A TOUCH OF FRANCE IN THE KITCHEN

Would You Wear It with a touch of France

Iris has been in the kitchen again!  Yes, mostly to celebrate turning 60 this week (welcome aboard!), but she also is teaching me new words.

Do you know what a clafoutis is?  I did not.  According to Wikipedia, “Clafoutis, sometimes spelled clafouti in Anglophone countries, is a baked French dessert of fruit, traditionally black cherries, arranged in a buttered dish and covered with a thick flan-like batter.

The clafoutis is dusted with powdered sugar and served lukewarm, sometimes with cream.”  It looks so good…so from France to the kitchen of Iris Gonzalez, here is

Dark Chocolate Cherry Clafouti

This is a quick and easy dessert recipe you make using a blender.

I like using a mix of fresh and dried cherries. If you don’t like cherries, this basic French dessert recipe can be used with a mix of fresh and dried figs, sliced fresh strawberries, or fresh raspberries. You can omit the chocolate too, although…why?

Ingredients

Unsalted butter for greasing the pie dish

½ cup dark sweet fresh cherries, pitted

½ cup dried cherries

½ cup chopped dark chocolate or dark chocolate chips

1 1/4 cups (12 fl. oz) whole milk

1/2 cup (4 oz) flour

4 large eggs, at room temperature

1/2 cup (4 oz.) granulated sugar

1/8 tsp. salt

1/2 tsp. pure vanilla extract

½ tsp cinnamon (optional) for the batter

½ tsp more cinnamon for dusting on top (again, optional)

Directions

  1. Position a rack in the upper third of the oven and preheat to 350 degrees F.
  2. Butter a shallow 1 1/2-quart baking dish. I use a glass pie plate with good results. Arrange the chocolate and cherries (or other fruit) in the prepared dish. Omit the chocolate, if desired.
  3. Mix remaining ingredients in a blender until the batter is smooth. Pour mixture over fruit, then dust batter on top with cinnamon to taste.
  4. Place the dish on a baking sheet. Bake until browned, 45-55 minutes.
  5. Transfer to a rack to cool for about 15 minutes, then dust with confectioners’ sugar or more cinnamon if desired and serve warm. Serves 6-8.

Should there be leftovers, a slice warmed slightly in the microwave and enjoyed with coffee or tea makes for a delightful breakfast treat.

OK, Iris, count me in!  Let us know if you try the recipe and what you think.  But for today, tell us what you think of the fashion display above.  And may all of this help you to……

  1. i feel like i say this alot but, i couldnt wear it now, but i use to.
i had a favorite set like this in the 80s….the skirt was a light pink gauzy type material with the dropped waist, no belt..and it had a matching top. and it was very pretty and i felt good in it…
what i also had back then was a metabolism, hormones and a gym membership that i was faithful too….lol

  2. Geez, I really wish I could wear this pretty outfit! Unfortunately, it would do nothing for my figure. I am short waisted with a large bust. The blouse on my large shoulders would not be attractive. Also, although I like the print of the skirt, the horizontal pattern on the skirt would add unwanted inches. I’ll leave this pretty outfit to my friends with a different body style. Hope this helps!

  3. My first idea was, nope, then I realized I bought a similar -boho- skirt from JJill on clearance, and am going to wear it with a v-neck t-shirt. So, answer is yes, I would wear this, but not with the puffy sleeved top, as I am busty, and short puff sleeves, are not flattering. Also, they are too, little girl feeling, fussy for me. I do love the red and white combination it’s a great colorful look for spring and summer.

  4. I could wear this. I’m just not a fan of long skirts, prefer at knee. I’m too short. Love the fabric, however and if the manufacturer ever made a shorter (to knee) version, I’d say yes. I have a similar top for summer. My shoulders are not wide so I can handle the cut. All in all I love the look on the mannequin but the skirt is not for me.

  5. Ah, like Sheryl, I will say : no more 🙂 My waist is not what it used to be and the knot would underline that. In any case, I would prefer a simpler tee or top, not with these sleeves which would enlarge a part of me that really does not need it. On the other hand, I love clafoutis (without chocolate) and I would definitely sacrify my waist and any hope to buy these clothes to clafoutis!

  6. This wouldn’t work for me, mainly because I’m not tall and this length rarely works. I do wear skirts and like them a lot, but proportions are everything. I would try it in a petite if that was an option because I like the style and colors, but I’m thinking it’s just a little bit too long. I don’t care for it with this top. I’d pick up a rich color from the skirt instead. You could really dress this one up with bold jewelry!

  7. Like Sheryl stated, so much of fashion today is what we wore “back in the day”. Back when I was a lot thinner. A dropped waist would only emphasize the area where I carry my extra weight today. The skirt is lovely and I would wear it if the dropped waist wasn’t there and also without the tied sash. I don’t particularly care for the top chosen to go along with the skirt. I just can’t seem to wear the puffed sleeves. I would most likely wear it paired with a light weight (like linen) sweater and keep it casual with flat sandals or even sneakers.

  8. I’m not sure. I wore long skirts in the early 90s and looked frumpy. Fortunately, I developed a sense of style. I’m short so I’m afraid the length of the skirt will make me look even shorter especially because I generally don’t wear a heel higher than 1 to 1 1/2 inches. I like the blouse. This is an opportunity for me to try something new and see what I think. I did like reading another reader would wear the skirt with sneakers so that may be an option. I’m going to try the recipe!

  9. Yes I would wear the skirt. I like the length and how it is designed so that there is no added bulk or gathers at the waist. The material appears to be very soft and spring like. I like the color combination of the two pieces. I would not choose the puffed sleeve top for me. I would prefer a top without the “puffed sleeves” I would definitely stop and observe the mannequin when shopping and decide how to tweak it for me. (In another life (taller, thinner, and younger) I would go with the look of the mannequin.

I am looking forward to experimenting with the Dark Chocolate Cherry Clafouti!! It looks delicious.

    Thank you for sharing!!

  10. This is a pretty look, but slightly too boho, feminine, and trendy for my style. If I wear I trend, it is usually only one per outfit.

  11. This really looks like something I wore many years ago. However, the sleeves are not for me with the elastic, if they were loose, maybe. The skirt is a great colour but the tiers, just not a fan for me. I do like skirts but a lot of the looks this spring have the layers so let’s let the younger ones have fun with it and I will pass. As for the recipe, oh my, I would probably eat way too much of it so perhaps a half recipe to try.

  12. Ps. If that skirt was the same in all respects but had godets at the hemline instead I would certainly give it a try

  13. This is my preferred length for skirts and the print is cute. I would take a pass though, based on that dropped waist. The gathers hit at the hip, and that is just a bad place to draw attention on my figure. Don’t need the attention at the sleeves due to already broad shoulders, so no to the top as well. I would shop this look if the skirt were cut slightly gathered from the true waist, pair it with a simple white tee for casual or blouse for dressing up a bit. I have the perfect burnished red dancing shoes to go with it, too! 💃

  14. I think the skirt is pretty and would take a second look because even though I am Petite the print allows it to be shortened. I have to eliminate anything with a border on the hem so would be glad to have something to try on. I prefer it with the matching top on the site that gives it the appearance of being a dress and would allow for versatility in one’s wardrobe. The cream top is not in my colour palette. Alas I would then check the tags and read it is dry clean only. Summer fashions and dry clean just don’t make sense to me or fit in my budget.

  15. I would try the skirt if it were shorter. I am short, & the length of the skirt is not flattering. I do love the print, & it looks like it would be cool on a hot summer day. The top is a no. The puffy shoulders are not flattering to me.

  16. The style of the skirt is cute. I would consider it with a vneck tshirt if it was cotton which it is not. It’s expensive for a poly skirt. The blouse here is a no with those puffy sleeves.

  17. I looks nice on the skinny model but those size “small” days are over for me. I wish there were more choices for women over 50…sigh.

  18. For starters, a no to the blouse namely because I personally do not care for elastic on sleeves unless it is warranted to create a ruffled cuff.
As to the skirt; namely due to my age and even though I do like its style being fitted in the waist’n hip areas I am afraid the pattern influences my choice as ‘not for me’. i.e.: A tad too busy with its horizontal stripe and I seldom wear red. However, if I were to pair it with a top I would more than likely choose a sleeveless one. (i.e.: Tank, camisole or a blouse with an A-line silhouette.) Do like the striped and white skirts in your slide show since more subtle in appearance and know I would get more mileage out of them.
The Clafoutis looks delish! (Thank you Iris and I will definitely give it a try.) -Brenda-

  19. I definitely like the outfit! The skirt is stunning. I would try it on – it looks too long for me, but if it could be altered I would buy it. I like the simple white top, but would not purchase as I have several simple classic white tops that would work with this skirt.

That dessert looks scrumptious. I had it once on a cruise and loved it. I will try this at home. Thank you for sharing the recipe.
