Fashion over 50: Appreciate the sales associates to step up denim styles

Chicos toppers for denim on over 50 feeling 40

Happy Monday, everyone!  So happy to be back feeling put together and ready to discuss how to trust and listen to sales associates advice; as well as, finding ways to step up my denim looks.  You probably already know that my wardrobe consists of toppers, jackets, kimonos, ruanas….stylish ways to wear a column of color underneath….including this dark jean with a navy blue tee.

How to style denim on over 50 feeling 40

Before the pandemic, I stopped by one of the local Chico’s boutiques and this jacket was on a mannequin actually styled with a pair of light colored, very casual jeans and a dark tank.

I immediately wanted to try it on, so I grabbed my usual size 3 and headed to a dressing room.  When I saw it in the mirror, it did not look good at all.  An observant sales associate looked at me and, with a wink, said…Trust me.  Try on the size 2 in petite and I think you will like it better. That is what you seeing below.

She was right.  I did like it, but I was not ready to pay full price for it.  So, I filed it in my “keep an eye on this file.”  I believe since that day, I have seen sales on this jacket…often…too many times to try to count.  However, there was one special day when it went pretty low and I pounced (about $40)..now I was ready to commit.  It is memorable.  While I really like it, I needed to have a much lower cost per wear on the garment.  It also pays to sign up for Chico’s pop-up sales (there was one yesterday) and to be a Passport customer…which is free and comes with benefits.  So, it was worth waiting for.  I am also going to style it like I saw on the original mannequin and see what I think.  I do not wear the lighter washes often, but I do own one with a good fit…so I will give it a go.  This is a creative way to take jeans up a notch.

THE MORAL OF THE STORY

Chico's necklace with Chico's jacket on over 50 feeling 40

I put it together with a Chico’s summer shell necklace I have owned for many years and then added in my new James Avery ring and bracelet…which all pulled together really well.  If I go back to an office or return to church soon, this is the type of look I feel confident heading out in.  Also, the jeans are from Soft Surroundings and in today’s slideshow.

The moral of this story is to listen to the sales associates and take their advice.  I think we often do not trust them or think they will talk us into something we do not want.  They are the experts and have the experience with the clothing…it pays to listen.  You can always walk away like I did, but I eventually made the purchase and the size advice was critical for the sale.  For those mostly shopping online, when you go to Chico’s site, look in the lower right hand side of the webpage and you will see a pop-up box that says START A CONVERSATION.  An online sales associate is there to help, so ask their advice particularly about sizing.  You will be able to discern if it is a bot or a person by how they answer you.  Many shopping sites are now doing this.

So, tell us, do you typically trust the sales associates or not?  Please share and enjoy today’s Fabulous Find slideshow. I am so glad you are here.

KEEP SMILING!

JUST A NOTE:

Pamela Lutrell for Goli GummiesThere are several ways that I generate income through this blog in order to cover business expenses and give myself much needed income.  Purchases through the slideshow links is one way, ads on the page is one way and a new way is through ordering or re-ordering the GOLI Apple Cider Vinegar gummies through me with my GOLI LINK HERE.  Again, if you are not familiar with the benefits of apple cider vinegar, you should speak with your personal physician.  My husband and I are sold on the benefits and I am proud to represent this product.  I am going to leave this at the bottom of my posts so that when you, friends or family would like to order you can use my link.  Thanks for the support.  This is a great product.

  1. Your smile says it all! Such a nice jacket, and it’s good that the associate helped out, because you may have missed out otherwise. They truly are helpful in some stores. I’ve found Chico’s and JJill to be especially helpful. It helps to be at the store when they’re not super busy and have more time. I’m so glad you enjoyed your salon day! Your hair does look pretty, and your nails also!

  2. Liked your suggestion about the petite 2 at Chicos. The 3’s always seem a bit large on me,Will try it out when next I venture forth to shop. OR even on line shopping. I too watch the sale pages on all my favorite stores. It certainly helps with the budget. Also check out www. chicosofftherack site. they also have some good deals. Stay safe and smile. Always enjoy you comments. Lots of good ideas which I have followed!

  3. I still love in store shopping over online, where I don’t have great luck. Something is typically off–size or color or feel of the fabric is not what I like. The sales associates give great feedback to me, and often recommend some beautiful accessories too. I’m a brick and mortar store holdout and today our stores fully open…..here I come in mask and hand sanitizer in tow. Hopefully I find a few things!

  4. Have fun, Paulette! Let us know what you find…it is so true that sales associates can add great tips on accessories.

  5. Oh, yes!! I trust Chico’s sales associates. Years ago an associate guided me to a pair of 1.5 pants rather than a 2. Have been wearing that size ever since….at first I thought the were a tad tight and she said “trust me, they will stretch”… She was correct, they did and I have been happy with the fit of Chico’s pants ever since…for at least the last 15 years!!
Know how you feel about your haircut…had mine cut last week, too…
Enjoy your articles very much. Keep up the good work.

  6. Thank you Suzanne…and thanks for sharing your story. Now, I am re-thinking the size of my pants at Chicos!!

  7. Don’t you love it when you find something that just says “Me!” — & then you can find it on sale? As for sales’ associates: I trust them to know their stock: how things fit, what colours & separates go together well, what accessories they have that can enhance a look & so on. But in the end the only person I listen to about whether or not something looks good on me is me. For me to buy it, a garment needs to look good, feel comfortable, work with my wardrobe & have that special “something” that defines my personal style & doesn’t make me look like every other woman on the street. My rule has always been simple: if it’s not a WOW YES the minute I put a garment or outfit on, it’s a flat no. I have to actually have an emotional response to something or I don’t want it in my closet, regardless of whether it’s an expensive outfit for a fancy dinner or a simple tee shirt or pair of jeans. And — as with you with this jacket, Pam — that may involve a sales associate’s input (especially regarding fit, colour or accessorizing).
