Goodwill, Gratitude, and Metabolism!!

Counsel woven into the fabric of real life is wisdom.

Thank you so much to those who gave me your thoughts on
yesterday’s post.  You have really helped
in more ways than you know.  I feel as though
you have saved me so much time by just helping me to focus  on what is most important about this blog. I
am forever grateful.  I see so many others going
to the magazine type format and I was tempted, but you have put that to bed for
me!!  Also,  I believe you were so open and honest with me
with your comments, so I do want to be open about the fact that occasionally I
plan to do paid reviews and posts.  I am
a school teacher in need of additional income, and it is helpful when the blog
brings some. But, I really promise not to put anything on here that I do not
believe will be of value to someone in the reading audience.  I have said a resounding NO to many, many
offers only because I want to protect what goes before you.   Thank you once again for all of your
opinions…I respect them all.  And welcome to all of the new readers…if you ever have any suggestions, please email me!
What I wore with my blue jacket!!
Friday I plan to do a little thrift shopping, so we will see
how that goes.  I decided to wear one of
the great wool jackets I found earlier in the fall from Goodwill.  The warmth is coming in handy now as we are
experiencing some cold weather…even sleet!!
A big deal down here.  The blue striped blouse is from thethe Foxcroft Collection.
Today, I wanted to call your attention to a new book, The Thyroid Solution Diet, by Ridha Arem, MD.
I cannot blame my weight gain on
my thyroid, but I do know that many women around me have problems in
this area.  Dr. Arem writes, “ Thyroid
hormone is one of the master controllers of weight and the touchstone of
metabolism.  In fact, the other primary
hormones that regulate your metabolism and weight – leptin and ghrelin- work
through thyroid hormone.  The Thyroid
Solution Diet has been meticulously designed to make a thyroid hormone and
leptin more efficient at burning off fat.”
In fact, he believes his diet will help us outsmart aging,
thyroid issues, menopause, and other hormone conditions which lead to weight
The book is very thorough with diet and workout
specifics.  I plan to try his Detox Smoothie:
4 small strawberries
2 Stalks of celery with leaves
1 cup of fresh spinach
½ small grapefruit
½ lime
1 clove of garlic
1 cup of parsley

He recommends sipping this smoothie before breakfast and
again before dinner to jump start our detox.
He recommends continued use of this smoothie even after achieving goal
weight.  Since I just came out of the
holidays and wedding celebrations, I feel like my system could use a good
detox!! This looks like a good book for those looking for ways to increase your metabolism!!
I also found some great ideas for “slimmer” cooking in the latest edition of . Southern Living Magazine
Have a fun Friday everyone!!
This weekend is always a little sad as I put away Christmas….I love my
decorations and the house looks so plain without them!  Oh well, on to more fun in 2013!

  1. Hi Pam
FYI: Grapefruit (which is a component in that smoothie) has been known to interfere with medication absorption etc. There was a big write up in the NYT last week I think.

On another note, I love your blog. Dont you love foxcroft blouses. I try and get them on sale – I love their no iron crisp feel.
    Have a happy day

  2. Hi Pam,

As Barbara pointed out, grapefruit can be very dangerous when mixed with certain meds, so be careful.

I feel the same way about wanting to detox. I am getting sugar the heck outta my life! And most carbs too – bye, bye!

Glad to hear you're not going with the magazine format. And I think it's great you're choosing to make a little income through blogging. Why not if they are products and services you believe in?

    xo, A

  3. Hi Pam I too am taking down the Holiday Decor this weekend!!

We will just have to keep out some pretty scented candles!

All the best in the New Year ahead!

  4. Pam, the blue shirt really brings out your eyes! I probably lost a lot of tooth enamel from all of the grapefruit I ate as a teenager trying to lose weight! I had my thyroid removed in 2006, and take replacement medication daily. I keep asking the doctor to boost my dose but she just shakes her head… 😉 It's been downright chilly here nights and mornings. Enjoy that cool weather!

  5. I've been putting away Christmas today too! It's always bittersweet but this year I"m anticipating exciting things to come so it's easier than usual. We're heading off to China in February to spend 4 months teaching English at a teacher training university so there's plenty to do in preparation for that.

Thanks for explaining the reason behind the occasional product reviews. They seemed so out of character for you but now that I understand why you're doing them, it makes perfect sense.

By the way, I love the blue flats!

  6. I've been reading more and more about how the thyroid can effect weight loss, or the lack there of,especially around menopause. Also, while you can be tested.. the tests don't accurately reflect the thyroid dysfunction. I think I'll check out the book..I'll try anything and I think
there is a correlation. Maybe it will help, I hope so. Thanks.

  7. I am severely hypothyroid- I have Hashimoto's thyroiditis which has virtually killed my thyroid as my wonderful endocrinologist has put it. I have never gained an ounce of weight as a result of it. I attribute it to getting it under control through the use of Synthroid. This smoothie looks quite healthy but I would have to leave out the grapefruit due possible interactions with my meds.

  8. I do believe that the thyroid diet could help many of us, even who clinically don't have the disease. I couldn't drink the smoothy thanks to being on Coumadin – grapefruit and spinach counteract the medicine. I do feel I'm in need of a cleanse after all the holiday junk I ate. Ugh. Gotta go find my motivation. I seem to be only motivated to find chocolate lately. xo

  9. My yoga class does a detox each spring. I usually don't follow it, it but may this year. Feel the need to clear out and start anew. That is also why I love to put away the decorations. The lack of clutter jumpstarts my attempt to simplify. That was my resolution for last year- to simplify and I still have a ways to go. You always look so put together, Pam. Lovely.

  10. You look great in blue. I'll think of you as I try my hand at weight loss this year. A detox might be just the thing for to try. I'm going low carb as I have had success with that diet before.

  11. I think I'd rather just put the spinach on my sandwich.

I've cleared the last of my Christmas cookies out this week and look forward to a weekend of getting the rest of my kitchen straightened up.

Lightened up comfort foods sound good. Perhaps you'll try some and let us know?

  12. Your going-out-to-lunch outfit looks great. Love your blog, glad you're getting a little 'me time.' We empty nesters are getting a chance now to remember what it's like to have time to ourselves! Enjoy…
