Would You Wear It Wednesday with Lavender Cookies

Leigh Ann and I left the lavender festival with a cookbook and a set of lavender seasonings…including lavender sugar.

But, since most of you do not have that…let’s start today with how to make lavender sugar!

LAVENDER SUGAR By Kathy Gehrt

from Cooking with Lavender by Kathy Gehrt

easy to make, lavender sugar can be used in countless ways.  It is delicious sprinkled on strawberries or added to a cup of tea”

1 tablespoon lavender buds (you can purchase a bag at Sonoma Lavender Co) go to Dried Botanical Products or if you grow your own, use it from the garden!

2 cups granulated sugar

*Put lavender buds and 1/4 cup of granulated sugar in a spice grinder or clean coffee grinder, blend for about 1 minute or until mixture is a soft powder

*Add the lavender buds and sugar mixture to the remaining 1 3/4 cup sugar.

*Place sugar mixture in a container with a tight-fitting lid.  Allow to sit for three days before using to infuse the sugar with the lavender flavor.

*As a variation, you can make lavender sugar by layering the lavender buds and sugar in a jar, then straining out the buds when you use the sugar or place whole sprigs of lavender in a jar with sugar.

Tip to clean coffee grinder:  add 1/4 cup uncooked rice to your grinder.  Pulse on and off about 10 times.  Discard the rice, then use a damp cloth to wipe out the grinder to remove any traces of coffee.

Leigh Ann & I are enjoying the products we purchased from the Hill Country Lavender Farm…use this link to order their products when they refresh their inventory after the festival weekend.

They will probably have a bag of buds which can be purchased as well.

NOW BACK TO COOKIES!

Would You Wear It Wednesday with Lavender Cookies

First let me confirm…these are delicious!  Leigh Ann was the cook and her husband even liked them!

She found this recipe to follow, GRANDMA’S LAVENDER COOKIES RECIPE.

However, made these adjustments:

“In place of lavender leaves, I dusted the tops with the Hill Country Lavender Sugar ever so lightly when I baked them.  And I made the glaze with almond milk and a dash of the lavender sugar in place of lavender extract.”

She called them a light tea cookie…they were delicious and I plan to make a batch soon.

That’s out first lavender recipe, but we hope to test and bring to you more.  Please comment on the Would You Wear It display…ask any recipe questions…and prepare tomorrow for some fun as I begin to discuss my Style Refresh!

KEEP SMILING!

  1. Not really loving this top. Horizontal lines at the bottom would not be flattering for me.

  2. I’d try this on if it came in a petite size. I like it, and I like the color and slim line of the pants. I’m not tall, so have to be careful with tunic tops, but I do like this one. The cookies would be so nice to have on hand for guests. I’ll have to make some for the freezer for this purpose (and leave some out for me, of course!!) They would be so pretty with the lavender buds!

  3. I love the color and even the style but feel that the top is too long a silhouette with that pant.

  4. Really like the color and cut of the top. Would definitely try it if I knew which store this was.

  5. I would wear that top. I’m thinking with some capri leggings in white or any of the shades of blue. A pair of sandals, a tote and a straw hat with a blue band and I’m off to the Farmer’s Market!

I will certainly have to try your Lavender Cookie recipe. I’ve long wanted to try some lavender in my cooking. Looking forward to attending a lavender festival coming up here in Southeast Michigan this summer.

  6. Hi Cheryl, if you read the post you will see there is a link right to where the top is! It’s all there for you!

  7. The top is a little too full and faded for my taste. My coloring requires more vibrancy. I do like the deep cuff on the sleeve and the henley neckline, which gives it a bit more style.

  8. The top is too shapeless. The horizontal lines would hit me at an unfortunate place, drawing attention to my hipline. That placement also cuts my body and makes for an unattractive proportion. I do like the colors in the top and the rolled sleeves. No, I would not wear it. I try to find tops that skim my body more closely, but don’t cling either. I can’t see the pants all that well. The fabric looks a bit heavy for the summer and to wear with a linen top. The length of the pants also make the legs look shorter. Maybe with a wedge shoe it would look better.

  9. Good morning Pam. I’m certainly going to try (attempt) these cookies using my gluten free flour keeping my fingers crossed the entire time. Sometimes it works just fine though other times it’s a flop. I’ll still eat them no matter …
The top shown here is a no go for me. It’s too long and those horizontal stripes that hit so low on the body would not flatter at all. In addition, the material looks heavy and stiff to me. It’s humid here in summer and if the fabric is wrong, I discount the piece no matter how pretty it may be.

  10. Though I do have the height; I seldom wear tunic length however might consider this top for casual wear (cottage/tropical vacation) due to its blend of fabric and design. Do likes its pin tuck accent on its back and choice of undergarment would be nude in colour because of the material’s transparency. That said; do not care for it with the dark bottoms and would be apt to pair it with either white or stone-washed denim (skinny or slim cut) jeans or long length (17″ – 18″ inseam) classic fit Bermuda shorts. Footwear would be strappy sandals or slip-on sneakers and my handbag would be a small woven hobo shoulder tote in a raffia. straw or similar. Jewelry would consists of a pair of fun earrings in the lighter blue. Might even attempt a full or french tuck, at the waist-line to give the illusion of more leg length. (Tip: Another way to make your legs appear longer in jeans; is to purchase those that the worn/abrasion/faded area runs center vertical on the legs, as draws the eye upwards.) -Brenda-

P.S.: Oh my, those cookies look delicious!

  11. I would wear this outfit on spring or cooler summer day at home. It looks comfortable, & I like the colors. It is the type of outfit I normally wear on cooler days at home-a tunic top & jeggings. I feel well dressed, yet comfortable.

  12. I like the fabric in this top — it looks so cool & crisp — & if it were solid white or blue I’d give it a try, especially with white pants or capris. I avoid horizontal stripes like these because they cut me in half & make me look even shorter than I already am 🙁 And I can’t figure out the cut at all: the pintucks are a beautiful detail but all the fullness seems to be in the back while the front appears to have none at all (which could just be the model’s pose) — I prefer a loose floaty fit for hot weather.

So glad to see people sharing my love of lavender! I grow it (added benefit: the deer don’t eat it — unlike ALL the geraniums ON MY DECK, which have been eaten down to stubs!) & dry it & make sachets for my linen closet & dryer. No cookies, though, as great as they look. I quit sugar & baked goods a couple of years ago & feel so much better physically (no more stiff joints!) that I’m no longer even tempted. I do like to see other people’s baking efforts though!

  13. No, I would not wear it. It’s too big and shapeless. Not flattering at all.

  14. The cookies look delicious. When they say lavender buds, how developed do they need to be? I’d really like to make my own sugar. Also when you say they are a tea cookie does that mean a soft fluffy cookie? We make a lemon one that looks very much like yours and my granddaughter calls them ,” Cake Cookies”. They are very good with a cup of tea.

As to today’s fashion, I would not wear it though the colours are in my wheel house. In my opinion it looks like a tea towel from my kitchen.

  15. I do not know the answer on how developed the buds are, Linda….so sorry. I think your granddaughter has a good description…yes, these are cake cookies! Soft and fluffy!

  16. I bought this shirt but went up a size and am using it for a bathing suit cover up. It is perfect! Light weight and it covers my arms but is not hot. I am very fair and burn easily. It looks great over my multi blue color bathing suit.
