My New Style-the-Jacket Experiment
When I attended the recent Spring Trend fashion show, I noticed the majority of styles included a jacket just over the shoulders …you can see other pictures HERE. In fact, the Marketing Director from Neiman Marcus who moderated the evening also wore her jacket on the shoulders. A couple of days later, I received my new catalog in the mail from Chicos and it looked like this…
So, I get it, perhaps this is more of a styling trend this year. Now, I know this styling is nothing new, but to see so much of it at once, intrigued me. I have always believed a jacket worn this way communicates confidence, power, and strength. It seemed a good fit for my current job, but I still wasn’t sure if it made sense for my busy life…so I conducted an experiment of wearing the style several days in a row. I started with the looks you saw HERE on Sunday…. and followed two more days….
Here is what I learned:
1. With my body type, it is difficult to do this and not appear larger. My chest looks larger and it widens my shoulders. Perhaps if I was smaller it would look better on me.
2. At least two of the jackets kept falling off when I would move from my desk. The last one, a heavier fabric, stayed on the best.
3. I feel more confident and powerful actually wearing the jacket rather than placing it back over the shoulders.
4. It might be a good idea once a month with the right jacket.
Are you a fan of wearing your jacket this way…would you share why or why not? Are you more likely to try it if you see it styled often in Spring Fashion media?
Please share your thoughts about this as a styling technique….
First, I adore you. You try things so we don't have to 🙂 I love love love this look on others. It looks polished and sophisticated and sartorially spectacular 🙂 but instinctively I know I could not pull it off
I have noticed that rend as well . . .I assumed it would be great for still shot styling, but not practical in real life. I am sure mine would fall off every 2 minutes – LOL. It does look nice though, showing more of the top you are wearing underneath.
I would worry the jacket would keep falling off every time I moved! Not sure this look is for me, but it looks good on you!
I think it looks nice, but I know my jacket would be falling off every five minutes! Good for a pose I guess, Just another marketing gimmick. x

PS Pam I would love you to join my link up on Thursday evenings UK time. Would be great to have you there x
I am happy to be the tester…most times! I agree it looks great…that is why I decided to test it. I think these experiments are fun and appreciate the support!
They do fall off a lot…it is a type of juggling act! Thanks for the comment Hillary.
You are sweet to say that Shari…but I still think I look wider when I do this. I feel like wearing a well tailored jacket is more flattering. Thanks so much!
Thanks for the invite, Vanity…I will do my best to remember tomorrow.
I, too, think this look is attractive, but impractical. Along the same lines is the "pop the collar" look. It always looks so sassy to me in photos, but doesn't work well for me in real life. Hair inside the collar breaks the line of my hair. Hair outside the collar affects the line of the collar. And I never see women wearing this look during the course of their busy days.
I think this great look would work for going out to a restaurant, where you are just sitting, not moving around. Kind of in the same category as high heels ??
Not for me either and I have very broad shoulders. I'd rather wear a cape and feel dramatically confident. This trend will pass me by.
Good point…I don't see "real life" women doing this during a work day. Thanks for pointing that out.
In fact, I have done this on an evening out…this is a good way to look at the style…as a special event or evening style.
I know it makes me look wider…and that is what I dislike the most about it…so we are on the same page!!
I think it looks so stylish, always have. Very chic but on me I'd be losing it in the street or leaving it behind on a chair.
As Lizette said, if I were just sitting somewhere & not moving about, it might work for me. I can't imagine try to do anything with my jacket like that, including eating. I'm sure I would be constantly checking to make sure it was still in place & that would make me self-conscious & distracted.
Wearing a jacket that way is very chic, but difficult to maintain and move about without constantly checking to make sure it's in place. By the way, the picture above of you in the bright blue top with a single strand of pearls — Gorgeous!
I accidentally sat down on it a couple of time! It does look chic though. Thanks Anna
Good point, Becky about feeling self conscious…I only want to be confident when I go out and not fuss over details. Thanks!
You are so sweet, Judy…thank you! I love that shade of blue…
I like this look a lot. However, as you said, it's difficult to keep things in place during a work day. What works on a runway or a photo shoot doesn't always translate to practical. I think this is why I like capes and even ponchos so much. You get the look without all the hassle!
You look very nice wearing your jacket either way. BUT I personally prefer to just put the jacket on.
