Day 1 of My New Healthy LifeStyle Routine Over 50

I have experienced one whole workout as part of my new healthy lifetyle routine over 50 with new training at my gym. .  It is different, less time, less number of exercises, but much more intense.  I walked off thinking…that wasn’t so bad, but then the fatigue set in.  I definitely need to work on my stamina…and that is why I am there.  I followed it up on Day One with using my FitBit to track steps and activity.  So, here we go….I am off on another “get healthier” adventure.

Since this is all about healthy eating, I decided I would avoid fast food easier if I cooked ahead over the weekend.  So I roasted some veggies just tossed lightly in olive oil, and a little garlic salt.  I also roasted walnuts to eat a few in between meals.

Then, I placed a pork roast in my crock pot with a few sweet potatoes cubed.  I seasoned that with salt, pepper and threw in some fresh rosemary sprigs,  Mrs. Dash Garlic & Herb, and a new Avocado Oil dressing….THIS WAS DELICIOUS.  It provided several servings for me and my husband.  I love my crock pot and will use it, often, now that I am back to cooking healthy for us.   I have not read or studied a book as so many of you have, but I plan to check into one or two of the books you recommended.  I am writing down everything I eat, so the nutritionist who oversees the program where I am working out can flag any issues if I do not lose weight.  Basically, I know to avoid sugar, bread, and most dairy.  After I work out in the morning, I will make a protein shake with The Juice Plus Protein Powder, water, and a little frozen mango (great for your complexion!).  Remember avocado and olive oil make up healthy fats…The Avocado Salad Dressing is not that easy to find (unless you have an HEB), but keep an eye for it…it is good!

That is my first day update….I will be working out with the trainers two more days this week and as summer winds down, hopefully, returning to regular treadmill visits in between.

Some of these items are in the slideshow below if you are interested.  No matter your good health plan…………….

KEEP SMILING!!

  1. Good morning Pam- I applaud you on your new fitness endeavour. We’re all on the journey and I love to get new ideas and input from others. I’ll be following along.
P.s. I am now a big label reader so check out ingredients in salad dressing, spaghetti sauce etc. so many contain those ingredients that don’t benefit us on the journey like added sugars, chemical preservatives etc. Just a helpful hint.

  2. Thanks Marianne, I read the label on this one and it seemed good…but I do have a lot to learn. Thanks so much for reminding us of red flags.

  3. How inspirational! I like the idea of cooking ahead for the week, and have done this at times and need to get back to it. I LOVE roasted vegetables, my favorite way to fix them, and I’ve found they are even good cold for a snack. I’ll be following along on this journey, and just yesterday I started writing down everything I eat, because there is something about writing it down that makes you feel more accountable and also helps me put on the brakes when I’m passing the snack aisle at the grocery store! Also with writing it down, you feel like you accomplished something when you end a day with a healthy log! The challenge comes when you grasp that this isn’t a quick fix and it’s going to take time to achieve the goal, then keep going to maintain it. It’s sure not as easy as it was when I was in my 40’s and 50’s! Weight came off much quicker in those days! It’s inspiring that you spend so many mornings in the gym. I would imagine that doing that gives you a sense of a huge accomplishment for the rest of the day!

  4. It does take persistence, Karen. You have to get back on the horse each fall. I have had to accept that working out and healthy eating is my life now…no going back and it’s worth the results. Thanks!

  5. That salad dressing looks great. I haven’t seen it in the stores. Have you jumped on the instant pot bank wagon? I have been called the “Crock-Pot Queen” for many years. I believe I have six of them in various sizes but am having fun with the Instant Pot. You can toss in even frozen meat and it comes out perfectly cooked every time. I love sweet potatoes but never thought of putting them in the crock-pot with a pork roast. I’ll try that.

  6. It’s such a great idea to plan meals ahead of time! I don’t have a crock pot but may need to get one. Bravo Pam!! You’re inspiring me to get with it. I’ve ignored exercise for too long.

  7. I love using my crockpot so I’m going to try the pork roast & sweet potatoes. It looks yummy!

  8. I searched the dressing and not a lot of places had it. Must be very new! Love my crockpot!

  9. When I take time to plan and cook on the weekend, I eat healthier and save money. I just need to do it more weekends.

  10. Keeping my eye out for that dressing here in New England! Always on the search for new flavors to add to the repertoire. Thanks for the recipe Pam.

  11. Great post, thank you.
The problem I find is cooking for two or one person only. Do you know of any book that has small crock pot recipes? Most seem to be for six or more people. Freezing is an option but my freezer is not large. I like my crock pot especially in the Texas summer when I don’t want to heat up the kitchen with the oven.
