Autumn at Home: Thrifting fall clothing, fall recipes, and inspiration

Pamela Lutrell and Goodwill San Antonio on over 50 Feeling 40

That is what we do here...CELEBRATE autumn (while spending more time at home) by thrifting fall clothing selections, making fun fall recipes, and taking time for inspiration around us.

This is the only season that has two names…fall and autumn.  Autumn is considered the more formal name and my favorite.  But, it seems more in online marketing prefer fall.

I think it to be interesting that only one season is like that!

TODAY’S OUTFIT

Pamela Lutrell in Goodwill San Antonio find

SILVER LINING:  More time to thrift shop and I have loved every single treasure hunt this year!

On a few more posts, I want to show ways to “pump up” our denim and this green & brown silk jacket does that for me.  I discovered it recently during a treasure hunt at Goodwill San Antonio.

The jacket was $4 and I did have it cleaned. I really like it and love adding a fun brooch to the look.  Underneath I am wearing a brown tank top.

Lately, the weather has been such a downer…very warm.  I wish it was more seasonal…but for South Texas this is a fun look and I feel very chic wearing it.  The sleeves could also be cuffed up to reveal the brown.

I think there are so many who are cleaning closets that when I went to Goodwill San Antonio last week, I came home with some great fashion finds!! Will be sharing more later.

FALL RECIPES

Pumpkin Crisp on Over 50 Feeling 40

Oh yum…Leigh Ann made this Pumpkin Crisp and brought some to me.  I did not eat it with the Halo Vanilla Bean Ice Cream as she did, but it was still delicious.  Here is how she made this:

PUMPKIN CRISP

Filling Ingredients:

1 15 oz can of pumpkin

1 5 oz can of evaporated milk

2/3 cup of sugar

3 eggs

1 tsp.vanilla

2 tsp of pumpkin pie spice

1/4 tsp salt

Topping Ingredients:

1 cup of gingersnap cookies pulverized in a food processor to the consistency of flour

1 cup quick oats

1/3 cup brown sugar

1/4 tsp baking soda

1/4 tsp baking powder

1/2 cup softened butter

Fall pumpkin recipes on over 50 Feeling 40

TO MAKE:

Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

Grease  a deep square pan

In a large bowl, whisk together all of the filling ingredients and pour into your prepared pan.

Then, in a medium bowl combine gingersnaps, oats, brown sugar, soda and powder. Then use a fork to incorporate the butter into the dry mixture.

Evenly sprinkle the topping over the pumpkin mixture in your pan.  Bake for about 40 minutes or until the center reaches 175.   Good will ice cream or whipped topping!

FALL INSPIRATION

November in San Antonio from Pamela Lutrell

You can see here that fall is just beginning to show in San Antonio, but soon the trees in my neighborhood will be glorious.  I am inspired and smile every time I open the front door.

Fall in San Antonio. on over 50 Feeling 40

On this morning, I called Mr. B to the front porch to stop and take the time and appreciate the changes of seasons…even in a warm climate.  He stayed on the porch for the longest time just taking it all in.

Sometimes we only have to stop and appreciate what is around us to receive joy for the day.

There are so many days I am thankful to be home.

Now, before you leave today…tell us, do you prefer autumn or fall?

  1. Love the jacket! We all need to come shopping with you at the Goodwill! You always find great items there and we love what you share with us. I love how your posts are always well rounded, not just about fashion. You inspire me daily! Of all the people I follow on Facebook, you are by far my favorite! I look forward to your posts every day.

  2. I prefer “autumn,” but like you said, “fall” is what we hear the most. Autumn just sounds prettier and more descriptive! Your silk jacket is so very pretty, and how wonderful to be on the receiving end of all the closet clean-outs! Your Goodwill store is truly amazing and well thought out, and I wish others would follow suit. How true about taking the time to appreciate the changing seasons, the colors, the smells, the sound of leaves crunching….This is my favorite season for taking walks just to take it all in! We have had temps in the 70’s for about a week now (our Indian Summer) and it has been just perfect weather to be outside. 70 in October and November is much different from 70 in the summer. That will be coming to an end tomorrow, but I have truly enjoyed it. I’m leaving for New York in a few hours, and while they are past peak with the colors, it’s still going to be beautiful being in the area. They live in an area that is referred to as The Enchanted Mountains, and while they are very small mountains, they are still mountains and it’s very rural and beautiful. Savor the season!! Your seasonal decor is beautiful, and while it’s frustratingly warm, I hope you do have some cooler days to enjoy soon!

  3. Love, love, love your smiles! Every time I view your blog I feel happier. I have been trying to shop my own Good Will in my closet😊. Your blog gives me ideas of ways to perhaps use what I already have. Also, older clothes that look too tired I know it is time to give away or replace. Thanks

  4. In the Southern California desert autumn brings the first snowfall high up on the mountains. The view from my front window is not of the usual fall colors but of snow tipped peaks. It’s glorious! Thrift shopping has become one of my favorites since retiring; time to leisurely go through the racks.

  5. Yesterday in northern Ohio, way past our peak but with a few autumn (yes, autumn, such a lovely word) leaves still falling, it was 80 degrees! Unheard of! We are participating in a Holiday Hustle, where you try to walk in our park system 50 miles by the holiday. It’s been fun and a little motivating to do this, though as dedicated walkers, it’s not terribly tough for us. But it’s still a reminder that there is plenty to do besides complain. We sometimes take coffee and a muffin with us, and have our breakfast on the trail. Thanks, Pam, for always keeping positive and uplifting on the blog, and always reminding us that the little things are the big things.

  6. I was feeling down and almost ready to give up reading blogs because of the expensive items being “sold”. Then I came here and you are talking about thrifting! Thank you! I found a substantial 100% cotton sweater ($4), scarf I love ($3.50), REAL leather purse ($4) and booties ($5). I also found a NWT ($275) red, REAL leather jacket for $30! It didn’t quite fit, but that’s what’s out there. I frequently find higher quality items in thrift stores as opposed to new in store.

  7. It is so much fun…isn’t it? Looks like you found some great deals. As an ambassador for Goodwill San Antonio, you will find me showing my thrifting items 1-2 times a month! Stick with me, Lily…I try to cover all price points!!

  8. Oh, what a terrific post today! I like seeing that fresh pop of green in your outfit. Would love to see Karen’s Enchanted Mountains for myself, and am thinking I could make my own Holiday Hustle like Linda was describing (what a great time to set a healthy walking goal). Your question about autumn versus fall made me think of the hauntingly beautiful song, The Autumn Leaves. If you haven’t heard it in awhile, it’s worth listening to and there are many renditions from downright jazzy to melancholy ballad. Anyway! – I prefer ” el otoño” which is Spanish for autumn. Autumn and otoño come from latin, and you can see how the autu and oto are similar, with the ño taking the place of the mn. Otoño is just beautiful to say, and my students always loved using it.

  9. I am so surprised that living in San Antonio I haven’t heard this before but I love the Spanish version and will remember! Thank you for sharing!

  10. Love your upbeat blog focusing on gratitude in these challenging times! You are such a lovely, positive lady. Thank you for adding joy to our days! It is full on winter mode here in Calgary, Canada: snow and cold 27F today. The leaves have fallen. Its a great time to turn on the gas fireplace, make a cup of coffee and watch the snowflakes fall. I love your Good Will stores! The one specializing in accessories is terrific! Once the US – Canada border re opens and we can travel again, will look forward to coming down to San Antonio! In the meantime, will shop my closet.

  11. Coffee and snowflakes! I would love to experience that at least once a year! Thanks for sharing such a picture, Lana!

  12. I’m glad you had the list of stores, today, as I saw something at Jjill to purchase and was able to send a little support your way by using your Jjill tab. It’s so easy to do and makes me feel like my shopping experience helps support a blog I enjoy daily—yours. Thanks.
