Affordable ideas for fall clothing and fall recipes always served with encouragement

Pamela Lutrell in a fall Goodwill SA find on over 50 feeling 40

Happy Monday, everyone!  Monday has become the day when I give you ideas for ways to style affordable fall clothing, and cook affordable fall meals.

This is also the day when I offer some encouragement for getting through these challenging times.

FIRST…FALL CLOTHING

Pamela Lutrell wears cable knit poncho from Goodwill San Antonio

I am so happy to start my week off with cool autumn breezes blowing in and blowing out the humidity.  I love it! So this cable sweater poncho is a great choice for going out and about.

Where did I get it?  My local Goodwill San Antonio! For $4.99.  One thing great about living in warmer weather climates is that many of the donated/thrift items are new or like new.

We just do not have cold weather long enough to wear clothing out.  I was very excited when I found this poncho!  I will wear it often! Today, I am styling it with:

Talbot’s Pull On Jeggings

JJill’s classic white shirt

Aerosole camel flats (purchased on sale over the summer)

My new Patricia Nash handbag from Dillard’s (gifted for 10-year anniversary post)

I have owned the pin I am wearing for so long that I do not remember where it was from originally.

BEEF STEW…LET’S TALK

Beef Stew Recipe on Over 50 Feeling 40

My good friend, Leigh Ann, sent this Beef Stew recipe my way.  She said it originated with her mother and that it is a family favorite…especially in the fall and winter.  Here is the recipe:

5 Hour Beef Stew by Leigh Ann

2 pounds of stew beef, cut into cubes

4 carrots, quartered

2 or more medium potatoes, quartered

2 stalks of celery cut into pieces

1 Medium green pepper cut into pieces

1 medium onion, cut into pieces

Place meat and vegetables in a heavy baking pan or casserole. Sprinkle over all 3 tablespoons of tapioca, 1/1/2 scant teaspoon salt, 1 tablespoon sugar and a dash of pepper.  Pour over all ingredients 1 12-oz can of V-8 juice.

Cover with a heavy lid and bake at 250 for five hours…do not remove the lid while cooking.

I was really intrigued by this recipe, because it is very different from how I make beef stew…which is on stove top and includes the secret ingredient of All Spice.  But, I think I will give this a try and see what Mr. B thinks!

So, how do you make beef stew?  Let’s hear some ideas from this audience because you have already sent great ideas our way!!

STEPPIN’ OUT INTO FALL

Pamela Lutrell wears colorful shoes for fall

When planning your colorful fall styles, remember fun on your feet!  I picked up this pair of suede Cynthia Rowley flats a couple of years back at Marshall’s.

I love to wear them in the fall.  You can just barely see that I have styled them with my military green pants on this day.

Also, make sure your step out with your smile.  I know it has been a challenging year, but choose to enjoy the season’s gifts of color and refreshment.  Remember, autumn reminds us of the beauty in aging and this year reminds us that our normal life will return.

  1. I love the Albert Camus quote! Isn’t that so true? I love going for walks this time of year to hear the crunch of the leaves that have already fallen, and to look for the ones that have the beautiful colors and take photos. I have some plans this year for the photos I’ve taken of leaves! And your suede flats are beautiful Pam! How perfect for this time of year, and the color is gorgeous! Your featured outfit is fall-perfect – and what a find on that poncho! I would have grabbed that one too. The style and color, AND the price are definitely winners! I like it with the white shirt peeking out and the jeggings. Such a good look! The pin is a fun touch, kind of unexpected and makes a statement. Very nice look! Thank you for sharing the recipe for beef stew! It seems the V-8 juice would give it very good flavor (can imagine also using the spicey version of V-8 here). I will give this a try, and like the idea of baking it. Like you, I’ve always made mine on the stovetop. Usually I don’t even use a recipe, just whatever vegetables are on hand, same with meat, sometimes no meat, just beef broth, and splash in some wine for flavor. It’s definitely going to be stew and soup weather here this week, and I think I’ll take this recipe along when I stay with the grandsons at the end of next week. They’ll love it! Have a wonderful Monday!

  2. Pamela, wow such a lucky find on that beautiful poncho! You look stunning today in your outfit, love the color of the flats! Happy Monday and enjoy the slightly cooler weather!

  3. I can almost taste that yummy looking dish. I have always made mine on the stove so maybe give this a try. I might have to leave the house for the last few hours as the aroma would have me wanting to peek. I wonder if this would translate into an instant pot meal as well. Good shopping for you with that poncho. I do love a good thrift browse, it is good for the spirits.

  4. Wow what a stroke of luck finding that poncho and you have styled it perfectly. The size of the pin is perfect with the weight of the material too. Looking good!

  5. Pamela, you and I would make good thrifting buddies! If we didn’t live on opposite sides of the country that is. Now I’m craving beef stew!

  6. This is one of my favorite outfits on you! You look so good in it and I love the pin on the poncho…I never thought of doing that.

  7. I remember my mom making this beef stew recipe when I was still living at home. I remember it because of the tapioca, not something you would think belonged in beef stew. It was always wonderful to come home to the great aroma of the stew baking in the oven on a cold day. That poncho was quite the steal & looks great. As others noted before, your Goodwill is much nicer than the ones near me. Fall is definitely in the air here this week, too.
