Dressing Women 50+ for Weight Fluctuation On Hit Your Style Sweet Spot

Welcome to a fun collaboration with Jennifer of A Well Styled Life and Pam of over50feeling40.  We desire for all of us… the fabulous women over 50 …to look and feel our best each and every day.  After years of blogging for this audience, we have heard from so many of you about your discouragement and despondency when you look in the mirror every morning.  But, we both know just how transformative style can be, and hope to encourage you right here each week.  We want to see all of us empowered with strength, joy, and confidence.

This is a little difficult to write about… since 2010, when I began to blog, I have shared with you a journey of my ups and downs of weight loss and gain.  I know there are more of you out there.  The ones who are over 50 and still struggling with losing weight once and for all.

Just when I think I have the battle won, a life event turns things around and back it all comes.  In the past three years, I have been down 30 lbs and now have gained back 20!  So many reasons, health, lifestyle changes, stress eating, lack of self control…you name it.  The battle goes on…

There are gorgeous, thin over 50 fashion bloggers…and I am happy for them.  But, I would guess there are some of you in my camp…you struggle with the fluctuations…up and down…up and down…  We are still gorgeous and look amazing…but we all know we have some work to do.

I am so thankful for a brand like JJILL.  They give me options which look good; are comfortable; flattering; and fit well when I am going up or down my range!  I am building a workable, capsule wardrobe from JJill which helps me create many different styles that fit my life!  The column dressing and elongating looks are flattering no matter where I am on the spectrum.  When I wear clothes like this, I am actually inspired to take my healthy eating plan more seriously.  Dressing the body I have and looking good, keeps me with the vision to keep on keeping on.

These WEAREVER SMOOTH FIT SLIM PANT have a wide band which works if I am five pounds up or down…and are stylish with an ankle length, and the knit is so soft and comfy.

The cardigan is very lightweight and works for evenings or inside cold air conditioned buildings

Four pieces here are from the JUNE CATALOG, and the leggings in the second outfit, I have owned for months.  Wonderful collection…I cannot say enough good things about it.  My husband loves the top look with the asymmetric tunic  with white at the bottom.

I really believe I am going to conquer this issue in my life some day.  I will finally eat right and move the right amount to make it happen.  Until then, it is great to have clothing which helps me to look and feel my best while I move around the scales.  I do hope my time of going up the scales is over.  I know what to do …just need to make sure I do it!

Now, let’s go see what advice JENNIFER OF A WELL STYLED LIFE has for dressing for weight fluctuations! If you have thoughts, please share it here!

Remember: No matter what issues you struggle with, always take time to look and feel your best…because You Matter!

  1. First of all, thank you for your honestly, because yes, others of us struggle with the same thing (speaking personally.) I love JJILL for this reason and am building quite a collection of pieces. No matter where I am on the scale, the pieces I have fit (typically within 10 lbs. either way). They are both flattering and forgiving. The other day I wore a pencil skirt and someone asked if I'd lost weight. And my mom wondered if I was eating right. I have gained 10 lbs., so there you go. I am sold on that brand! Love what you have on. Truly Pam, I appreciate your blog since I have seen the ones where they seem to be "in your face" with being thin, and you are showing us how to be fashionable no matter where we are in our weight journey. Thank you for being real!

  2. Those JJill pencil skirts are awesome…I have a couple of them and they are so flattering and comfortable. Thanks for the encouragement, Karen. It doesn't do me or readers any good to try and hide the truth. But, I am looking forward to the day I can hopefully tell you I am living in a healthy weight range I (and my doctors) are happy with. Thanks for being here…

  3. I agree with Karen! Thank you for your honesty! There are many of us over 50 and over 60 (I'm 66) who struggle with our weight, and it's inspiring to see someone with the same issues looking so chic. Thanks, Pam!

  4. I think it is very important to have outfits in your wardrobe that look good when your weight goes up or down a bit (which I think happens to most, even those we sometimes think have no "issues" with their weight).

I've always been an emotional eater and have tried to control it in different ways over the years. A food-based cleanse with the focus on emotional well being helped me a lot, and I was doing great for over two years. Then my dad suffered a major stroke last year, and I didn't take care of myself the way I should have… I've just started to make myself a priority again. You are not alone, Pam!

And you always look fabulous and have great style!

    Happy Sunday!

  5. I love that tunic with the white bottom too!! You look fabulous Pam, always do. It is so hard on our confidence to be heavier than we want..then we lose the weight and have to deal with sagging skin! Keeping it off has always been my challenge too. Column dressing is so very helpful. I'll have to check out J.Jill more often.

  6. We will all go down this road together! Thanks Andrea! You always add so much to the conversation…each time I have a set back, I try to pick myself up and start again! We can do this!

  7. This idea has seen me through the last 12 years and helped so much with my reinvention! Some days it is more challenging than others..but always works. Thanks for stopping by Carol!

  8. I struggle with the ups and downs so much. I eat my feelings far too often. I have gained a lot of weight this last year. My husband was diagnosed with bladder cancer(He is doing great now!)on top of already having heart issues and COPD, our youngest daughter who suffers from some emotional issues got pregnant and had a lot of issues with the pregnancy resulting in a premature delivery and a 4 pound baby(She is 7 months now and doing very well)with no Dad or any help. She has struggled to take care of herself and now a baby too. I am praying for a better less stressful year! I have lost and gained the same weight over and over again. Very frustrating. I appreciate your honesty so much. We are bombarded with unrealistic images of how we are supposed to look. It is nice to have real people reminding us that we can look good no matter what our size. The J JILL Wearever line is my absolute favorite! The pieces can go dressy or casual and are great for travel. Keep up the good work Pam! Sorry for the long post!

  9. Never apologize for a long post…your comments are so welcome and I am certain help others. I also eat my feelings way too often, so I understand. Thank goodness we can look good and feel good while on this journey…I appreciate you sharing your story!

  10. I lost 30 lbs in a few weeks of illness where I could keep nothing down and didn't want to eat anything anyway. Then I had my gallbladder removed, and a week later I realized I was starving. So I began to make up for lost time. Okay, so I gained 25 of the 30 lbs back. But you know what? I'll keep it on rather than go through that again thank you very much! 🙂

  11. I so hope you are feeling better now, Shirley…you have been through a lot. I completely understand why you would say you will keep it on. Take care of yourself and thanks for sharing.

  12. Hi Pam I read your post today about weight. My pre—blog career was as a qualified coach specialising in NLP and linguistics. I just wondered if you did not use words like battle, struggle and conquer how your relationship with your weight might be different? Just a thought.
Personally I have found that making friends with my "gremlins" (whatever they might be) has been more effective.

  13. I love this outfit, dressy and comfortable at the same time. I struggle with eating right as well but you are an inspiration to try harder.

  14. Pam, you look great no matter what your weight. As a long time reader of your blog I have followed your ups and downs with this and I feel for you. I am a vegan lifestyle coach and I help people get off this roller coaster by eating a whole foods, plant-based diet. It's an entire change away from the Standard American unhealthy diet. I recommend the movie Forks Over Knives to you and your readers. The issue, as we all know is not only looking great (which you do) but being healthy and avoiding disease as we age. If you'd like to know more, please let me know. And best to you always 🙂

  15. You look amazing. Those clothes really suit your shape and I love the way it is casual but could still really look great on a night out. I struggle to dress myself. Being tall doesn't help but growing up as a tomboy and never really losing my love to jeans and a t-shirt really doesn't help.
