News for Women of a Certain Age

Welcome to News for Women of a Certain Age where I select stories which may be of interest just for you!  I just love this photo…I can envision sitting with a friend under an umbrella for a rich, bold cup of coffee while experiencing fresh fruit on the side.  Care to join me?  While we are visiting, let’s discuss some of these news stories……………….

We learned this week that the way you walk makes a HUGE difference in our physical and mental health.  Read about The Way We Walk HERE.

In an effort to keep our minds alert, more and more of us are taking collegiate classes either online or even at local colleges.  You may not be aware that there are several ways to do this for free or for deep discounts.  Check out this information HERE

This information is from last year, so make sure you call or check online for up to date information.

Many of us are familiar with Laura Ashley and she is back with a spring collection.  Find it HERE!

I use to love her clothes and bedroom linens

Any medical headlines I share are for you to take to your doctor and spend time discussing.  I only reveal what is out there and then you can decide if it is important for you along with your doctor.  Researchers this month have revealed that Pet Scans may help medical professionals track and diagnose Alzheimer’s Disease.  Check out the research article HERE.

There are several areas in this article where I have recently had to make modifications.  It was hard to admit and hard to go there, but my trainer has really helped me to understand that a deadlift at 175 may just be in my past.  As long as I am working with weights now, I have to be patient to work with less and not consider that a waste of time.  This is a good article to read and consider. But I am not avoiding all of these, just modifying…though I never did a box jump and happy to say I never will!! 7 Exercises You May Want to Avoid.

I am so happy to say HAPPY 97th BIRTHDAY TO DORIS DAY!  One of my favorite performers always….such a classy lady with a beautiful smile and I always loved her movies and music as a young girl.  She is just as beautiful today as she was in this photo.  Perhaps her love of animals is one of the reasons she has experienced long life…they have given her great joy!

Ok, ladies how about we finish our coffee and go shopping?  You in?  Thanks for stopping by and as always……………………………………..

KEEP SMILING!!

  1. Always interesting articles! The one about the way we walk was certainly an eye opener. I never gave it that much thought! I have been teaching myself American Sign Language and while being fluent would be nice, it has always been something I wanted to do just to learn basic communication and learn about the culture. To become fluent would involve more in-depth training, something I may pursue. I am hoping this will continue to challenge my brain since dementia is in my family, sad to say. I enjoyed the article on weights. I workout with weights consistently, yet don’t deadlift. I haven’t found it necessary and with past back problems have taken a different approach that is working. I think that we as women can help ourselves by working with weights in any type of safe workout. Where my mom lives they sit in chairs and use light weights, but they are doing it and benefiting from it! Doris Day is amazing, isnt she? That picture of the cafe looks so inviting! It’s supposed to be a warm day today so I will definitely be outside with my book and a beverage a little later on!

  2. Love that you are learning sign language, Karen!! I just have to add that deadlifts are for leg strength… an improper deadlift could hurt your back. Deadlifts are a part of the workout which has kept me off Osteoporosis medicine…but I am not deadlifting that much weight! You are right some weight work is beneficial…no matter what it is!!

  3. Hillsdale College has some wonderful on-line courses that are free. I do send them money now and then to show how much I appreciate what they do. At the moment I am enjoying a class about Jane Austen and how she began to write. For those with time to spare I strongly recommend these classes.

  4. Many large universities have Osher Lifelong Learning Institutes (OLLI) that offer courses to seniors taught by the university profs and other experts. I just finished a Great Decisions course on foreign policy and a course all about Coffee. Loved both.

  5. Great articles Pam! Doris Day lives here on the Monterey Peninsula and if you are ever here in Carmel please go by The Cypress Inn which she co-owns. It is a pet friendly hotel and filled with her memorabilia. Always a treat!

  6. Great photo of our umbrella! LOL. I take exception to some of these types of articles that tell women they are doing something wrong (walking) and if they are unhappy, it’s their own fault (for walking wrong.) Seriously, I was born with a bone defect and I couldn’t walk “correctly” if my life depended on it. I know you mean well, Pam, but this article I could have done without.
