Fashion Over 50: Early Fall in Capes and Ponchos

So excited right now….the new baby and colder air are all scheduled to arrive over the next couple of days…my favorite types of delivery.  This is a typical early fall outfit for me…the lightweight capes and ponchos work well in our type of climate.  I am wearing a JJill Poncho from a couple of seasons back, and new JJill Ponte Knit Pants and  JJill ponte knit top.

This is a JJill top I wore last fall.  It seems to be a brand that I wear more in the fall and winter than warmer months…not sure why, but it is a good brand for wardrobe building and the pieces I own are mostly for those seasons.

These pants are super comfy and look so nice for work or going out.  And I am really glad I kept this cape…it will always work.  Maybe I will wear it to the hospital to meet my new grandson…but he arrives before the cool air does, so I might not be ready for this just yet.  My grandmother name is GiGi….and his other grandmother is CeCe!  It’s an early alphabet lesson!

Does anyone else like to wear a cape or poncho occasionally in early fall?  I know it is not as figure flattering as a jacket, but I do like the look occasionally.  What do you think?  Please share….there is a slideshow below and I included the new pieces from JJill.

KEEP SMILING, EVERYONE!!

  1. Yes, yes, yes to the ponchos and capes. I have them, wear them and love them! I think if you keep the bottom piece (pants, skirt) slim (as you have done), this is a very flattering look. Your poncho is beautiful and definitely a keeper. I buy J Jill frequently and do wear this brand year-round. I can’t resist their summer dresses and tanks! The V-neck t-shirt in the slideshow is something I’ve been looking for and I will be purchasing one today. Saw it in the catalog so I’m glad you put it in there as I needed a reminder! Have fun welcoming the new addition to the family! Children (at any age) are such treasures!

  2. I started out as a GiGi to my oldest granddaughter, but the youngest calls me FiFi, so now everyone calls me that. And I mean everyone. But it does make me smile every single time. Oh what grandbabies do to us!

  3. Love capes, ponchos, large wraps. Fit nicely into any wardrobe. I have worn them since I first bought a grey tweed cape with a black velvet collar in London in 1963 and I have been hooked ever since. Last week, celebrating an anniversary I took a large wrap with me – I knew that the restaurant would be quite cool. Worn with a silk top and slim black pants, it was a comfortable and good look.

  4. I do like capes and ponchos but not ponchos I have to put on over my head. My hair doesn’t old up well to the “on and off” multiple times a day. I mentioned previously, I don’t like to be all bound up when I’m driving and I have some lovely capes that button down with arm openings and they are great while it’s in the 40’s and upper 30’s. I’ve received compliments on them from store clerks and shoppers. One lady even asked where I bought one because her mother is disabled and has difficulty getting in and out of coats. That particular cape just had a button around the neck and one or two more.

  5. I have a black sweater cape with a faux fur detachable collar that I love. It can be styled with so many things and is a great throw on to run an errand or to dress up with the fur for an evening out. I sometimes think a leopard poncho would be a good purchase. I have shawls but fuss too much with wrapping them. A poncho or cape is better for me because it looks good as is! I love the print on yours.

  6. I have not worn a cape or poncho before – just not my thing – but I did buy an open cape last week while staying at Shaker Village in Kentucky. I wore it to a grandson’s Rugby game in Michigan last weekend and it was perfect. I am now sold on the practicality of a cape that can be so easily added to an outfit. It will also be perfect for when I get home to Louisiana. Congratulations on the upcoming birth of that grand baby.

  7. I often wear a wrap or asymmetrical poncho. I wear them with a slim pant or pencil skirt. I get compliments all the time. I find they are actually more flattering and stylish on my frame than a jacket or blazer because I carry my weight around the middle. I am 5’8″ tall 160 lbs. Therefore the wrap/poncho hides my belly and butt and all you see are my nice long legs. I would prefer the poncho you are wearing in the picture to be just a few inches longer to hide more of the torso. Asymmetrical with the shortest part down to the wrist works best for me.

  8. Your outfit looks wonderful on you. Your beautiful smile is nice to see. Thank you for the amazing things you bring to our over 50 group. As I celebrate my birthday (71) today, I want to make a concerted effort to acknowledge the positive people in my life be it face to face or through internet. My goal is be kind and be thankful.

  9. I bought a reversible ruana last week. I am looking forward to wearing it soon. It has been on my list since I saw one in a magazine last year. As Nina noted, I don’t like ponchos that pull over my head either.
Congratulations on the new grandchild. Hoping mother & baby do well.

  10. You look great in that poncho — such a pretty outfit.
I am Nannie to my grandsons, which is the traditional grandmother name in my family. I fondly remember my own Nannie and love carrying on the tradition.
