Hit Your Style Sweet Spot: Confident (Not Frumpy) Grandmother Style

Welcome to a fun collaboration with Jennifer of A Well Styled Life and Pam of over50feeling40.  We desire for all of us… the fabulous women over 50 …to look and feel our best each and every day.  After years of blogging for this audience, we have heard from so many of you about your discouragement and despondency when you look in the mirror every morning.  But, we both know just how transformative style can be, and hope to encourage you right here each week.  We want to see all of us empowered with strength, joy, and confidence

For years now, PROJECT RUNWAY has been one of my favorite television shows….I love to see the creative process, and the final runway production…however, I have a big beef with them.  Each season, the messages are more and more pronounced that bad fashion is called GRANDMA STYLE.  Even Tim Gunn will say, “It’s too grandma, make it work.”  With all do respect to Tim, Heidi, and the designers…STOP GIVING GRANDMOTHERS A BAD RAP!  Many of us love to look cool, stylish, confident, and fun!  Frumpy fashion is not grandmother fashion!

I am a proud grandmother and it is not a pronouncement I must look frumpy the rest of my life!  Au Contraire! This look is one of my new favorites and, are you sitting down, it costs $4.99!

It is a beautiful, silk, designer dress…obviously once very expensive…and I found it at my local GOODWILL SA.,,…the best vintage shop in town.
I decided to add the leggings and leather flats for a more modern look. Dressing “vintage” is not frumpy either, it is all in how you style it.

And I even believe my confidence owned the room at a recent fashion luncheon when wearing this same outfit.  The designer is STEVE FABRIKANT.  It seems his last collection was 2009, and sold through Saks Fifth Avenue.

Confidence is the key to being a modern, not frumpy, grandmother and taking time for ourselves.  As I have said before I MATTER…and when I take care to look and feel my best, I will be my best for my grandchildren.  Also, I want to be someone who has fun and is known for a smile!

This dress was a perfect fit for my ARTFUL HOME MARIE NECKLACE. They seemed made for each other.

Choice of trendy accessories will also keep us stylish and modern.

Because I am a grandmother, I am not automatically frumpy and an example for bad fashion.  I reject that label for all of us.  Come on Project Runway, call the looks frumpy or antiquated, but please stop dragging the grandmothers of the world into bad fashion.  If you would like to tell Project Runway what you think, here is their FACEBOOK PAGE.

We rock! Now, let’s go see how JENNIFER OF A WELL STYLED LIFE is representing fun, stylish grandmothers!

San Antonio, you will find amazing, vintage style at GOODWILL SA!  Take some time and go on a treasure hunt.

Have a Wonderful Week!

  1. Well said, Pam. I know for a fact that I am more stylish as a grandmother than I was as a young mom, far more. I resent references to "mom" and "grandma" style in such a negative way. As midlife women we have truly come a long way, so give us our due!!! Thanks for stating it so well!

  2. I'm not sure if my previous comment went through. So this may be a duplicate…

That's a beautiful dress, Pam! And you look absolutely amazing! And what a deal you got!

I think there are so many examples of stylish grandmas, and it's time for the negative language to go away!

  3. I have been designing clothing for women over 50 since 2002. It has been such a pleasure. They are stylish, love color and have an eye for good taste. They are unique, experienced, full of ideas and simply just ROCK!

  4. I have heard them say this on PR many times and never thought of how insulting that is. I agree with you. You look lovely and that dress is a real find. It looks wonderful with the leggens.
