Spring Renewal for Women Over 50 – Tip #2 Everything Old is New Again

Pamela Lutrell for Goodwill SA spring affordable fashion

Welcome back to our discussion of ways women over 50 can renew and refresh going into spring.  This transition period is a great time to prepare for when warmer weather arrives permanently.  Yesterday, my tip was to slowly add color to your neutrals.  I have done that again today, but with Tip #2 in mind….remember that fashion is cyclical, and every season, everything old is new again!  Fashion is a business with trends and cycles that come around and go around.  This is why we often have trends in our closet and only need to give them a modern spin in order to look youthful and current.

WHY THRIFT SHOPPING WORKS

Pamela Lutrell shops Goodwill SA for spring styles

The cycles of trends going and coming actually is the reason thrift shopping can work so well.  When I went by Goodwill San Antonio recently I found this top that I am wearing as a topper….plaid is still on trend, sheer garments are big in fashion this year and this is a sheer garment though it is difficult to see that (without the shirt underneath you could see right through it)…also, this is a great color for going from winter to spring.  I have styled it with black denim, and my Via Spiga athletic style leather shoes, and an old Chico’s necklace to give it a more modern touch.  The silver cuff I am wearing also came from a garage sale.   Thrift shopping at Goodwill San Antonio, going by my favorite consignment shop. (The Garment Exchange) occasionally, and hitting a yard sale or too is such a fun, affordable way to take your wardrobe into a new season.  One of my favorite summer necklaces was fifty cents at a yard sale!

I put these these items styled with my quality pieces (like the Soft Surroundings denim, and the shoes) and it makes for a fun way to go into a new season.  Treasure hunting with a friend is always a lot of fun.  I stop by Goodwill San Antonio often because I just never know what I will discover.  This week I will wear two more looks for you featuring Goodwill SA finds.  When I shop there, I am helping my budget, supporting sustainability, and supporting all of the positive work Goodwill San Antonio does for our community.

A NECESSARY WAY TO PREPARE FOR SHOPPING

Pamela Lutrell shops hand sanitizer at HEB

San Antonio has been one of the cities in the news with coronovirus and since I am in the CDC’s target group of over 60 adults with respiratory issues (I have asthma) I am trying to be smart….although I am not really staying home more.  I picked what was left in the racks at HEB of hand sanitizer…I would have preferred the one with actual aloe in it and not merely aloe scent. Anyway, I am making mini-bottles to carry in my handbag, and use more often.  Of course if it worsens around me, I will stay home more.  But right now, I need to go to work, church, and blog reporting in order to maintain the status quo.

SPRING REFRESHMENT FOR ANOTHER READER

Spring is the perfect time for me to encourage and inspire readers with their style messages.  Connie wants to say to the world that she is carefree, casual, approachable, colorful, and classic.  Great messages for colorful springtime!  Today’s slideshow is meant for Connie and women like her!  I hope you enjoy.  Remember everything you wear tells the world outside your door something about you without you speaking a word.  What do you want to say?

REFRESHMENT FOR THE GARDEN

Over 50 Feeling 40 with hibiscus flowers

Every spring, I plant hibiscus of all colors in pots in my backyard.  This year I am trying to get my husband to make more of a commitment with the flowers and plant some bushes in the ground.  I love them and they do so well in San Antonio and South Texas.  if you visit our Fiesta Texas Theme Park, you will see them all over thriving in gorgeous color!  We will see if I convince him!  I found these at HEB, my favorite grocery.

  1. Miss Pamela, you are wise to take precautions regarding the virus. I read that so many people are pooh-poohing it and I would rather be smart than sick. At seventy-two with a spot on one lung, I opt for prudence. My sweet mother had asthma and you definitely need to stay away from sick people. I will add you to my prayer list (just because I think you are a fantastic woman!). I love that you mix high end and gently pre-loved pieces. The trend now is high-waist flare crop jeans. There is a pair in my closet that came from, you guessed it, a thrift store.

  2. Yes Pam! Fir thus over 70 with celiac disease (auto immune), and Afib arrhythmia I am washing my hands washing my hands and doing it often with soap and water. . A Medical person told me you need soap to break down the outer part Of virus cells.
Please everyone, be safe and be sensible about non essential travel in planes and cruise ships. Stay healthy and carry that sanitizer as you’re doing as back up.

  3. Yes, Paulette, I start with hand washing. In Texas, someone said to wash your hands as if you just chopped a jalapeno and need to put in contacts or rub your eyes! That illustration works for me!

  4. Thank you for the super-fabulous slide show, Pam! I had to laugh as the first image, the black and floral print crossbody bag, could be a clone for one hanging in my closet which I’ve had for a couple years now. 😄 Great job, too, with all your picks for me: the olive cargo pants I’ve been looking for to replace a plainer pair that wore out, the THIS SCREAMS ME pair of red bow flats!!!, the pretty floral pinkish blouse, and the bo-ho white one which is right up my alley. Later in the day I will sit at my full screen computer to take a much closer look than I can on my phone screen.
As to the coronavirus, our first case was confirmed over the weekend locally. We’ve decided to cancel our end of the month trip to Seattle. It’s just too risky for my husband, who is a very spry 71, but has lung and other health issues. Maybe we’ll just have to create a little dark and moody jazz club right here at home and put the music on the c.d. player. 🤷‍♀️
Happy Monday, and thanks ever so much for the spot-on suggestions!

  5. The topper you are featuring is very cool! Sheer is so popular for spring and summer, and while I won’t be wearing mine with a bralette, or worse yet, nothing, I like sheer fabrics and this is where tank tops and camisoles are our friends! I love the color of your shirt/topper! What a gorgeous hibiscus you pictured! I grow them too, ours don’t bloom until July, but I do look forward to them coming back every year!

  6. I am so surprised it takes until July for you to see blooms. I guess that tells me how different our climates really are. Thanks Karen

  7. Super tips, Pamela however due to our climate and since our Spring season is so short; I focus more on clothing that will do double duty and serve my need for summer.

With respect to the C-19 virus fortunately we have had no cases in the (metropolitan) city I live in (touch wood). With that said something I have read re washing your hands; to be effective one should do it right up to the wrist bone and for the duration of singing the lyrics of Happy Birthday, twice. -Brenda-

P.S.: The Hibiscus plant is so pretty! Quick question: are there Magnolia trees where you are? (They are one of my favourites and how I wish they were native to Canada.)

  8. I heard that somewhere online is a :20 playlist of top favorite songs to wash your hands to! Yes, Magnolia trees are everywhere and I love them. I wish my yard had fruit trees and Magnolia trees! Thanks Brenda

  9. I’m glad that you occasionally include thrift and goodwill pieces in your blog! The top you have on today is perfect.
We have 8 cases of the C Virus in Colorado. My husband & I decided to postpone a trip this week, and will stay closer to home. We are washing hands frequently, and trying to avoid crowds. The stores here are out of hand sanitizer and paper products. We will continue our normal activities, but will be more careful and aware. Stay well!

  10. You need to wash your hands for 20 seconds. That is equiliven to singing HAPPY BIRTHDAY. Stay well
