In Search of my New Life-style: Next Stop: Eileen Fisher at Dillard’s

Eileen Fisher for Fall 2020 at Dillards on Over 50 Feeling 40

Time to have some fun!  Tuesdays have become the days that I share with you my search for a new personal, life-style now that I am no longer in the professional (go-to-an-office) world. I am still working from home, but my new life leaves room for a more casual chic style.  In my search, I am seeking what I think looks best and fits my new life…  Garments I can get mileage from and fill some wardrobe gaps I currently see.  I am also looking for ideas of how to style pieces I currently own.

Today we head over to my favorite Dillard’s in The Shops of La Cantera and spend time there only with Eileen Fisher.

FIRST FOCUS: NAVY

Navy Blue Eileen Fisher on Over 50 Feeling 40

Let me begin by saying that I have been a huge fan of Eileen Fisher for years.  I love her sustainable fabrics, designs, and quality. This top is organic cotton linen, cooler and lighter.  I also like that Eileen Fisher, herself, promotes us wearing her clothes anyway we can…she doesn’t mind if we shop a quality department store, her own website, or Ebay…she just likes to see us in her clothing.  I love her navy blue and tried on several pieces since navy is an area of my wardrobe I would like to shore up.

I know online that it is difficult to tell navy from black…but all three pieces of this outfit are navy.  I wanted to check sleeve length in different garments, fit and to see how wearing along scarf this way looks without a jacket or cardigan.  Of course, it does look good without the scarf, as well.  This was my favorite outfit of the day.  There were many items in navy which was encouraging…sometimes it is not that easy to find.

SECOND FOCUS: DRESSES

Organic Linen Eileen Fisher Dress at Dillards on Over 50 Feeling 40

I have not worn dresses in a long, long time.  I just have been more confident in my pant outfits for work and even nicer functions.  So, I wanted to start trying on some dresses to see about returning them to my new life-style.   True confessions:  If I were to get dresses, my legs need some loving!  I would need to get a little tinted lotion on them quickly…they are pastey!  When my wonderful sales associate at Dillards suggested I try on this Organic Handkerchief Sleeveless Linen Dress with the Organic Linen Gauze Textured Weave Cropped Poncho, I was skeptical.

I did not think I would like it…but, in fact, I liked it a lot!  The pieces are on sale, but I did not purchase at this time.  I do want to keep this style in mind and it is a good example of trying things on that you might not think will work and listening to a knowledgable sales associate.  Sometimes it’s a nice surprise!

I also liked this navy shirtdress as well.  This is a great transition piece of summer to fall. It is not on sale, but I did like the dress and might consider it in the future…once I start working on these legs!!  The important takeaway here is that I am encouraged to wear dresses again and add them back to my wardrobe. They are so easy…especially with warmer weather.  It has been so long since I looked at myself in a dress.  It was important that I do this.

THIRD FOCUS: SUPER CASUAL

Eileen Fisher Jeans at Dillards on Over 50 Feeling 40

It is kind of good that this image is fuzzy, because I did not like the look that much.  This tunic is in fun colors, but the fit on my curves was just not a flattering one.  If I was smaller, I would wear it with leggings.   I liked the jeans better with the cuffs pulled down rather than cuffed ,but her jeans are super comfy.

LAST FOCUS: BELOVED BLACK

Eileen Fisher Black on Over 50 Feeling 40

Just because I am researching my navy doesn’t ever mean I will stop wearing my beloved black.  This top is beautiful and has sheer sleeves.  If I was in need of another black tunic, it would be a contender.  Very nice, and went great with this ruana….

My friends at Dillard’s can confirm the fact that I usually purchase Eileen Fisher pieces on sale.  It is easy to find them for great prices….so don’t be afraid of the full price items you see.  What did I learn on this trip??

  1. That I like navy and I am excited to add more to my new life-style. I did purchase a pair of navy pants on this trip that were on deep discount…Score!
  2. I hope to wear more dresses in the future and to return to casual dresses next summer.  This trip gave me confidence to do just that.
  3. I had ceased wearing scarves in the last two years, but I am now encouraged to bring them back occasionally.  I just really like the vibe they communicate.

A WORD ABOUT DILLARD’S

On Sunday, we told clothing retailers what would make us loyal customers and keep us as loyal customers.  In my estimation, Dillard’s is doing it right.  I get great service, can try clothing on, have a variety of sizes and price points readily available, and am treated like a customer should be. The team at The Shops of La Cantera are doing it well!   They actually responded after the post on Sunday…the only retailer to respond so far, and we are looking at a possible event for September!  Some of my favorite events have been at Dillard’s.

The sad thing for me, is that Dillard’s left the program where I can link to them and make commissions.

I highly recommend shopping Dillard’s online and in-store, but for now, let me share these places where you can find Eileen Fisher and her beautiful garments which are perfect for a casual chic lifestyle and it does provide income for me.  Thanks!

  1. Dillards brings back fond memories for me, When I first started working, Lerners was my go to…as I earned more, then it was Dillards. But when I moved to the East from the Midwest, they werent as big of a presence, so I had to diversify….
Im so with you on that linen dress, I would never have tried it. but it looks great on you, now I think I need to open my mind when browsing… just wonder about that material though…could i get to my destination without the rumbling, dont know.

  2. I love Eileen Fisher’s clothes, unfortunately not to be found easily in Europe. The first navy pieces are in my opinion perfect on you, very stylish, but I have to say I fell in love with the grey dress and the white “thing” on it. It suits you so well, I found you elegant in a very contemporary and casual way. All the best from a quite hot Paris.

  3. I am impressed that Dillards responded to you about our comments. Good for them, but they were not in the ‘bad’ group in my opinion. When I say the grey linen dress, I drooled a bit. That is so pretty, and I have a couple skirts that style in linen as well. I am glad you did not like the green sweater and rolled up jeans look. That was the one I said to myself, not so much for this one. The thought of a fashion show or something sounds wonderful and I wish I could attend one just for fun. The logistics of distancing and cleaning will be difficult but that is an outing I could try.

  4. Dillard’s does appear to be doing things right…especially after reading on Sunday what women want…they seem to have it! I know events will be difficult, but perhaps small ones can happen soon. Thanks Diane.

  5. Pam, you look wonderful in those dresses. Seriously! From these photos, truly there is no reason you should keep them out of your wardrobe. You look fantastic! And I really like the navy looks you tried, that dot top is good to see. I know with EF you see mostly solids, so I like the pieces that are a little different, and have different texture. Her clothes are so comfortable and chic. I’m adding more navy too. Keeping the black, of course, but definitely having a navy moment! That handkerchief linen dress though Pam, just amazing!

  6. These two dresses increased my confidence with dresses again. Sometimes we just need to try on what we think we no longer wear! Thanks Karen!

  7. I have a couple of casual knit dresses from Talbots, and although I’ve worn them some, I don’t wear them as often as I thought I would, and I almost never wear a skirt. Just a cautionary comment. I’m a pants, jeans, tank, and cardigan or linen shirt used as topper person, and I’ve decided to stop fighting it. When I go back to buying clothes, it will be the best tanks, cardigans (linen knit is wonderful in summer, and I have a couple of mesh ones from Chico’s) and pants I can find. I too would like more navy in my wardrobe, and the search for cognac/amber in clothing and not just accessories continues. While I’m not interested in a capsule wardrobe per se, I am interested in developing my own color palette. I love seeing these dressing room try ons. What a great way to show a lot of clothing on a real person without having to buy and store it all. Better for the environment and pocketbook.

  8. I love that cognac/amber color your are mentioning Linda. I will keep my eyes open for it and let you know! Thanks for being here.

  9. Pam, I have not purchased a dress in about ten years. I think of wearing dresses to attend occasions like parties, weddings, funerals, church, but obviously am not attending any of these currently. However, when I did in the past, I did not feel comfortable wearing my heels or flats without wearing hoses. My legs are not just pasty, but also very “veiny”, and I did not want to expose them to the light of day! And my shoes hurt my difficult feet if I did not wear hoses. I have never bought any Eileen Fisher clothing because of their price , but have not thought of looking on EBay where it might be more reasonable. And I do love my scarves along with my ruanas, kimonos, long vests. I’m very cold-natured which is one reason I am more comfortable in pants, and having a scarf around my neck keeps me warmer. And I usually wear a third piece of clothing like my kimono and vests.

  10. I just purchased EF leggings on EBay brand new and love them! Ebay is a great place for affordable fashion. Thanks for sharing Celia… your reasons are so similar to why I feel more confident in pants!

  11. I agree that the dress and topper were a great look on you.

I would wear that topper with a nude camisole, with pants. Definitely some versatility there. I don’t wear sleeveless often, due to the logistics and mess of sunblock. Sleeveless under a topper: yes.

The shirt dress is also one of your best looks here. They are so comfortable!

  12. I agree with the other ladies this morning that you look terrific in the linen dress with white topper. What a great look to go for brunch with the family, attend a wedding or shower. . . .anything, really. We do not have Dillard’s up here in Oregon, but I have occasionally gone online to view something after seeing advertisements in the Southern Living magazine I used to take. It seems like a store I would definitely enjoy. Just to let everyone know, I popped on to the Lands End site through your link yesterday. Purchased a lovely new bathing suit on clearance AND on sale for 40% off. Free shipping. No tax to Oregonians. Yippee! So if anyone is looking for end of season swimwear, there was so much to choose from. Their suits are fantastic quality!

  13. Thanks so much, Connie!! I am actually looking for a swimsuit! And thank you so much for using the link I provided. If you save those links. you can use them anytime and I will make a small commission! Thanks ladies.

  14. Thank you Pam for listing Ebay. I love Eileen Fisher but I am on a budget ! You look lovely in everything!
    Take care, be well,Francesca B.

  15. From my vantage point you look great in almost everything. I agree the green tunic was a no no. I think the fear in dresses is centered on our legs or our hips. The dress must brush our bodies in just the right way. You looked great. Maybe a tad bit of touch of tanning cream? Legs can be transformed! Love your blog!

  16. I know…I think I need more than a tad! You are so sweet…thanks for being here, Paulette!

  17. WOW!! You look marvelous in the first dress in this post. Like you I haven’t worn dresses in years. Thanks for sharing your journey you give me inspiration.

  18. In my most proper finishing school matron’s manner *wink* “May we have a word about our legs, shall we? There’s leg makeup now. Colours to enhance the softest pearl to the richest ebony gams.‘‘

Sally Hansen has a fine quality one. Fairly well sweat/smudge/transfer proof once dried. Jergen’s has/had a similar product; haven’t seen it this Summer. Amazing products to consider. You can always dedicate an eyeliner pencil to draw proper hosiery seams *grin*.

When/if you wear skirts & dresses more often, you’ll notice your skin naturally darkening just by having the legs uncovered. Doesn’t take any “lying in the sun tanning”.

  19. Thank you to the finishing school matron…can always use her thoughts and advice!!

  20. I would not have given that gray dress a second look, but it looks great on you. I haven’t worn dresses in quite some time. I have a couple that I have kept just in case. I have skorts that I wear in summer, & that is about as close to a skirt these days.

  21. If it had not been for the sales associate, I would not have tried it on. But, I am really glad I did. Though I did not purchase it, it will give me confidence the next time I need to go dress shopping for a special occasion. Thanks Becky!

  22. I just discovered you I definitely plan on following you All my clothes are Eileen Fisher I have no problems buying Eileen Fisher on Ebay or anywhere it is sold. On Ebay I am careful to buy from buyer’s who allow returns. I just bought the dress in two colors. One may be to big and two of the tops Love love the navy What to add it to my Eileen Fisher wardrobe
    Thank you for your blog

  23. Hi Milo, so happy to have you join us! I am always happy to meet a fellow Eileen Fisher fan! Let me know what other brands and needs you like to see addressed. So glad you are here.

  24. I wanted to let you know that I am very pale skinned and just tried Jergons tanning lotion in the light to medium color. It’s great! It looks so natural, didn’t streak, doesn’t have that horrible fake tan smell and you see color right away and it dries fast. Did not come off on my clothes either. I love it and the best thing is it’s only $8.95. I looked nice when I went up to visit my daughter up in Portsmouth , NH. Try it. You’ll love it. Let me know what you think , if you try it. Just be sure to exfoliate first and then I put on body lotion and the then used the tanning lotion.

  25. I have used it and recommended it on the blog, Brenda! You are right… it is great! I just stopped about two months ago because I wasn’t wearing dresses…I think these dresses have convinced me to start using it again!

  26. Loved most of the looks…but, the white/light shoes threw the looks askew! Sure that isn’t what the stylish you would wear, so the barefoot photos were much better!
Positive comments on the grey/white dress….I’m not quite sold on it!

  27. Catherine, my name is Crystal, I am a sales specialist for Dillard’s here in the beautiful State of Florida. I would be glad to help you shop anytime via live feed. I actually have several clients I assist with shopping from all over the world and it would be a pleasure to offer you the many brands that Dillard’s and I are honored to carry in our stores. Please feel free to reach out to me by email for further contact information. ward.crystal62371@gmail.com Hope you have a wonderful day.
And Pam, I love the Eileen Fisher selections you chose for your new wardrobe of leisure. The fabrics you have chosen are fashionable yet comfortable. Thank you again for shopping with Dillard’s.

  28. That linen dress is SO cute on you! And so is the navy shirt dress, especially with that pendant you’re wearing. Trade the white sandals for navy sandals or espadrilles & you’ve got yourself a real winner in my estimation. I’ve had some wonderful experiences listening to sales’ staff who know their beans, trying things I’d never have given a second look if left on my own. I mentioned yesterday that I enjoy being challenged & surprised by something new & this would qualify. I tend to get into a little mind-rut & stay there unless given a push.

In fact, seeing you in these two dresses is making me seriously contemplate giving them another try myself. I’ve never worn them much & in recent years have avoided them because my legs, while firm from all the walking I do, are pasty & unattractive & would need some attention before I bared them to an unsuspecting public. Thanks to your readers for their suggestions in that regard!

  29. Crystal, thank you. Dillard’s is lucky to have you as a sales associate. The Dillard’s team at The Shops at La Cantera in San Antonio take good care of me, but I am posting your comment so my readers can see and perhaps there is someone in the beautiful state of Florida. Thank you for reaching out!
