2020 Style Goals 6 Week Update and Reader Inspired Style

Pamela Lutrell discusses her progress for 2020

Six weeks ago, we began 2020 with a discussion of Style Goals for the Year.  Personally, I desired to

  1. Wear clothing with better fit (retired many of my oversized pieces)
  2. Wear lighter colors and styles; plus add bright colors more often
  3. Wear shorter jackets

With 6 weeks into the year, I am pleased with the changes I am making.  Though I confess, the weather has set me back a little with my walking and gym attendance, and I can feel it in my clothes (NOT GOOD!  I will get a handle on this, but will be glad when the weather is consistently nicer).

HOW I FEEL ABOUT THE CHANGE

I do like what I am seeing, but saying good-bye to the oversized toppers has been difficult.  There have been several beautiful pieces on sale that in the past I would have purchased, but now that I am mindful of how they make me look larger, I have declined.  You may know by now that I do not change easily. I held on to my long hair until the past year and have been wearing oversized toppers for at least three years (when stress resulted in too many added pounds).  But, it is easy for me to see how both shorter hair and fitted garments look better on me!

Wrap tops and dresses are traditionally more flattering for us curvy gals.  I like this top for the design, the print, and the lighter color.  It looks good with a jacket or without.  This outfit is true to my style messages.  I want the world to see that I am intelligent, strong, approachable, current and creative.

A GOAL TO BE INTERESTING

Also, in the last year I think I was becoming a little boring during the week with my looks.  So, I vowed to myself for 2020 to be more interesting…especially with accessories.  I have so many great ones …they need to be used….right?  Like my Rockport Snake Print Ballet Flats…so in style this year and I love to mix prints like this.  I also own purses and necklaces that were neglected for awhile…but no longer.  For the past six weeks,  I have begun to mix things up more and be more interesting…it just makes my day more fun!!  Complacency is over!  Where I work, if I get super styled up, then I stand out.  I have decided to stop being in the background for 2020 and stand out!

So, please share…those of you who set style goals for 2020, how is it going?  If you wanted to set the goals, and haven’t, then what would it take?  Let’s talk…

NEW READER STYLE ADJECTIVES

Let’s call this week, Pam-week!  Only because this blogger, Pam, is going to feature the style adjectives of two readers, both named Pam!  Our first Pam would like to communicate with her style that she is sophisticated, comfortable, polished, dramatic, and classic.  By adding in “dramatic” she leaves the door open for a little more creativity than the typical minimalistic classic style.  I love this, Pam, and it was fun putting a slideshow together just for you and women like you.  I hope this will inspire those of you who desire to tell the world this is YOU when you leave the house each day…..

KEEP SMILING!

  1. This is really a beautiful outfit Pam! I love how the neutral colors work together, and that is such a great blouse! This is so flattering!! I didn’t make a lot of changes this year, but did take a look at my Foundational Five to make sure I am on track with my messages. I will review again in a few months when I feel more inspired by the weather! Some of those adjectives are always in the mix, some change. What you are showing today really appeals to me with the neutral colors and classic style. I know what you mean about weather, although ours is much more severe. Some mornings it’s brutal just walking from the car into the gym with the wind howling and snow blowing. I guess I could consider it part of my workout! I’m really ready for spring when things will warm up even a little bit and maybe we’ll see the sun more often. That’s a problem here where I live, the very few days when we actually see the sun. It can be pretty dismal. People seem to come to life on our rare sunny days! We can get through it Pam, the nice weather is coming!

  2. Love your style plans Pam. I find the more tailored looks not only more flattering but more youthful! You look great 🙂

  3. You look fantastic is this outfit Pam! What a difference a shorter jacket makes huh? I am only 5 ft 5 inches tall, so a long jacket makes me look shorter! I know we all seem to want to hide our posterior, but shorter jackets work! The top is also beautiful. And I do love your new highlighted hair! Great look on you! You are inspiring to look into highlights for my hair. Remember in the old days it was called frosting? well, maybe I am a lot older than you but I do remember! lol

  4. Fantastic, fun outfit on you today Pam! One of my goals for 2020 has been to simplify my closet and, like you, utilize more of my beautiful accessories. I really aspire to have nothing in my closets and drawers that I’m not wearing and loving.
I have two new events coming up, both of which are out of town concerts. One will be in an old church in downtown Portland, and the other in a jazz club in downtown Seattle. Both will involve also planning for long weekends in each city, so I need to think of dinner outfits, and some comfortable but stylish sightseeing clothes (esp for Seattle where we plan to visit a museum, take a ferry, hit the Pike’s Place market). I know I will take black slacks and dark wash jeans as basic elements, but need ideas for tops etc to change up my look over several days.

  5. Honestly, I don’t remember when it was called frosting, Linda, but I love the idea of being frosted! Thanks for being here!

  6. What are your favorite colors to wear, Connie? Would love to help you look. These all sound like such fun!

  7. I think this outfit is a winner for you – cut, color, perfect! You found your style blueprint. Keep it up!

  8. Navy blue is my favorite, but rarely as a solid on top. It’s just too dark for my Scandinavian skin coloring. I love white, pale yellow and coral up top, or aqua tones. Thanks Pam!! ?

  9. Love the outfit, Pam! My curvy body looks best in shorter jackets. The lines of the jacket also make a big difference in how I look and feel. Last week, I bought a traditionally cut white denim jean jacket. I gave it a quick try-one in the store to make sure I could button the jacket but I didn’t really notice that the sleeves were way too long for me. One look in my bathroom mirror and I knew the jacket would end up sitting in my closet! I checked online and found my favorite blue denim jacket also comes in white and since it comes in a petite, the sleeves will be the right length. The jacket still has the vertical seaming of a traditional jean jacket but it has a more feminine cut that suits my body. Added bonus: it was on sale, there was an additional discount offer and I just got a gift card for my birthday. It can be a challenge to remember that a nice looking garment at a great price is not a good deal if it isn’t a perfect fit!

  10. I’m so glad to see you steering away from the oversized toppers, Pam! Your new look is so much more flattering. By adding Creative to my adjectives this year, I’ve been attempting to add a bit more drama to my look. I tend to be a bit of a minimalist, but like you, I have lots of interesting accessories and they’ve been coming out to play more often lately.

  11. I remember frosted hair Linda!! They sold “frosting” kits in the drugstore, maybe still do!

  12. You are speaking my language. I am exactly where you are– buying more fitted clothing, wearing my accessories. My workplace is similiar but I find that I am more productive on days where I put in the extra effort– like my Mama said, “It’s better to overdressed than underdressed!”

  13. I love your spin on classic style this time. The blouse has great interest with the asymmetrical opening and dot print. Under a jacket, it adds a little pizzaz. For even more pizzaz, you could add a colorful handbag. The obvious would be a red bag but I would probably use emerald, blue, or yellow. One thing that I see in most women over 50 is that their pants do not fit in the leg as well as they should. Like a lot of women my age I have a tummy. That causes me to buy a size larger than I would otherwise. The leg of the smaller size always looks better on me. So, I buy the larger size and taper the leg. It takes a little work (or a little cash), but is well worth it for the look. Most of us don’t have very many pairs of pants these days. A good pair of black pants and a well fitting jean will go far! Keep up the great work. You are helping so many women!

  14. This outfit is really flattering on you! I wouldn’t have put the top and jacket together but it so works!
