Elegant Fashion Over 50 and the fashion news for Fall 2020-2021

As we get farther into the new fall collections hitting the racks along with our desire to be more elegant, I wanted to make sure you knew about the trend colors going forward.  Especially for those of you who like to shop the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale.  That sale is the first time you can purchase new fall fashion actually on sale…and it is very popular.   The Pantone Color Institute reveals the season’s color selections which are utilized by fashion and home décor designers throughout the industry.  You can see all of those colors at the Pantone Fall Trend Color Report.

PAY ATTENTION TO THESE WORDS

For those of you on the road to elegance with me, pay attention to this paragraph on the Pantone site: “Offering a rich narrative, the color palette for Autumn/Winter 2020/2021 highlights our desire for versatile, timeless color. Reflecting a ‘less is more’ mindset that is becoming increasingly important to consumers prioritizing value and functionality, our color palette is stripped of excess,” said Leatrice Eiseman, Executive Director of the Pantone Color Institute. “Imbued with strength and personality, colors for Autumn/Winter 2020/2021 encourage our ongoing desire for unique self-expression through creative and unusual visual statements that stand out.”  We are learning to go beyond black & white with elegance and simplicity.

From every book I have read so far, elegant women practice less is more.  They look and feel great in their clothing and do not need to do much experimentation, because they know what works.  I have a newfound freedom with this philosophy now that I have changed to working predominately at home.  I am learning more and more what works for me, and now (more than ever) I can have the courage to stick to it and just be me.  I will be discussing this more tomorrow…while I humbly confess to mistakes!

Out of the colors, I personally like the magenta purple, fired brick and classic blue. All are currently in my wardrobe.   I would need to see the sandstone, samba and ultramarine green close up before I knew for sure what I thought.  How about you…what are your favorites here?

I am going to discuss this more when I do more wardrobe posts on what basics should be there.  I have always struggled with capsule collection posts…but this is a new me…so after I do some research, you will be the first to know where I land.  I am willing to learn and make new changes!

FOR NOW, LET’S LOVE THESE NEUTRALS

Pantone Colors for 2020/2021 on over 50 feeling 40

These are the trend neutrals selected by Pantone this year, and I am in love.  Isn’t that Almond Oil gorgeous?  I have never really been a fan of white…but a creamy off- white has me every time. I will wear all of these.  I am not giving up the black I love so much, but all four of these have me at hello.

With neutrals in mind, I am showing you the Susie Wedge Sandal, I recently received from BZEES in a slate color (called Morel Shimmer Fabric) I have desired to add to my wardrobe for summer styles.  These are lovely and I thought of them when I saw the Sleet color in this collection. I have more BZEES in the slide show below…fun, comfortable, washable shoes!  I will look to add some blue depth and perhaps some almond oil to my wardrobe….but it may already be there!

I love what Tish Jett writes about neutrals in Forever Chic: “Frenchwomen of a certain age have built their wardrobes upon foundations of neutrals.  They add spice with a few magical, highly personal finds.  That way they own the look.  To those who say a neutral based wardrobe is boring, Tish responds “Anything but. It’s intelligent, ageless, and always, always chic.  Best of all, it makes getting dressed so easy.  Within the spectrum of neutrals, there are vast nuances, textures, and possibilities.”

TODAY’S KEY POINTS

In this post, I hope you will take away the trend colors for Fall 2020 and for 2021.   Being aware of the trends, helps us to stay current with our styles and youthful.  Often, we can find ways to wear the colors we already own in order to be on trend.  It also helps us to understand what we are seeing once the new styles hit the stores and websites.

Also, the takeaway today for elegant style is to focus on less is more and begin to understand what is in your closet that works…and say good bye to the rest.  Also, elegant wardrobes are founded on strong neutrals.  If you don’t already know your own personal neutrals that work best in your wardrobe, then make that a personal project: Discover what they are. Remember the four beauties above I showed you from Pantone.

Hopefully by the time we reach the point where we have cultivated our everyday elegance, we will all look back and be thankful for the lessons we learned.

Pamela Lutrell for Goli GummiesThere are several ways that I generate income through this blog in order to cover business expenses and give myself much needed income.  Purchases through the slideshow links is one way, ads on the page is one way and a new way is through ordering or re-ordering the GOLI Apple Cider Vinegar gummies through me with my GOLI LINK HERE.  Again, if you are not familiar with the benefits of apple cider vinegar, you should speak with your personal physician.  My husband and I are sold on the benefits and I am proud to represent this product.  I am going to leave this at the bottom of my posts so that when you, friends or family would like to order you can use my link.  Thanks for the support.  This is a great product; as well as, the ones below!

  1. When I first saw the Pantone color palette, I was immediately drawn to the neutrals. I agree with you that “less is more,” and that certainly defines the way I interpret elegance. Even though I’m more creative with my summer wardrobe (just love pretty summer colors!), I look in my closet and see a foundation of neutrals. Some things are being upgraded to give me more mileage, but you can do so much with neutrals, and add interest with more colorful accessories. As I transitioned to retirement from an office, my needs changed a great deal. I do make an effort daily to dress well as it elevates my mood and even makes me move around more and get things done. Very cute shoes you’re wearing! They do look comfortable, and washable is a bonus. The looks at the top appeal to me in their simplicity. Very classic and modern!

  2. I’m a big fan of Military Olive and have lots of that color in my wardrobe. It’s a wonderful neutral that pairs well with many other colors. I especially like it with black and I find that I can wear both all year round.

I’ve never shopped the Nordstrom sale so I will check into this year.

  3. I love military green as well…I will be promoting the Nordstrom sale a lot on this blog. Thanks for being here!

  4. My favorite colors from the Pantone selections are the same as yours. I realize that I am buying more, and more in the purple/magenta color As my hair gets more gray, and I’ve always had much blue and true red in in my wardrobe. I find that when I wear all neutrals like the black and white outfits you show from a store display, I feel the need to add some color so perhaps I need to develop more elegant ideas. Pure white, not off white like the Pantone color Almond Oil , is my better color choice as a neutral, but I have to work at not throwing a colorful scarf, necklace, or vest or wrap on a white top. I am enjoying your developing this idea of elegance, and realize that I have much to learn.

  5. Me as well…Celia. My post tomorrow is about that learning process…hope you will be here. I think deep purple with gray hair is stunning! Thanks for being here.

  6. I try to follow the saying by Coco Chanel about accessories…Before you leave the house, look in the mirror and take one thing off. To me elegance is not flashy but understated.

  7. I am going to begin to speak more about this tomorrow, Sue. Hope you will join in.

  8. What fun fall colors!! I love the orange, peach and pink tones, and the bright green is beautiful. I would wear each of these fun colors, and of course the navy blue neutral. I look better with a true white rather than the cream color, and that olive is a color I am always searching for in pants as the pairs I’ve had in the past were really versatile and I found I got lots of wear out of them. I like them fairly tailored, which can be hard to find, so hopefully there will be lots of choices available this fall.

  9. I think there will be, Connie. Seems that retailers want to come back strong and step up their games. We will see who does the best with that!

  10. All of the colors are good for me except the light peach which washes me out since I have gray hair. I’m enjoying the elegance journey and after one year of following various fashion blogs I have learned that less is more and flash in the pan fashion ideas are usually not worth the cost. My journey is helping me find my style favorites and using what I have mixed with an occasional new purchase. I’m currently studying necklines and finding that large v necks aren’t for me and something like a collar centers my look better. Thanks for your great columns. Maybe a column about low lights would be interesting.

  11. Thanks for the suggestion, Mary. I will put it on the list. Next to V necks, wearing a collar is my favorite so I get why you feel that way.
Thanks so much…more about elegance tomorrow.

  12. I am trying to transition my neutrals over to navy, olive and cognac. Pastels always wash me out, but recently so much black does too. Half my wardrobe is black and I do not want to start over. So I will need some “new neutrals” combos that work with black (especially black pants …. have those in multiples!) and that olive might be a good one. Last year I wore bright navy with black and was very scared, because I was taught never to do that … but it looked good! My other colors I favor for fall are cranberry and rusty reds/orange. While I was long ago determined to be a winter for my high contrast dark hair and eyes with pale skin, as I gray (covering with a cool blonde), I can see that in fact, my skin tone is warm. Very, very confused as to color these days, and I used to feel so confident in my black. Honestly, I feel quite lost as I think about fashion these days, with changes in coloring as I age, a good quality work wardrobe in place, yet with retirement on the horizon.

  13. I love to wear black with my olive pants! Never knew it might not be right…it does look good together. Perhaps it will help you to follow my transition…though I have not made that decision to go gray just yet…but I am going to go blonder. Come read tomorrow, Linda as I begin the evaluate where I have been and where I am going. (I love black so much…it will stay with me!)

  14. I’m really enjoying these posts. Love the less is more concept which is how I dress favoring neutrals. I’ve tried wearing more color but never feel comfortable when I do so staying true to myself wearing blues, cream & olive shades. So happy to see these colors trending now!

  15. I can wear the orange, sandstone & red as they show up on my monitor (clear & bright), maybe the Classic Blue if it’s cool enough (except I don’t like blue very much & rarely wear it). I like the Military Olive, although I’d have to try it in person as I can wear some olives but not all. The rest are all too muddy for my winter colouring, even with my “new” grey hair. My best neutrals are bright white, clear black & (I’ve recently discovered!) cool silvery greys that look striking with my hair now it’s no longer blonde.

BUT: wow, do I love the 2 outfits you show, the simple white shirt with black pants & the black jacket & pants w/ white! Just perfect! I’d tuck the blouse in or wear a shorter top in the second one as I don’t care for the look of a long top hanging out from under a jacket, although I know that’s the “look” these days. I’d wear it with dramatic black earrings, maybe a silver necklace & short black boots with a 2″ heel to emphasis the short jacket & give me some height. The blouse & pants: multiple silver necklaces, big silver earrings, my usual bangles & rings, & metallic silver shoes — maybe those Suzie Wedge Sandals you’re wearing, which I love. (Don’t you love putting together a look from a picture!)

I look forward to your adventures with a capsule wardrobe. I know the theory & love the idea but have never been able to put it into action, even though I’ve pared my closet down dramatically over the past couple of years. With luck you’ll give me the inspiration I obviously need.
