Fashion Over 50: Plaid, Pearls, and Lace

Yes, this post is about plaid, pearls, and lace…but I have to comment first on how quickly things can change.  On Sunday, the temps were in the high 80s in San Antonio.  My air conditioner was blasting, ceiling fans turning, and I was walking around home in flip flops. Just 24 hours later, I was wearing boots and turning on the car seat warmers…we had dropped forty degrees.  I do not ever remember this happening this early since I moved to South Texas thirty five years ago.  But, I love it!  I love it when we get a touch of seasonal weather and yes, my cold weather clothes are out!

For some reason, I have always liked plaids, lace and pearls together.  Not sure why…but I do.  This is a knit topper I recently found at Nordstrom Rack, and I am certain will get a lot wear out of it.  It  also looks good with denim.   Sometimes I do not notice things about garments until we take the pictures…that little kink at the right hand bottom is not steamed out!  Are there combinations of textiles that you like together…and perhaps don’t know why?  Please share!  I have many ways I can wear this topper and I need it to be warmer than a pretty lace blouse so I will pair it with sweaters as long as this weather sticks around.  So glad to see it…sorry to those who want sun all the time!

I have some more fall fashion fun in the slideshow below…….and the Rockport Boots I am wearing are in the slideshow as well…super comfy!

KEEP SMILING, EVERYONE…HAPPY AUTUMN!

  1. I have been very much ready for fall this year too. Finally our highs are in the 50’s and I love it! This is a beautiful combination Pam, the plaid with the lace and pearls. Looks very classy! I like combining dressy fabrics (lace, velvet, shimmer, etc.) with denim. I like the contrast (like diamonds and denim, another favorite thing to do.) So this look really appeals to me. That’s a very nice topper and I can see how you’d get a lot of wear out of that. I personally love lace with anything. It’s so ultra feminine! Enjoy the cooler temperatures! And thank you for the reminder about the seat warmers! I completely forgot about mine and it’s been cold in the mornings!

  2. Our temps finally dropped which is a nice change. I’m not crazy about 85 degrees in October! I love the mix of plaid, lace and pearls. What a gorgeous combination. That topper is great on you, Pam! This post is very inspirational and I am going to play around in my closest to see if I can reproduce this look!!

  3. I love a black and white houndstooth blazer with a black velvet collar paired with black or blue jeans. I usually paired with a black lace top or bright red.

One of my all time favorite looks. I need to get a new houndstooth blazer

  4. I am so ready for fall. I love pearls with everything so this combo is right up my alley. We are slowly cooling off here so booties and making their way into my outfits.

  5. I would love to know where the pearl necklace came from. I wear pearls almost daily. Absolutely love them and always get compliments.

    Thanks so much!

  6. I like a glen plaid blazer with jeans or dress pants. Thanks for the inspiration of adding lace and pearls. I have found glen plaid to be versatile as so many pieces of clothing go well with it. I am a “winter” so enjoy mixing and matching navy, burgundy, etc.

  7. Hi Jessica, this is from Chico’s. They may still have them, though it was a couple of collections ago.

  8. This is your best look yet! I love lace, whether fine lace, crocheted lace, or printed lace fabric. And pearls, they make me feel polished, even when I’m in jeans. I own real and costume pearls, and gaze longingly at the gorgeous pearls at Tiffany and Mikimoto when window shopping. I hadn’t thought to combine them with plaid. Thank you for the great idea!

  9. Love the outfit! We went from near 90 degrees to having frost in a matter of a few days. As a friend put it, you have to love a place where you use the air conditioner & the furnace in the same day.
I think pearls immediately dress up any outfit. I also like wearing velvet or lace & denim.

  10. You look great in this outfit! The pearls and plaid are wow! Also think a man tailored white shirt would look nice!
My favorites are tweed and leather….as in tweed skirt with short creamy leather jacket, white shirt.

    Happy pairing!

  11. This is a great combination! Cool temperatures are one thing, cold are another! It snowed last night. ? Trust me, I never forget about the seat warmers!

  12. I’ve fallen a bit behind on reading my favourite blogs, so I just read this one and had to chuckle because my Fashion Friday post this week was also about pearls and plaid (no lace in mine though)! My look was very different from yours though.
