How I Style A Fall Utility Jacket Over 50 + A Goodwill Boutique Opens in San Antonio

Pamela Lutrell in a Fall Utilitarian Jacket

Happy Sunday!  Today I wanted to show you how I styled my olive green utility jacket recently…as a woman over 50…and also share a special opening in San Antonio!

THE OUTFIT

Pamela Lutrell in a Johnny Was Scarf on Over 50 Feeling 40

For this day, I took a lightweight utility jacket I have owned for several years and styled it with

Talbot’s Sculpt Pull On Denim Jeggings

Chico’s Animal Print Mesh Tank

Johnny Was September Scarf

Copper Cole Haan ballet flats (Owned for years)

Gold/Bronze Leather Soft Surroundings Bracelet (Owned for years). Similar to the Acelin Bracelet Now On Sale

Chico’s Leopard Handbag with wristlet hold

I have always considered this jacket to be ultra casual…something to throw over jeans and a tee shirt.  Which you certainly can do, but since these jackets are on trend this year, I am going to pump up the looks a bit more with what I add….like a silk scarf!

Pamela Lutrell mixes prints in a fall outfit

It is a little difficult to see in this photo, but the scarf has a lot of brown, and bronze in it…so I liked it with this outfit since the scarf also has the blues and greens.  I do not often mix prints, but I liked how this worked out.

THE EVENT

Goodwill Accents Boutique in San Antonio with Pamela Lutrell

Last Friday, our local Goodwill San Antonio opened a special boutique called Goodwill Accents and it only carries accessories! Pretty cool, right?

Brighton Accessories at Goodwill Accents in San Antonio

The selection of high quality/ designer brands is vast and they were re- stocking feverishly the whole time we were there. I will share with you my treasures later, but first meet my friend Leigh Ann, who attended the preview with me.

Leigh Ann with Coach Purse from Goodwill Accents

Everything we bought was practically new or new…in mint condition.  This small blue purse by Coach is the perfect size for Leigh Ann…and though she wanted a black purse, I convinced her this was a better choice…though there were many black purses.

She also took home these gorgeous booties by Brighton.  They fit like they were made for her …inside and outside looked new.

There were so many fun handbags…from Betsey Johnson to Dooney Bourke to Coach to Michael Kors and a few very high end designer bags.

We had so much fun and will return….often!!  San Antonio Goodwill Accents is right next to the larger Goodwill at the corner of Highway 410 at Blanco Road in the LA Fitness/Rooms to Go parking lot area.  You can’t miss it or the fun you will have there.

So, how do you like to wear a Utility Jacket?  Please share your thoughts and always…………………………………………

  1. Your Goodwill is absolutely amazing. I think I’d be in there weekly to see what new offerings there are! They took the time to create beautiful displays, nothing haphazard, just very impressive. You are so fortunate to have a Goodwill like this one. The ones we have here are very sad looking and uninspiring, dingy, no care taken at all. What a contrast!! I love the blue bag that Leigh Ann found! You’re right, black is everywhere and to have a statement color is so much fun! I like how you styled your utility jacket. I will have to borrow this idea for mine, which like you said, I often toss on over jeans and a tee shirt, and it’s actually a very nice jacket and could carry off a nicer look like you’ve created. Your scarf is beautiful, and I think the print mixing works especially well here because all the prints are from nature, from your animal print shirt to the prints in the scarf, just works so well together, like a theme without being cliche, you know? I’m going to remember this next time I wear my jacket. Scarves are wonderful accessories! Enjoy that boutique!! Just truly amazing!

  2. The Goodwill boutique is amazing and such a great idea! We had so much fun and I can’t wait to return. Have fun with your jacket…a little pattern mixing gives some great options!

  3. Oh what a great concept by Goodwill. Hopefully your store is a pilot and other cities follow close behind. I would go there a lot to find fun trendy pieces, while helping my community. I wear a utility jacket all fall. My favorite is with jeans and a flannel shirt and booties, but I’ve dressed it up with black pants, a white blouse, and a scarf. It’s a perfect travel piece. I resisted for the first couple of years as olive didn’t seem like my color, but once I realized it was a neutral, I fell in love. So much so that I also have a vest.

  4. Hi Amy, I think the concept is in other cities, though I only know of Austin. I agree that it would be popular most everywhere!

  5. Firstly, I love the scarf you are wearing, it would fit right in with my drawer full. You look very pulled together and comfortable for shopping. I have never heard of Accents from Goodwill, is it only in the U.S.? That would be extremely dangerous for me as the accessories section is always calling me. What a selection. I would be in there waaaaay too often. The items your friend got were looking like new, and that is the fun of the search. Can’t wait to see what treasures you found. Enjoy your Sunday.

  6. As long as I’ve been reading your blog, I’ve envied your Goodwill Store because you so often find and share such great finds. As mentioned above, my closest store is so haphazardly organized that I hesitate to even venture in. You are most fortunate, as you have stated, that your store, and now this boutique store is available and so organized and clean. In today’s world where so many items are purchased to be used quickly and discarded, it makes such good sense to recycle gently worn or used things. I have clothing that I wore for years that literally I retrieved from a dumpster once, and was distressed when they eventually were too thread-bare to wear any longer. I’ll be looking forward to your latest purchases.

  7. Wow, a gal could go crazy just looking at all the pretties and trying to make choices! After all, accessories always fit, no matter the number on the scale. I do love your outfit and the way you styled it. The scarf is perfect!

  8. The Goodwill San Antonio team is so efficient and talented. Every store is well done. But, I have to also stress the support and generosity of the local community to donate such amazing items! It is truly a treasure hunt.

  9. Thanks Donna…I love this scarf and the fact it is called September is just icing on the cake!

  10. Wow! That Goodwill store is gorgeous! I’d be going every week if I lived there. As another lady commented, accesories always fit regardless of the number on the scale. Our Goodwills are grungy, dingey and disorganized so tend not to go unless I have a purpose to. I have a few olive khaki utility jackets of difference warmth; so much so that my hubby calls them my “Rambo” jackets. I wear them with sweater dresses, jeans, and leggings. Its my go to jacket. Have a blessed Sunday!

  11. Now that I’m retired and I have plenty of time, I love trolling the thrift shops in my area. Palm Desert/Palm Springs is a Mecca for second hand stores. I have found some great golf tops! I hope the Goodwill here adds the boutique. I own 3 utility jackets which are pretty much the heaviest coat one needs here.

  12. I am so envious of your new Goodwill store! The jewelry section alone makes me nearly swoon. We have nothing like that here at all. To get to a decent thrift store I have to drive an hour on mountain roads clogged with tourist traffic (why are these annoying people not staying home?? No one wants them here, not even the people who usually depend on tourist $$. But I digress . . . ).

You styled that utility jacket like a pro! I have 4 similar jackets in black, tobacco brown, gold & khaki — I love how they’re casual but still classic & chic & they suit me & my usual jeans-&-a-tee look pretty much perfectly. I’ve never been a scarf person (I feel overwhelmed by that much fabric around my neck & down my front & I wear dangly earrings a lot & I find they get tangled in a scarf) but I like the look on other people. I do love your leopard top & bag! And, oh man, those Brighton booties your friend bought? Can you hear me whimpering from all the way up here in Canada? Those are SO me!!! And the bags — even though I’m not into purses, that deep red (to my eye) hobo bag to the right of your head in the 2nd photo would get a closer look for sure 🙂 Thank your friend Leigh Ann for sharing her finds with us — you both look like you’re having such fun!

  13. Do love the scarf Pam and agree that it goes well with your ensemble however I think I would have chosen a plain handbag, but that is just me. As to the shop itself oh I know I would be staking it out as usually the accessory section is what I head to first when thrift shopping , which I shortly plan to do as am on the hunt for a small cross-body bag in a dark mustard colour. Since I have four stores in close proximity and the fact that they’ve just recently re-opened (our pandemic restrictions have been very tight where I am) I’m keeping my fingers crossed that I’ll be successful in my mission ! To conclude; so nice that you and your friend Leigh Ann had a great time and scored some excellent finds. (Wish I had been with you …. ☺.) -Brenda-
