Fashion Over 50: Slim With A Unique Jacket

We started a conversation yesterday on column dressing and tips for slimming down.  Since I do dress often in a solid neutral color underneath, I look for ways to make the looks more interesting and still fit into my style messages….what I want to communicate with my style. An easy way tp slim down a look is to wear a fitted jacket with well placed seams.  Sometimes I button this jacket, but I wanted to keep the column seen for purposes of discussing column dressing this week.

This was a jacket which caught my attention during Chico’s sale this past summer.  I thought it looked interesting…maybe a little bit ELVIS…but I noticed what a high customer rating it had…the comments were very helpful and favorable.  I decided to try it, knowing if it did not work, I would take it back to a local store.I was pleasantly surprised.  I encourage you to read the comments…often they do really help. Most companies will allow the negative ones also.  A jacket looks great with a pencil skirt and can be so slimming.  I also wear pointed toe flats often because the elongated toe is also a slimming technique…keeping the eyeline where you want it.This jacket also looks really good with a white blouse underneath.  I can do so much with it, but for today, it is the statement jacket on top of the column.  Look below for ideas for statements…and share any other slimming techniques you know of when dressing!

KEEP SMILING!

  1. Pam – this is a really lovely look for you. You mentioned that you like the jacket with a white blouse. I have very few blouses in my wardrobe because of the “gap” factor. Do you have a favorite brand that fits a real woman?

  2. I agree with you that column dressing, a cousin to monochromatic dressing, is slimming. Also looks simpler and more elegant to my eye. One caveat that I have when going for this look is that for those of us who are not a tiny size, a longer jacket looks much better. When the jacket is shorter (at the palm or above) as opposed to fingertip length, the jacket begins to look square, i.e. as wide as it is long. That is not slimming and has the added disadvantage making you look shorter as well.

  3. You look beautiful as always Pam! I always read the comments since they are helpful. Have a great day! Annette

  4. Thank you, Pam, for a reminder to allow the column to show. I have a tendency to cover the column and defeat the purpose. You look very nice and I especially like the jacket and necklace (which allows the column to still be seen 😉 You’re an inspiration! Linda

  5. I love the pointed toe flats you wear often and agree they do give a more slimming look. However, I find it almost impossible to find pointed toe flats in a wide width. Do you know of any brands that offer this?

  6. Try Rockport and let me know. I will look around and write about it if I find some. And let me know if you do…we can be a research team!

  7. Thank you , Linda…you are so kind. The column needs to show for the affect. But you just don’t want it to show too much. Thanks for being here.

  8. I agree Anita..is takes a lot of trying on in the dressing room to get the lenght just right. I do love a longer jacket though. Thanks for sharing the concerns as well.

  9. I would probably wear leggings with it and maybe even a vest. I have a long tunic type sweater and it looks great with leggings or knit pants. Then I would wear a long necklace. I hope that helps.

  10. I like Foxcroft Blouses the best and they have all sizes. They fit so well and have flattering seams…they have a nice selection of no iron and tunic blouses.

  11. Ulta sells a double stick tape that fits in between the buttons on your blouse to help hold it together. And I have a stretchy camisole in nude and black that I wear to help camouflage any gapping. If it gaps , no skin or bra is showing.

  12. I have a small tip to share. When I wear flats, my foot is exposed more and since I rarely wear hosiery , my feet are so white and every vein shows. So I read about a L’Oréal ‘s Sublime Bronze which is a box of tanning towelettes that I use like a makeup removing towelette that leaves you with a light tan after using it once or twice. Each time you use one your tan gets one shade darker so it is easier to control how tan you want to look. Now I am not so embarrassed ! Just thought It may be helpful to someone .

  13. The jacket, necklace, and shoes are soooo fabulous that it’s easy to forget that the black column of the simple top and unfussy pants make it possible for those items to stand out. The setting of a ring enhances the jewel just as the landscaping in the front yard projects the house even more.

  14. Hi Pam, do you have another resource for the red shirt that is in your blog as they are all sold out in the larger sizes.

  15. Thank you for your posts. They’re wonderful! I love the necklace too. Wondering where you got it?
    Thanks
    Anne

  16. Actually, I have had this necklace so long that I do not remember where I originally bought it. If I see a similar one I will post it. Thank you Anne.

  17. Hi Brenda, I do not see a red shirt in this post or in the selections below this post. Could you be looking at another post. If you can give me more specifics, then I can try to help.
