Today's News for Women over 50

Good morning! Welcome to Today’s News for Women Over 50!

For these posts, I curate headlines I believe will be of interest to this audience and hopefully a few that will make you smile.

Today, is mostly fashion news…with one article that answers a question a reader had for me.

I did not find as many lifestyle headlines for you as I usually do because so many articles now are tainted with politics.

Since, I do my best to avoid political talk on this blog…I thought fashion was a good place to spend the day!

I am starting with my favorite story today….a woman of great style and now when I sit at my online church service, I feel underdressed!  La Verne sets a great example for us of how to enjoy life no matter our circumstances.

This past Wednesday on the mid-week Would You Wear It, I featured a display that, like many of you, I was surprised to see at Nordstrom.

I believe that retailers who care about their store front appearance…particularly displays, well kept dressing rooms, and folded clothing will do the most to survive.

But, I also know it take people to do the tasks.  It was interesting to find a similar article in this vein.

Here are a couple of new lines Walmart is featuring for women right now:

I will add that my favorite time of year to visit is over the holidays.

  1. LaVerne looks fabulous, doesn’t she? How wonderful to see a lady take such care to dress beautifully even for online service. Good for her. Hopefully, she’ll be an inspiration to many. I enjoyed the fashion articles today and very much appreciate that you don’t do politics! Lots of good stuff here today!

  2. I love LaVerne…she inspires me so much! Thanks for starting your morning here, Karen. Happy Friday!

  3. Thank you for not covering politics. We have news outlets for that, and I come here to relax. I thought the articles today were fine. I’d heard ballet flats, being round toed, are “out,” which is hard to believe for such a classic. My faves are my Tory Burch foldable ones, as many other brands don’t stay on my feet. One brand I see advertised a lot is Tieks, and I wondered if you or anyone else has ever tried them, and if you have a shopping link with them.

  4. Hi Linda, Thank you so much for asking. I do not have a shopping link with Tieks…but I have heard from friends many good things about them. Top of the list…their ballet flats are beautiful, comfortable and fun.

  5. I like the fact that most of this was fashion. Le Verne is a gorgeous and fun lady, wonder where she stores all her things. The ballet flat article is right up my alley and your slideshow is so tempting. The article from the Wall Street Journal was not available unless subscribed to, so missed that one. I am most certainly not a capsule wardrobe type person anyway. As our stores are still closed for another couple weeks, I am hoping that when they are ready for customers again there will be stock to shop. That is a great presentation of a very interesting town, and a perfect chance to get out and shop local areas. This is another fun stroll through ideas you have found for us. Thanks Pam.

  6. Hi Diane! Sorry about the WSJ article. I do not have a subscription and the whole article is showing for me, so I thought it would work. I do my best to find articles you can get without a subscription, Glad you enjoyed today!

  7. Fredericksburg was on my radar years ago when my sister lived in Texas. Now that I’m in Southern California it looks like a doable road trip this summer for a few days. I love my ballet flats & they never go out of style! I found some no name inexpensive inserts at the dollar store that give me just a bit of support and they are slim enough to fit.

  8. The Bed & Breakfasts fill up fast, Linda. Make your reservations soon for summer.

  9. I had no problems opening the WSJ article although the clothing shown was way outside of what I can pay for clothing. I think that I have seen a segment on a national news broadcast about “Miss ” LaVerne’s dressing for church, and a picture of her closet with all those hat boxes. She reminds me of so many ladies, including my mother, who always wore a hat to church every Sunday. Of course, when I was small we little girls always wore hats on Easter Sunday, and carried or wore white gloves every Sunday. That tells you that I am old! Fashion has definitely changed over the last 74 years for me although I still dress up for church when attending in person,. I cannot make myself wear jeans to church as many do at any time.

  10. I remember those Easter Sundays, Celia! When my husband and I go to services, we dress up a little. But for online? We have been very casual…LaVerne may have inspired me to change that!!

  11. I loved the “church lady” article. I would wear every one of her outfits; or at least all the color combos. Just beautiful! I also enjoyed the ballet flats slideshow. I have a few pairs and they are great, but you really hit it out of the park with the different colors and versions of them.

  12. Linda, just wanted to let you know about Tieks. I have 4 pairs in classic colors. Black, navy, red, and taupe. They are the most comfortable flats I own. So comfortable, that I chose them to wear at Disney World. No break-in period and if you’re not rough on shoes, they will last a long time. I’ve had mine for 5-6 years and they still look new.

  13. I too must thank you for nit covering politics! We are finally in a less
chaotic time and place I feel, and hope to keep things this way! Hurray!
Loved the article on capsule wardrobes. I need this drilled into me- now retired a few years but still putting together a full yet useful wardrobe. I have sone decent pieces but they are old and dated and though they are in good shape (not worn much) they don’t portray who I am anymore.

  14. LaVerne definitely makes me want to step up my game. What a fabulous lady! I don’t like going into a store where things are in disarray. It is not conducive to buying anything if I have to hunt through piles of items. You provided us with some great information this week, & thanks for keeping this a politics free zone. Have a joyful weekend!

  15. I think that is what many of us are going through, Paulette. I keep getting style adjectives sent to me because women are I a new place in their lives and want to develop a new style. It’s fun!

  16. Interesting point about retailers needing to step up their game in terms of presentation if they wish to woo shoppers back in post-Covid. Something I keep noticing about some of the displays you & others show us is how sloppy & poorly conceived they are, as though some kid who knows nothing about fashion or retail is handed a pile of clothing & told to dress some mannequins. No thought seems to be given to ironing out the creases, straightening the seams, sleeves & hems, putting together an “outfit” or coordinating accessories to make the display make shoppers WANT to stop & have a closer look & even try things on & purchase them. I don’t mind poking through crowded racks & messy displays & piles if I’m thrifting, but if I’m in a retail store where I’m expected to lay out serious $$ for anything I buy, I want it impeccable & obvious that someone cares about both the clothing AND me as a customer. LOVE the article on LaVerne & the one on ballet flats, not my favorite type of shoe usually — I rarely wear flats except for my tennies — but the ones you show are gorgeous!
