The Importance of What We Wear Over 50

In San Antonio, Phyllis Browning is known for the real estate empire she built.  She founded PHYLLIS BROWNING COMPANY as it’s founder and President for 19 years, and since 2008 has served as its CEO and Chairman.  Her daughter took over the company and Phyllis has more time as mother of three and grandmother of six, community leader, philanthropist, and still handle listings.

She was recently featured in the SAN ANTONIO BUSINESS JOURNAL written by Nancy Preyor-Johnson as a local Legacy Leader, and here is what caught my attention after discussing the changes in Browning’s roles:

“And she certainly hasn’t given up her polished, professional look – even outside the office.  ‘I will not even go into the grocery store if I am not dressed,’ Browning said. ‘I sit in the car and tell my husband he has to go in.’
Her reasoning? It’s all about garnering respect. ‘People look up to you more if you are dressed professionally. Real estate agents should be respected, not looked at as a sales person to avoid,’ she said. ‘If a doctor dressed in tennis clothes or an attorney in jogging clothes, you would not want to give them your business. It’s the same in real estate.'”

This is how successful people over 50 think!

Even more to consider… from one younger…yet, so wise…

  1. Very interesting. I agree that it is nice to be put together, but society is getting more casual. Seeing your doctor in jogging clothes might make you think he is practicing what he preaches so it might not be so bad. Just a thought.

  2. I agree with you, Shari, that the circumstances are important. I think you are right that if you run into your physician after a workout, they are practicing what they preach! I once had a doctor years ago who was very overweight and kept trying to get me to loose weight…the message did not resonate well. There has to be balance with all messages. Thanks for stopping by!

  3. I agree Anna. That is what I am learning now that I am not in an office as much. I still look great, but not have to look business professional every day.

  4. I am now my own brand as a professional blogger and even when I run an errand, I must think of how I want to portray my brand. I always run into someone when I do not wear makeup, so I have learned to just look my best at all times. It makes the whole day go better. Thanks for stopping by Patti!

  5. You know, this is kind of a revelation for me in the last 6 months or so… I spent probably the last 25 years with my focus being tunnel vision on raising kids and working around kids (all ages), with the bulk of my wardrobe being jeans and tee shirts (and really just buying something that fits, but not thinking about style or even trying anything new). I still love the kids, but am enjoying this very concept of just putting in a little extra effort. Its kind of funny honestly the response you get, all positive… something as little as adding a bracelet or some lipstick (I don't have much history in makeup) and the response is significant. Loved the video, very encouraging and inspiring.

  6. I can relate. I won't even go out to cut my grass looking sloppy. The first thing I do when I get up, even on the weekends, is put on eye makeup, just in case. You never know who you'll run into, and even if you don't, it's your personal signature when you're out.

  7. Every time I see you, you have looked beyond put together…very nice. So I think you easily are practicing this, Brenda! Keep being an example to women in San Antonio.

  8. I always feel like I get more accomplished at work when I'm in business attire. Sometimes casual is nice, but for the most part I just feel more productive when I dress more professionally.

  9. I have so many options to choose from (lucky me) and I don't have a job which has too many dressing restrictions. In the Netherlands, the professional dressing code is much more lenient anyway.
