Eye Makeup Over 50…Make Your Own Rules

A few years ago, I decided to give up and make the big choice to wear glasses, literally, all the time.  That was when I also decided my glasses would be come a part of my style and my branding.  My grandson, Luke, doesn’t like me to ever take them off.  That is how he knows me.  However, because I wear them all of the time, I wear more eye makeup in order to get them to pop.  I have had many “experts” tell me that women over 50 should not wear a lot of eye makeup…but I have created my own rules, which suite me!  So, here is my makeup, part 2 and all about my eyes…..

I start with my brows and I really love this Loreal Paris Brow Kit.  My brows have a lot of gray in them so my stylist will color them when I go in each month…but this little magic kit keeps me going in between and stays on all day.  It is perfect.  Next, I take my foundation sponge and touch a little leftover from the day before on my eyelids to act as a primer for the eyeshadow.  The serum foundation is perfect for this.

The base eye shadow is a Bobbi Brown Cream Eye Shadow in Suede.  It is my favorite color and isn’t available in stores right now.  You have to go to Amazon for it.  It lasts on my eyes all day and it lasts in the little container a very long time.  I have only replaced it once in about four years.  The makeup technicians at Bobbi Brown taught me so much about eye color and how to make my own eyes stand out.  I have hazel eyes.  i have seen them often when they look completely yellow/gold.  But, I prefer them to look green..so, as I was taught, I enhance my eyes with purple.  I put purple shadow in the crease. And also….Wear purple eyeliner…which I put at the base and underneath my eyelashes…I also put a little on my lower lashes at the end.  It is a beautiful eggplant purple.  If you do not know how to enhance your eye color, then it is worth the trip to the makeup counter just to learn how to bring out your beautiful eye color.  Bobbi Brown Long Wear Eye Pencil

Out of everything here, I change mascaras the most.  I love some of the more pricey ones.  But, currently, I really like this new Loreal Butterfly Sculpt mascara.  It has a small comb-like brush and spreads out my lashes as it makes them longer.

For me, for now, wearing all the eye make up is a part of my confidence and I will continue with it for now.  Has anyone else been told not to wear eyeshadow or eyeliners after age 50 or 60?  Remember…you can create what works best for you!

Keep Smiling!

  1. I keep seeing that recommendation that older women should not wear so much makeup, specifically eye makeup. I can’t imagine a time in my life when I will ever give up my eye makeup. Your routine is actually very simple, but effective from looking at your pictures. Mine is similarly simple, takes not a lot of time to do, but I need to have my eyes stand out and can’t even imagine using less eye makeup. Brows fade, eyes in general ‘fade’, it is so easy to look washed out at this age! Why give up what works? I’m with you. I don’t look clownish and fake, just enhancing my eyes, exactly like you are doing. My mom stopped using eye makeup a couple years ago and it aged her tremendously. I never did understand the thinking that we should cut back or go without. I’m all for enhancing positive features!

  2. I wear more makeup now than I ever did when I was younger. I like adding a bit of colour to my eyes especially because it makes me feel more “vibrant” – and as a receptionist I’m the face of the business so I think it’s important to look bright and “happy”.

  3. When my eyelashes started to thin out, I began using Latisse. I know it’s pricy, but I really like the way it helps my lashes to grow/fill out and darken. I’ve yet to try the OTC lash growth products – any experience with them?

  4. These are such great tips! Thank you, Pam! I just started wearing glasses all the time, so this helps me lots!

  5. I’ll be wearing eye makeup as long as I can because it also gives me confidence. When I wear my glasses I do use a slightly heavier hand with the liner and shadow so it shows.I love comb-like brushes on mascara too! It cuts down on clumps.

  6. Great information and I needed this. I do have some Bobbi Brown eye shadow in lavender, I think. Will start using that again. I also have my brows died periodically and use a Clinique brow enhancer. The eyes have it! Thanks.

  7. Thanks for sharing with us about Latisse, Michele. I have not had any experience with them…sorry I cannot help there.

  8. Thanks Pam,
About to head to Bobbi Brown counter for an overdue update. I have a hard time with mascara as I have a tear duct issue, but I am 70 (say what?)and I have been feeling it!
You gave me a great reminder that age is just a number.

  9. Good point. The “rules” aren’t right for everybody! I’m always up for a consultation from the professionals and have had a great experience with Bobbi Brown.

  10. Thanks for sharing this. I am going to try some of your suggestions. I always wear eye makeup unless I am working around the house. I like how I look with it on especially since I wear glasses all the time. It drives me crazy when people decree these rules about what we can no longer do! I’ll walk my own path thank you!

  11. I know! I hate when people declare me old at 64! Have some fun with this and pump up your eyes behind the glasses…hopefully, you will like it. Thanks for stopping by!

  12. It is ridiculous to say that older women should give up their eye make-up. They should not!! But they should soften it…. soft grays and browns instead of black eyeliner and neutral shadows with a “touch” of color gives a subtle look without any harshness I watched the video of the older model who recommended we give it all up. Frankly, she would have looked better with a little mascara.

  13. I would look so washed out and I am just not ready to do that! Thanks Suzanne for stopping by!

  14. Hi Pam , I have a problem I do not see addressed anywhere. My eyelids are so moist / greasy ,regardless of what I have tried as a base to keep liner and shadow on – nothing stays on !
Have you any information/ helpful suggestions ? I am about to turn 68 and have green eyes and definitely appreciate your take on wearing eye makeup .
I also have wondered whatever happened to Jennifer and her blog ?

  15. Christine, no one has asked about this and I do not know any advice at this moment, but let me see what I can find out. I will do a little research for you and I hope I can bring you some suggestions. Jennifer is still going strong. She has become one of my dearest friends actually. Her blog https://www.awellstyledlife.com/ is still thriving…she is a chic and classy lady enjoying a retired side of life.
