Beauty Products for Softening the Inevitable

A couple of days ago, we discussed dressing to look younger and some words about age acceptance. This is the first year of my life, I have looked in the mirror and been aware of the aging process advancing rapidly.

Other than the fact age happens no matter what, I also believe I see the signs of stress on my face. While my busy life is fun, it is also quite stressful and the job as a magazine editor delivers more stress than I knew it would at first.   So, here is my current plan:

  1. To make quarterly facials a priority….yes, for my complexion’s appearance, but also for the relaxation part. I find it to be very relaxing. I have not done this is awhile, but that is going to change.
  2. Use good products and if something is not working as I like…find what does. There are so many great products…some I have mentioned below…and I make sure I use what works best within my budget.
  3. Take time at home for facial massage and regular exfoliation to keep things bright.
  4. Of course, eat healthy, exercise and get some sleep. I have been doing well in all of these areas BUT sleep. When I do not sleep well…I see it on my face…particularly in my eyes.
  5. Finally, try not to be too hard on myself….some of what I am seeing is normal aging and happens no matter what. I do not want to do injections, so I need to choose to have a plan like this one rather than a quick fix.

But, a reader asked yesterday if I would do a post on skincare…so I have decided to contact my favorite esthetician and do a thorough post with recommended products and ideas…Anyone want to add to this list above or share success you have had? Would love to hear it?

  1. I’ve never been one for facials. Yes, they’re relaxing but I’ve always had trouble justifying the expense. It’s silly I know and my skin would benefit. I need to find a good esthetician.

  2. I am the same age as you are, and like you I have noticed some changes in my face more recently. I guess not just my face, things seem to have shifted elsewhere too! I have done better in recent years with sleep. I get up very early so I go to bed very early. The only problem with that is fewer waking hours away from work, and that is a problem. I do exercise regularly. One thing that I have let slide that I’m going to pick back up again is spending time in solitude in nature. This has always been how I’ve centered myself, grounded myself, whatever you would call it. I don’t care that it is in single digits outside, this needs to resume! My job is also highly stressful and being outside, away from the noise of life, is how I find peace. Always have. I’m going to make this a priority. Thank you for the thoughtful post!

  3. I have always tried to take care of my face. One of the things I have found to reduce morning puffiness on my face (wish it was my whole body) is to use a satin pillow case. Sounds silly but for me it helped. I say go for the facial!
By the way, I really like the revamp you did of your page.

  4. I love facials and I have the best esthetician. My complexion always looks so good afterwards and it is so relaxing. I would go once a week if I could. My face always looks so much better.

  5. You are welcome, Karen. I hope t hear from you soon that you have been outside and taking care of yourself. Enjoy each moment…

  6. Thank you Ann…I had a fantastic web designer. I feel the same way about my bamboo pillowcase…and I have already made an appointment for the facial!!

  7. One thing I do that I don’t see mentioned yet is to use sunscreen daily. I use it under my makeup even if the makeup has sunscreen to make sure I am fully protected. Two that I like are Paula’s Choice Resist Youth Extending Daily Hydrating Fluid SPF 50 or Clinique’s Super City Block SPF 40. I make sure to use them on my neck also. My neck is an are that I have neglected before so I’m trying to remedy that. I also research ingredients that are beneficial to the skin to make sure my products. I still have combination skin and even though I am 53, I can still breakout on my chin every now and then but my forehead is very dry. I tend to have a few extra products in my routine for those specific areas. I agree that we shouldn’t be too hard on ourselves. We need to do the best we can and then enjoy life. A face that is smiling is always beautiful.

  8. My mother-in-law always used a satin pillowcase and her skin looked great for her age. I need to look for one again or the bamboo ones.

  9. I am a few years older than you, and yes, it is those very years where/when I’ve seen the biggest changes (and not for the best!) in my skin. I am very very careful with products I use and take great care. I do think the Skin Ceuticals CE Ferulic Serum, which has been recommended by almost every doc I’ve ever seen, is the best! Subtle, but it really really works, esp. when combined with RetinA.

  10. Hello Pamela ??
Thank you for sharing. You certainly are a pretty lady and look great in your outfits!
I make my own natural facials and face masks by using raw honey, organic vinegar, fresh lemon juice, turmeric and kefir. In addition,I use natural body wash and shampoos. My husband and myself enjoy cooking (he likes to bake bread) organic variety of foods from around the world. So,healthy has to be from the inside out. we both have strong faith in God so all this makes for a peaceful, tranquil, healthy and happy life…

    Blessings,
    Raquel

  11. Love facials and just booked one. I too found it extremely relaxing and when I was working, I went once a month. I notice that my skin has lost some radiance. I have done injectables, Botox and fillers, but the last time I had fillers it wasn’t a good experience, so I have stopped.

  12. I was a recipient of the L-BRI eye repair cream and facial masque recently and I love these products! I definitely notice the difference since their use.

  13. Hi Pamela,
I agree with you on facials…I love my esthetition, my complexion really benefits from quarterly facials. Also like Yonka products and she can tweak the products I use by season.
I also wish I could go more often!
    Love your blog

  14. I need to get back to once a month and move it up on my priority list. Thanks for sharing your experience, Elsie.

  15. Thanks so much Susan…I do wish I could go more often. I am looking forward to my next appointment…it can’t come fast enough.

  16. I’m 70 and can add to the skin care regime. It is so nice to read the uplifting comments and ideas! Besides faith, family, friends, exercise, diet, smiles, have an activity you are passionate about! Skin care: even if you don’t live in a sunny climate like I do, use a waterproof, high SPF# sunblock on the backs of your hands, wrists and forearms – daily. I have very few “age spots” and have done this for over 25 yrs.(I use Neutrogena or Coppertone Sport). Also, include your neck and exposed chest area (I use Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Dry Touch there). Note especially your left side(face, neck, arm) from car window exposure. For facial products, I use Origens. I don’t see a huge difference over drug store brands!

  17. All great ideas! I am also going try using a foam wedge and sleeping on my back. I hear that it reduces acid reflux, wrinkles and eye puffiness. The wrinkle fairy is visiting more often and my stressful lifestyle isn’t helping…

  18. I hear you, Janet. Stress is a killer. I have not heard that about a foam wedge and eye puffiness…please report back to us and let us know if it works!
