is….in tomorrow’s post!!
You know I rather like living in between the two worlds!

  1. Hi Pam, I too live a double life. I am continuing to mix high end designer pieces with thrifty finds; it seems to work. What I heard all the time growing up was, "You have champagne taste and beer money". 🙂

  2. fortunately life is so manifold, we should enjoy all occassions we get offered. you look beautiful in your knitted blue dress!

  3. Like Terri, I have also heard the beer budget version, but it means the same, I think. : )

You look smashing in that cape. Thanks for sharing with Visible Monday.

  4. "I have read an occasional blog comment where women get angry about seeing expensive boutiques and runway styles." — I never have understood this. There's plenty of things I can't afford. I'm not mad that they exist! Some people get hostile towards my fine jewelry even though I'm not stopping them from exploring the endless options for less expensive jewelry. There are so many choices — why get aggravated that you can't have EVERYTHING? (Besides, as the great Steven Wright said, "You can't have everything. Where would you put it?")

  5. Oh, it's pictures like this that make me bummed I live in the south. Still 86 degrees here in the day so cute sweaters and jackets still can't be worn comfortably. Love the outfit and the jewelry.

  6. "Also, now that I have my own personal style more defined…"

I'm trying to get away from gym wear and the "mom uniform" of white t-shirts and khaki bottoms. It's not easy to find a personal at 45 years old. You're an inspiration to keep looking for one.

  7. Hi Running Stitches…thanks for stopping by!! I highly recommend you pick up Stacy London's new book, "The Truth about Style!" You will be amazed at how she can help get you out of the "mom uniform." It is worth the read!!

  8. Hi Marla, You know I am in sunny San Antonio sweating right with you. Sometimes I wear these looks on Visible Monday because it is the only time I can wear them!! We are also in a heat wave and I my hope is for cooler weather on the horizon. But, I am not walking around in this outfit right now!!

  9. Pam, you look fabulous. Congratulations on being a Bazaar Style Amabassador! What a wonderful honor. That necklace in the last picture is TDF!
I hope to review the Stacy London book this week. Last week was not the best for me, so I did not get it done. It is a marvelous book.

  10. I am right there with you…savoring the joys of both the high and the lows! Since blogging I too have been more judicious in my purchasing quality pieces with a purpose…leaving behind my undisciplined ways of buying what I fancy on a pass by.

  11. Your positive attitude shows in your photos and words. I'm adjusting my own style right now, a blend of practical, beautiful and fun. Looking forward to more.

  12. This is my favorite look on you. Your pose is just perfect with the trees behind you. I like the fullness at the top of your ensemble and then how it narrows at the bottom. My favorite way of shopping is high-end and low end curious about all of it.

  13. You're having the best of both worlds, as the pop song goes! It is a paradox being connected to the two extremes of the fashion world. At the same time it must be very interesting and challenging, and certainly give you lots to write about!

Your outfit is so elegant today! The boots are great, and I love your bracelet!

I'm looking forward to tomorrows post, the shop looks very interesting – and the necklace is awesome!

  14. I am torn about high end fashion. Usually it is too specific for me too much drama. I like the low cost basics and go to the Chico's sales. There is something about the quality of their basics that I like. They wash well. I once spent 200.00 on a unique pair of shoes for me that is allot of money. I still haven't worn them too much because the look is too unique. I feel that they are too obvious. Some of the clothing I see women wearing on blogs look like costumes to me. I cant imagine people in my area wearing those outfits. Don't get me wrong I love looking at them and think they are having fun. The other issue is that if I don't spend too much money on an item I don't feel guilty if I don't want it anymore. I change my mind about what looks good on me too often. I haven't found any second hand clothing store in my area that carry truly designer looks. They all have the worn out stuff I took to SA. Besides I don't think truly designer clothing would fit me. Ever notice that Diane Von Furstenberg doesn't have anything above a size 12 on her website. I often think who is she kidding she is older than me know is she still a size 2? Okay don't answer that… Anyways love your blog great photography and you are an inspiration for me. thanks.

  15. Adrienne, you said so many things here that I would love to address at length! I so agree with you about some fashion looking like a costume..something that is important to me is wearable clothing! I do not want my clothes to wear me! and YES…so many designers do not know about sizes above 12….not my world unfortunately! Finally, I agree with you on Chicos…I have Chicos clothes that have lasted 20 years…still look great and are in style! And YOU are an inspiration to me!!

  16. we used to say champagne taste and a beer budget
    same thing right!
i am so excited for you and how far you have come
i love to look at high fashion for inspiration, creativity and revolation
