Would You Wear It…Plaid Leggings for Fall Clothing… with Pamela and Jennifer

Would You Wear Plaid Leggings on Over 50 Feeling 40

It’s hard to believe this is the last Saturday in September…Fall marches on!  Today, I wanted to see what you thought about these two mannequins styling plaid leggings for fall clothing.

Welcome to Would You Wear It for fall clothing with me and my friend, Jennifer!

Would You Wear Plaid Leggings for Fall Clothing on Over 50 Feeling 40

On this day, we ask that you tell us personally if you would or would not wear the styles on the displays and explain why.  It helps other women…but be careful not to say it in such a way as to offend someone who may feel differently from you.

If you don’t like the styles…please don’t label them an ugly name…explain constructively why they don’t work…that would be helpful to many and cause them to look at it a different way!

Also, the word FRUMPY does not have a universal definition, explain what it means to you and why the outfit says that to you.

So, let’s get started…look my two displays over and tell us, ladies………………………………

  1. Good morning Pam! In the first frame I first noticed the glen plaid legging or skinny pant and though I do like glen plaids generally I’d like these better if they were a traditional pant. The leg on this pair seems too narrow and ill fitting at bottom of her leg. I do like the two orange/spice tops however, and black leggings are always acceptable. I don’t see that the black pant has any flaw. Not visibly anyway.
On the second frame I see a long cardigan but it’s just not me. I’m not quite sure if it’s the length or the color combinations or both, but it’s just not me. The pant is fine, but as always I’d need to try them on.

  2. I do like the plaid leggings. I don’t wear leggings as pants, as they are shown with the orange top, but would wear them with a top that provided more coverage. The orange top is a color I like, but the top itself is too fussy for my style, due to the sleeves. The print on the floral top is too small for my taste, so I’d pass on that. The cardigan is a good length, but the print is not to my taste, so I’d look for a solid in that. The cardigan covers in back, but with the open front, again, I would not wear that with leggings. I don’t think it would look as good buttoned up. Id wear the cardigan with skinny pants, yes, but not leggings. What it all comes down to for me is not wearing leggings as pants.

  3. I’m tall and over 65. I’d wear the plaid leggings with a long enough top to cover my rear end. However, on the mannequin it’s apparent the plaid wasn’t matched at the side seams. (Can you tell I used to sew a lot?) I realize this is a more moderately priced garment, and maybe I expect too much. A few years ago I bought a Lands’ End plaid flannel shirt with mismatched side seams, over time it bugged me more and more. I eventually donated the shirt, and that would probably be the fate of the leggings if I bought them.

  4. No patterned bottoms for me (and I’m not heavy on the bottom). I like the silhouette on the right, but I can’t wear the color on either of these tops.

  5. I love the look of the plaid leggings. I first outfit is very pretty as is, maybe a statement necklace or a long, simple one.
To me, the sweater in the second photo seems overwhelming -too bulky? or maybe the pattern? I would wear the leggings with a solid sweater, or maybe a tunic top.

  6. I think the outfits are cute – on the mannequins. I am not a fan of legging as pants – solid or print- but would consider a slim plaid pant instead. The tops & sweaters are not good colors for me and I don’t wear crewnecks (short neck, large bust) but I do like the print top and sweater if they were in different colors.

  7. It’s a No for me on all counts. Wrong color tops for my coloring. Not crazy about the plaid pants color combo w/the tops– grey and orange. I certainly agree with Carol (can you tell I used to sew a lot?) & lots of plaids also!) I might consider the design of top on right in a different color and I like the sleeves on left top but it’s too short. Like the print on cardigan but again, the color is not “my color”..,..oh, longing for Pantone color of year this fall (haven’t seen much anywhere!!!).

  8. The first outfit needs a longer top for the leggings. I’m sure the back view is interesting. The leggings look better with the long sweater, but NO to all of it. I don’t wear leggings.

  9. I love these plaid leggings. They are a nod to tradition and a bit naughty as well because they emphasize the curves of your legs. I would wear them with a white T-shirt and long black or forest green cardigan or with an oversized tailored white shirt and a colourful neck scarf.

  10. I love leggings and wear them frequently. On the first mannequin, the color and style of the top is wrong for me. I would prefer something more polished and the orange top does not do it. I especially like the second leggings, but would style them with a softer long or medium length cardigan. The one shown would not be my style at all. Straight legged plaid pants would be so much easier to style with a pretty pullover sweater and/or a blazer.

  11. the plaid leggings are cute, but i suspect my thighs would take center stage in them, so might try them on, being very careful to have some sort of balance with the top. i dont care for the sweater they paired them with…i cant get away with orange, and the material appears to be a bit bulky for the style. i do like the blouse on the other side though, that style hem is very kind to me, and i have a couple of them. i also have a few long cardigans, but that print doesnt appeal to me…i do like the shoes they have paired with it, and wonder how high they are…

  12. In respect to the plaid leggings a definite yes however like your other followers who sew, the plaid would have to match up. As to the tops am loving the orange tone; but unfortunately they are just not my style and I am just not of fan of long cardigan sweaters. Have three of the latter that were gifted to me however they are just not my ‘cup of tea’ so are designated for the Goodwill. For some reason regardless that I have the height to carry them I just feel stumpy (is there such a word or maybe its frumpy …. ☺) when I put them on, yet admire them on others. Wishing you a great weekend Pamela! -Brenda-

Tip: For those reluctant to wear leggings but desire a slim cut pull-on pant, you could ‘try’ going up one size to achieve a looser fit as their fabric content as well as their construction/cut is often basically the same.

  13. I feel that plaid leggings would not flatter my thighs. I wear a size 6 or 8 pants but always have felt like my thighs were huge. I would be willing to try them on and perhaps style with a long sweater or shirt…

  14. I think the leggings don’t flatter the model, and if not, they surely wouldn’t flatter me! I think plaid is a struggle to wear in any fitted garment. I would try on the solid orange top as it is a color that flatters me (deep Autumn), but would have to see if the tie at the waist emphasized my tummy too much. I like the cardigan in the next pic, with its subtle giraffe print. However, as one of the trendy animal prints (vs leopard), it would have to be priced appropriately. I would also have to make sure the color would go with the navy and cognac I’ve been trying to work in as my base neutrals.

  15. I have plaid leggings already, so yes! Mine are subtle hunter green with black. Subtle is best at this stage of life. They remind me of the early 80s music scene, when plaid ruled, and mixing plaids was a thing.

  16. Sure I’d wear the leggings…they would be a welcome change from jeans! BUT under a long tunic in a dark color.
I never wear orange in spite of living in Tennessee! Just won’t work for me!
I think the leggings with tennis shoes look cute, can’t see older gals in leggings and heels!

  17. I don’t often wear patterned pants or leggings, but I do like the plaid ones shown here. The orange sweater is too loud for me and too short to wear over leggings. The other look is better, but I don’t care for the pattern on the sweater, so I wouldn’t wear it.

  18. Mismatched plaids and stripes drive me crazy, and I find that in both expensive and inexpensive clothes. My mom taught me that!

  19. I love everything about these outfits, especially the glen plaid leggings, I tend to like a long top or sweater with leggings so I would probably not wear the top shown with the leggings but like them both and would pair up a little different. The long gold sweater with the leggings is perfect. I’d wear the top with regular slacks or to dress up a pair of jeans. With some chunky jewelry in the spicy fall colors.

  20. I cannot wear leggings anymore. I do like the style and color of the two tops shown. In the second pic I like the cardigan, but not the color. I would like the same design in another color.

  21. I actually have a pair of leggings very similar to the one on the mannequins. I wear them with longer tops/tunics (I need the coverage) and really like them. I wear them with my black patent leather flats or my black ankle boots (depending on the weather).

I like the orange sweater, but not sure if I could pull off that color. It’s very lovely!

The long cardigan is too bold of a print for me. The color goes very well with glen plaid and is a color I wear, but the print is a bit too much for my taste.

  22. Because of you I have ventured out to printed leggings that I purchased at SS. I would definitely wear these black/white glen plaid ones especially at that price. I would pair it with a black long cardigan (with pockets please) and either a white tee or white shirt. The printed cardigan shown is too heavy for this climate in SoCal and two prints together just confuse my eye.

  23. The only thing I would wear here is the glen plaid leggings. I would wear them with a longish gray or black tunic sweater, and suede ankle boots.
The colors in the other garments are a turn off for me and are not flattering so I would never wear them.

  24. Hi Pamela,
Yes to today’s would you wear it. I love the colors, the styles, and the plaid. I think I would enjoy wearing all of these pieces.

  25. I would wear both outfits, but with different shoes. I don’t like leggings with high heels. I would wear them with booties or cute flats. I especially like the second outfit; love the color and pattern in the long cardigan. It brings modernity and fun into the outfit!

  26. I like a subdued plaid in a tailored pant — it’s a beautiful classic fall look, especially when worn with a light-weight sweater under a loose jacket or blazer. But I do NOT like plaid leggings unless the pattern is subtle to the point of invisibility because leggings follow the shape of the leg instead of hanging straight, so the lines of the plaid are always crooked & wavy &, to my eye, very unflattering. That’s probably the sewer in me &, as Carol mentioned, the pattern doesn’t match at the seams in these ones, which screams poorly-made. I do like the darker plaid of these two but would wear them with a long red or grey sweater, or a loose-fit black or red jacket over a V-neck tee. And loafers, not heels. I like orange & wear it well, but I find these two tops too short for leggings altho I’d try the patterned one — which I like very much — with jeans. I’m not a cardigan person; I find they rarely hang nicely if you’ve got any kind of bust unless you’re constantly fiddling with them & long ones are a pain if you’re in & out of a vehicle because they bunch up (& the colour of the one here is not in my palette, either). But you’ve given me some inspiration, so it wasn’t a complete loss as far as “shopping” trips go 🙂 Thank you!

  27. I am glad to see plaid pants coming back and perhaps would try the leggings if I were still going to the gym or out with my hiking group. Alas they have both gone by the wayside thanks to Covid. Orange is not a colour I wear but I would like the print top in a different colour. I like the split hem but would want to see what the sleeves were like not rolled up as we will soon be into heavy coat weather.

  28. While I think these are cute and would look good on others they’re not really my style. I prefer legging to be a solid color (I’m a pyramid body shape) and plaids to be in something less form fitting and the plaid MUST match at seams (I can’t see in the second photo but the top photo doesn’t)! The two orange tops are cute but the solid ones is too short for me to wear over leggings. The long sweater just doesn’t appeal to me…not sure I know exactly why…maybe the color or the pattern, maybe the wide cuff (you can see on the ones hanging on the rack and bottom ribbing, or something else?
