5 tips for how I survive summer heat

Tips for Summer on Over 50 Feeling 40

Happy Monday, ladies!  Today, I wanted to share with you five ways that I survive the intense heat of summer.  For those who think I may not understand summer heat, well, you must not know that I am born and bred in Texas…and heat is our middle name.

The time I get most frustrated with it is around September when I am ready to change seasons and say goodbye to sweat.  But, rarely do we have cool Septembers.  I have friends who love the heat and spend time out in it…I am not really one of those.

#1 MORNING IS OUTSIDE TIME

Chico's top on Over 50 Feeling 40

Morning is go time for me.  I very well may be at the grocery when some of you are just beginning your day.  I get up early and get out to care for the plants, and run what errands I can before the temps begin to creep toward 100 degrees.

Today, I am wearing a Chico’s blouse, Christopher and Banks walking shorts and BZEES Sandals. (The sandals are in the slideshow)  I am not really a pastels/summer colors girl.  I own a little, but not much.  I prefer the earth tones in neutrals for the summer…it part of Pamela-style!

#2 WEAR A HAT

Dillard's Hats on Over 50 Feeling 40

A great hat like this Vince Camuto hat from Dillard’s really does make a difference in keeping the sun from my face and helping me to stay overall cooler.  I am getting a lot of mileage out of this hat this summer.

#3 HYDRATE

I cannot say it enough…hydrate, hydrate, hydrate….good, fresh, water…throughout the day.  Remember to drink more if you are outside for any reason.  Learn to love water if you have not done that already…the benefits are many.

#KEEP THE AIR MOVING

Cell Phone Fan on over 50 Feeling 40

I have become someone who must have air moving at all times.  I am blessed to own a home with a ceiling fan in every room and I was thrilled when Soft Surroundings sent this cell phone fan!  It has been a blessing when I am at a salon or in a situation where the air is stagnant.

I am also a huge proponent of beautiful, traditional fans for summer events.  I find them to be quite elegant.  Today, I am wearing a leopard cuff also sent from Soft Surroundings.  Like the pop it adds to this outfit.

#5 EXCELLENT SUNSCREEN PRODUCTS

Sephora Supergoop on Over 50 Feeling 40

There is a company is San Antonio, where I live, that is doing so well due to a successful line of sunscreen products they created called SUPERGOOP!  I have wanted to try them for a long time, and was so pleased recently when my youngest son walked into the house with a Sephora bag, just for his mama!  His 27 year old skin looks amazing and he attributes it solely to good care with Supergoop.  After a few days of using these products, I am sold…they are excellent and put a beautiful shine on your complexion.

You can tell by my super white skin that I need sunscreen. After a skin cancer scare a few years ago, I really take it seriously and have ceased trying to have skin color I was not born with.   I have these products in the slideshow below.

Today’s look is a typical errand running style for me these days. I prefer the look of a walking short on me over a shorter one.   However, I kept my kimonos and still love them in the summertime over sleeveless tanks.  I know they are oversized but I often find them to be an elegant look as well.  Thank you for being here…please share your top ways of staying cooler in the summer!  It is possible to be in high heat and

Pamela Lutrell for Goli GummiesThere are several ways that I generate income through this blog in order to cover business expenses and give myself much needed income.  Purchases through the slideshow links is one way, ads on the page is one way and a new way is through ordering or re-ordering the GOLI Apple Cider Vinegar gummies through me with my GOLI LINK HERE.  Again, if you are not familiar with the benefits of apple cider vinegar, you should speak with your personal physician.  My husband and I are sold on the benefits and I am proud to represent this product.  I am going to leave this at the bottom of my posts so that when you, friends or family would like to order you can use my link.  Thanks for the support.  This is a great product; as well as, the ones below!

  1. It works for me too! That is why I run errands in the morning! Stay cool, Dell Ann!

  2. Seeing the fans in your slideshow reminds me of my mother. She had such a beautiful variety of silk fans which she always took with her to use during church. I often wondered why other mothers did not have fans like hers although many used those cardboard with a handle attached “funeral home” fans that often were left on the pews. Like Dell Ann said above, we folks who CAN stay inside in the AC are fortunate , but many have to be out in this 100+ degree temperatures working. I’m in South Georgia where we also have high humidity so it’s often unbearable by midday.

  3. The humidity is such a key factor, Celia. Every now and then we will have the low temps with low humidity and we can even go out to enjoy. One year, I traveled for an event at Purdue University during this time and stayed at a place which had no AC. Yes, it was cooler up there, but I was suffering without air moving at all! We are blessed to have it. Thanks!

  4. I live in Lake Havasu, AZ, where the proverbial “dry heat” is the norm. Let me tell you when it gets over 110 dry heat is a furnace you breathe in. And don’t step on the pavement with bare feet or you’re fried. It’s been 113-123 here now for the last 10 days and AC is my life saver — along with big ceiling fans in every room. If you’re not in the pool or on the Lake in a boat, it isn’t fun. BUT it’s better than shoveling 108″ of snow in a Boston suburb the last year we were in New England.

  5. LOL, Ann, I guess we have to pick the poison sometimes…right? I know about the pavement problem…the local media have been reminding pet owners all this month to take care with the pavement. We have had years that the streets buckle. This year these warnings are earlier than usual, so no one is looking forward to what August holds. Stay cool and thanks for sharing.

  6. Such a good question for what is supposed to be a 95 degree day here in southern Oregon. We tend to have dry heat, though sometimes in late August we’ll get thunderstorms roll through and it’s always humid leading up to those. I have plumbers, carpet installers and bathroom remodelers in and out of my house today, so trying to keep it cool or fly free will be a challenge! Just plan to keep cold lemonade and sport drinks available to all the hard workers here, and run the A/C as necessary.

  7. Just wanted to say that we had a family reunion there at Lake Havasu back in 2005, and you’re not kidding about that heat! Luckily we rented a house with a pool and had a wave runner for fun on the lake, but good grief it was hot. It is kind of fun to be able to go swimming at midnight though, and not catch a chill. 😉

  8. We need thunderstorms badly right now. Sounds Like you have a good plan there, Connie. I remember that you are in a cooler climate!

  9. Oof, Aye needing the air moving! We also have ceiling fans in all rooms. Makes it feel cooler even with AC. Plus I have a sound machine & either have Ocean waves or babbling brook playing. Something about sound of moving water makes me feel cooler. SWLA/SETX over here.

You’ve covered keeping cool perfectly! Lightweight fabrics. “Airy & breezy fit”. From mid-April to mid-October, I live in loose wicking yoga-style tops & skorts with gauzy/crochet style swimsuit cover-ups. Looks purposefully curated without accessories, too.

Now you’ve done it Miss Pamela *grin* I may start looking for a few of those beautiful old fans. Well remembered from childhood, Latin Mass, & Widows perpetually clothed in black. Gosh! they were so intricately painted.

  10. So many of the fans are really gorgeous and oh so elegant…don’t you think, Beverly! Thanks for stopping by.

  11. Having spent much time n Scottsdale in the summer, living in Houston heat feels like Scottsdale with humidity!

  12. I know what you mean about fans. Even on cruises where we have a balcony we can open, I still bring a small plastic fan to keep the air circulating. I can’t sleep without one. I found it on Amazon and it is small and quiet enough for a desk at work too.

  13. Super tips, Pamela. As you know I live in Canada but feel I was definitely born in the wrong hemisphere as LOVE warm weather, but shall admit am not so much a fan of high humidity. With that said; I have used Frogg toggs ‘Cooling Chilly Pad Towels’ that I have found to be beneficial when vacationing in the tropics. In fact one year, children and adults alike got one in their Xmas Stocking from Santa. -Brenda-

  14. Oh my! Yes we’ve had a couple of WEEKS only of 90s and High humidity and Im so sick if it, literally. Already! It got me thinking…. I’ll takethe snowstorms any day. You’re stuck in a day while they plow then the roads are clear and off we go, business as usual, and in Rhode Island or Cape Cod where my two houses are, there really aren’t any winters of 108 inches of snow. Maybe 30 + inches over four months. If that. We’re near the coast. It melts! I’m not a summer girl….prefer cool temps. I guess its what you’re used to. But thanks for the advice. Staying cool.

  15. Very good tips for summer heat! Even though I’m in Ohio, we have been having a weeks and weeks and weeks-long heatwave, even got over a hundred several times. Mornings are often the most pleasant temperatures of the day, and like you I get out in the mornings. I have a good friend in Florida who says her walks are finished by 5 a.m. and she’s finished her yard work by 6 a.m. and heads inside. While I wouldn’t want to spend my days inside all the time, I sure do seek out shady spots in the yard. Your summer infused water picture always looks so lovely and reminds me to pamper myself more with the pretty glassware and dishes! Today is my appointment for my body scan at the dermatologist. I have some tan lines that I’ll probably hear about from the beach trip, but hoping that nothing turns up on this visit!

  16. I hope it goes well, Karen. It is so good that you do this regularly! My husband just had to go through a little in office pre-cancerous surgery. So glad he got it checked.
