Hit Your Style Sweet Spot: Dresses for Women Over 50

Welcome to a fun collaboration with Jennifer of A Well Styled Life and Pam of over50feeling40.  We desire for all of us… the fabulous women over 50 …to look and feel our best each and every day.  After years of blogging for this audience, we have heard from so many of you about your discouragement and despondency when you look in the mirror every morning.  But, we both know just how transformative style can be, and hope to encourage you right here each week.  We want to see all of us empowered with strength, joy, and confidence.

‘Tis the season!  Graduations…weddings…showers…luncheons…and for me, a gender reveal for my third grand child due in September.  The warmer weather brings many opportunities to wear a dress!

I have already heard from two readers with concerns about sleeveless dresses and their over 50 legs!  I like a sleeveless dress with a lightweight cardigan like I am wearing here.  The cardigan and dress are in the MAY JJILL COLLECTION.  I really want to purchase more dresses…they are such a great way to dress my style up a little more, and still be cool in summer heat.  And with all the options now out there to cover our arms, we need not worry about the sleeveless designs.

Both JJill garments are lightweight and perfect for warmer weather.  This is just one option for a sleeveless dress, and the cardigan would also work well with pants and a sleeveless top. Linen is great for casual events.

For my legs, I use a self tanner lotion…of course, I just started to do this so my legs are pretty white still.
I like the TANTASIA BY JANE IREDALE  It is excellent and getting a lot of media attention.

Also, JJill is featuring this FUN LINEN TOTE IN JJILL SIGNATURE LINEN as a their latest offering to raise money for the Compassion Fund.  100% of the net proceeds from their exclusive Compassion Fund tote bag will provide support to community-based organizations that help disadvantaged and homeless women become more self-sufficient.  Great idea!  Thank you JJill!

I used it to carry one pink baby gift and one blue baby gift to give to my daughter-in-law for the new baby as soon as the big reveal took place! It was fun to do this on Mother’s Day Weekend.

And….
Of course, we are thrilled to have a little girl join our two super special grandsons to make three!  What a cute threesome they will be!
Happy Mother’s Day to all the mothers and grandmothers…and mothers-to-be!

Now, let’s go see what JENNIFER AT A WELL STYLED LIFE is wearing!
Disclaimer:  JJill provided clothing and a tote for this post, but the words, photography, and styling are my own!

  1. I love dresses for their ease of styling and wear them all year. I have sweater shrugs in many colors for warm weather, and have dresses with sleeves for winter. Just love wearing dresses. Where I work no bare legs are allowed, which to me is great since I personally think stockings, when matched with skin tone, look much more polished. Glad to see they are making a comeback! Congratulations on your new granddaughter! Bet you can't wait to see her!

  2. I so agree with you, Karen…I really prefer stockings and I am not a fan of my legs! But, in South Texas, it is so warm, I think the majority has won the bare leg battle. So glad hose are making a comeback and when I am in a more professional meeting, I always wear a sheer pair…it just looks better. Thanks!

  3. Congrats! Congrats! A girl. I hope mother and daughter are happy and healthy for many, many years to come!

  4. Congratulations of the forthcoming grandchild. I now have 3 grandsons. They are a great joy. I have a similar shift dress must get it out of storage now our weather has warmed up.

  5. You look lovely Pam, the dress is fab and works very well with the cardie. your necklace is the perfect addition! Congratulations on your granddaughter 🙂 hugs xxx

  6. congrats on another grandbaby (and a pink one this time!) it's just such a special time of life isn't it? And you look great in a dress btw x

  7. I do like JJill, and their linen. Congrats on the granddaughter! I used to say, "We couldn't buy a girl in our family." Then my son asked me not to say it anymore because his oldest son asked him if they could! lol.

  8. Hi Pam! I love your blog! I have been reading through the early days of your blog and looking at your pictures… you have shared lots of great information over the years! I especially love the length of your hair in 2011! You look so young and vibrant and that hair style really looks nice on you! I go back and forth with longer and shorter hair all the time. Do you think you will ever go shorter again? Thanks again for all the great style information!

  9. Yea! A girl!
I wear dresses and skirts all the time. I'm tall and I do need some extra length in my clothes so I have to do some searching to find things long enough and look in proper portion. I sew, and dresses or skirts are usually not too difficult to make, depending on the pattern. I like that I can control the fabric, length and color. I am very pale, and struggle with what to do with my legs. I
have some veins. The norm where I work is bare skin legs with dresses/skirts, it's humid here in Nebraska too, but I don't feel right with bare skin so I tend to wear hose. You look great in your dress, it's a winner.

  10. Hi Minday, that's for following! I actually love my hair longer and for now want it to stay, but I take all opinions into consideration. Thanks so much!

  11. I am never really comfortable with bare legs Amie…so I completely understand. It's great that hose are making a comeback. Have a wonderful week in Nebraska!

  12. Totally understand the hesitation about showing bare arms and legs so early in the season, but I really don't want nylons/pantyhose to come back in, yuck! The real solution is for everyone (myself included) to get used to seeing older women/plus size women's bare legs and arms. I have to say the younger generation has a better time with this, so there is hope. And to show that great minds think alike, I just styled this same long cardigan from J Jill over on my blog if you'd like to pop over!

  13. Congratulations on your new granddaughter! It's so much fun to shop for baby girls! I have 8 granddaughters and 1 Great granddaughter! We also have 2 grandsons and 1 great grandson. We are blessed!

I never wear sleeveless and rarely wear dresses with exception of a couple of maxi dresses. I will probably not wear panty hose again even if they do come back! Dressy pants will have to work! LOL!

  14. Congrats on the new grand girl, I have 5 and it is wonderful. I love dresses and would wear them all the time but I get so tired of wearing a cover with them. Could someone somewhere realize we over 50 women would like to have some sleeves and length on a dress, without going maxi. lol My kingdom for a denim dress with sleeves and enough length to cover my hinny. lol
