How I find Inspiration for Styling Earth Tone Colors in Spring + A Caution Flag

Today, I am wearing another earth tone colored spring outfit…not the usual spring colors.  However, these are colors that really resonate with me.  I found some inspiration recently on a couple of my favorite blogs and on Pinterest.  Great places to go for inspiration.

Usually, I pull out these red rust colored Metro Leggings from Soft Surroundings (see slideshow below) in the fall.  I like being able to wear them longer than that and this is a good work outfit for me.  Some are also referring to lighter shades of this as Cinnamon and styling it for spring.  With the wet weather constant this week, I could wear a few jackets ad be very comfortable because the excessive heat has not set in yet…but, believe me, I know it is on the way.  I love looking for inspiration online, however, allow me to throw up a red caution flag if you also do this.  Remember, comparisons will only make you miserable and rob you of your joy.  There are plenty of over 50 bloggers who are very stylish, or skinny, or wealthy, or well- traveled…or all of the above and it is easy to slip into a “woe is me mindset.”  Please don’t give in to that.  You are beautiful and special just as you are…embrace it…and find the joy in where you are right now.  It is amazing how once we accept ourselves how we can more easily move forward to enhance ourselves.  When I began years ago to dress the body I had and embrace who I was at the size and age I was, how then I was more willing to look at ways to take better care of my body through improved eating and exercise.

If you are going to spend time online, try to find little nuggets of inspiration or information you can take away from each place and don’t get bogged down with comparisons to the blogger.  Look for ways to experience new discoveries you can apply to your own life.  If you find yourself getting depressed over comparisons, then get off the computer and stay away for awhile.  I know…I know…I am a blogger saying this.  But it is easy for me to get caught in the comparison game as well.  It can be a dangerous place, so navigate it with caution.

There are a lot of great sales out there right now for Mother’s Day!  I found some fun pieces and placed in the slideshow below…so enjoy!

Any special plans for Mother’s Day weekend?  Please share!   Thank you for being here and always, always

KEEP SMILING!!

  1. First of all, this is a great outf6and you look great in it! The color of the leggings is perfect with the darker toned jacket! You are so right about inspiration on Pinterest and the Internet. What you see more often than not are the youthful, thin, long-legged model types. It’s really easy to get discouraged. What I have been doing is to look in the photos for outfit components that I have. If I see pieces put together that are in my closet, I pin that for a reminder of how to wear something a new way. But generally, young and thin is the general rule. I am often drawn to the older models, though they are usually reed thin as well. Give us some reality!! Often I do what you mention and just close out what I’m looking at when I get that feeling of discouragement. You sure know when it hits you. It might be fashion, home decor , anything. Internet browsing can be beneficial, but also negative, you just have to know how to manage it.

  2. I too try to look at just the clothes for ideas on how to put outfits together with what I have. I’m not reed thin, but I am comfortable with how I look in my clothes (have been the same size since I was 18, with only minor variations.) Would I love to look young and thin? Sure, but what I am is 67 and size 14. None of this interferes with my health or happiness, so I guess that’s how it’ll stay.

  3. I love to see and be inspired just like the next woman, but have to watch out for comparisons. They don’t help anyone. I love this combo on you Pam. An unlimited budget would be great!

  4. I think we all struggle with it and just need to be more aware when it is robbing our joy! Thanks for sharing Jennifer!

  5. When i start to make comparisons, I try to mentally refer to the blog/picture/video as “airbrushed.” I remember all the times in my life when I thought someone had it all … only to find out they were desperately unhappy or anxious about something. Everyone has struggles, but we don’t (and I don’t want to) see that all hanging out on a blog. They are not really real life, and it’s wise to remember that. I read them for inspiration and to unwind. One of the virtues of being “our age” is that we can recognize that a $2000 handbag is -not- an investment. Maybe these people -are-wealthy … but maybe they are foolish. Who knows? And more importantly, it’s their business and honestly has nothing to do with me. But I do prefer the blogs, like yours, that style things I can afford, and that keep it real, genuine, and just plain nice.

  6. What an inspirational post Pam! Not only do you inspire with with your fashion sense, but also with your good common sense. Lovely colors you’re wearing, and I appreciate your words of wisdom regarding the danger of losing personal joy by falling victim to comparisons.

  7. Great look, Pam! I really love the button detail on the pants. Good reminder about comparison; we all have unique gifts to bring to the table!

  8. This is probably my favorite outfit to date! I love the structure of the jacket that gives some definition to the waist and the V-neckline is so flattering! You look polished and confident!

  9. That outfit looks great on you. You are so right about making comparisons. Price is a biggie for many of us. Quite truthfully, a white shirt that costs $100 & one that costs $30 can look very much the same. I just have to remind myself to look at the idea & not the cost or the size.
I hope you enjoy a blessed Mother’s Day.

  10. Very good blog. Maybe the women who have huge budgets also have social obligations the majority of us do not have, thank goodness. As for hair, it is so individual and some older women look fabulous with long hair. I am not one of them because I have never liked having to to style my hair so keep is very short. Pam, you look vibrant in earth tones so why not wear them year round?

  11. Pam, it looks like a current red, white, and blue! What says spring more than that, particularly if the current weather is cooler than normal. Let’s go for what looks good on us and not care about comparisons!

  12. I am a little late reading this post but I really appreciate it. If Autumn colors are more flattering to you then wear them all year round. They blend well with Summer’s golden yellows, greens and turquoise aquas. And with all ivories, creams, and camel/ tans. With a little effort they really work. Try your pants with an aqua top or a golden yellow one.

  13. Thank you! This is a great post with wise caution and one I needed to read today! 🙂
