“Style without substance is unacceptable, largely because it’s boring, one dimensional.” – Tish Jett Forever Chic: Frenchwomen’s Secrets for Timeless Beauty, Style and Substance.
On Tuesday, I gave you an update on my reinvention journey. You will find the post HERE ON MIDLIFE BOULEVARD, if you missed it.
On my journey which has spanned over the last eleven years, I have learned so much about aging and transitions. There are many things which will keep us youthful and help us care for ourselves inside and outside.
Today, I would like to concentrate on the inside. Tish Jett writes about women of substance in her book FOREVER CHIC. She stresses the importance of remaining educated, current, and cultured.
“One must hold her own in lively conversation. The essence of beauty is to continue educating oneself and constantly to learn something new. Simply put: these are the keys to eternal youth. Conversation is sacred. It is an ageless, timeless pursuit shared and enjoyed with passion.”
In order to carry my I MATTER sign, it is important to never stop learning. At age 55, I began to teach myself about the world of Social Media, Social Media Marketing, Personal Branding, and technology. I read and practiced all that I could. Now, at 61, I have decided to take an online college course through COURSERA…not because I want to compete for a grade, but because I desire knowledge in the world of Fashion Merchandising. COURSERA offers top college classes from the world’s best universities for FREE! That’s right, they do not cost one dime.
I am currently a student of UNIVERSITA BOCCONI from Italy. They are dedicated to teaching classes on business, economics, and law through a multicultural perspective. My class is called MANAGING FASHION AND LUXURY COMPANIES. I am eating this up. My only frustration is finding the time to do the lectures and projects, but it is worth it to me to re-organize my schedule to get this in.
When I was 16 (ouch…45 years ago!), I was hired to work in a women’s dress shop called Skibelle’s. Though the fashions were not for teens, I loved working there and listening to the sales ladies assist their customers. This was my beginning to fashion retail and though my career path has been one of communications, I have always had a heart to learn more about the industry. I am not exactly sure what I will do with all of this knowledge, but I do know that it has energized me to learn. My first project is to pick from one of three annual reports given us from the fashion industry and to analyze their business models according to what we have currently been taught.
What class would you take if you could return to school and take any class available? Remember….I MATTER…and so do you …stay educated, current, and cultured for you and for others.
