What do you wear in the heat?

What do you wear in the heat?

And just like that…it is Monday!  Welcome everyone! Today I answer a reader question...What do you wear in the heat?

I believe she was asking to know how I stay true to my new autumn colors in a high heat, high humidity climate like South Texas.

This is something I threw on the other day to go down the street and meet a friend for lunch…so I thought I would use it as an example.

What do you wear in the heat?

  1. Fabric Matters

This top was one of my sale purchases from JJill….it is cool, comfy, easy….and brown!  It is also made from one of my favorite summer fabrics…Tencel.

In the summer, the fabric color doesn’t matter as much to me as the fabric itself.  This brown top is just as cool as a lighter color would be….in my opinion.

2. Pant Length Matters

Because of our heat, I do wear and prefer crop or capri length pants.  I really do not wear shorts, so these are cooler than a full length pant.

I agree full length and ankle length have a more flattering, nicer look to them…but in August, it is more about cool than anything.

I have really enjoyed these Chico’s So Slimming Crops with fringe on the hem (a little touch of boho!) and they are on sale!

I am also excited to say that they are looking a tad loose since I got serious about my walking…maybe I need to pick up a pair in a smaller size!!

3. Lighter Accessories Matter

I have worn these BZEES sandals so much this summer…they are a great color and I can walk anywhere in them!!  August is really sandal time around here!

This little necklace is so light and I like the touch of orange it adds to this outfit….once again, I found it at our Goodwill Accessory Store!!

You also may be surprised to know that this bracelet is very light weight….and I have had it for years.  I am usually not aware that I have it on….

Love to wear BZEES..

Then I was off to lunch with a friend.  I have to recommend this new Strawberry, Almond and Goat Cheese Salade at La Madeleine and I added Chicken…really good.

Here are a couple of cute Tencel tops still on the market….

That should give you some idea of how I dress for the heat in August.

I am still recovering from the weekend….have a great Monday…and join me as we stay cool and ….

KEEP SMILING!!

  1. First of all, I have noticed your weight loss, and congratulate you on sticking with your walking routine! That can be tough to get out in heat and humidity and go for long walks! Good for you! You are encouraging me to step it up in our heat and humidity! It certainly can be difficult dressing for the steamy days, but you did it here with great style! I would not have thought of Tencel as a fabric for high heat days, but am quick to run for linen. I’ll have to reconsider the Tencel. I no longer wear shorts either, and use dresses and skirts for those high heat days. Also found some moisture-wicking, extremely light weight pants at LLBean that can stand up to the dog and bought those in different colors. They come in very handy for our walks in the woods! Your lunch looks delicious!

  2. Hi Karen, happy Monday! I am a huge fan of tencel and bamboo! The reason we sleep on bamboo sheets is because they are so “cool.” I like linen too and have worn two linen dresses ai own, a lot this summer!

  3. my walking is limited to before 8a….after that the heat will make me give up too quick. i do notice in the evenings in my neighborhood its a family affair, kids on bikes, littles in strollers, dogs on leashes…its fun to watch the parade!
what i wear kinda depends on where im going in this heat…if i have multiple stops involving loading and unloading the car…its sleeveless and capris all the way…but if i know im going somewhere icy cold and be sitting for awhile…dr appointments or resturaunts, i grab a light sweater, jacket or wrap….and then i will break out the full length pants as well…

  4. It is very obvious that your hard work is paying off, and the walking in the heat needs to be commended. In the heat and humidity I tend to wear a loose skirt or dress to go out, over bottoms with more material touching me. I like the feel of Tencel rather than linen for some reason, and yes to bamboo. Even in the heat, I do still wear jewellery, but maybe more emphasis on earrings than a substantial necklace. Always a couple rings though. That salad is mouthwatering, and I think that is what I will have when I meet a friend for lunch later this week. The ones I make at home are never as fancy as the ones at our little restaurant.

  5. You do look fabulous, happy and cool in this new outfit! I too will have to consider Tencel! I’ve invested in linen in a big way this summer! Our sumner is breaking all records for high temperatures and high humidity this year. I really cannot wait for fall! (Don’t usually say this.). Your posts are a great source of inspiration to me.

  6. I wear cropped pants, and will wear a longer pair of shorts for walking. I find dressing well in summer challenging, as I prefer more body coverage and layers. It gets hot and very humid in summer in Ohio too. For sure, at the price those pants are now, I would get a second pair in a smaller size. They fit your style and look like you would be able to wear them a lot. I can’t get over the benefits I’ve found thorough consistent daily walking, and it sounds like it’s making you healthier too. I just had major foot surgery, necessitating a cast, scooter, physical therapy. I miss those walks already. Can’t wait to get back to them!

  7. I will definitely check out Tencel. I always believed that synthetics were hotter and cotton was the way to go. My problem for the heat is my arms. I have lost some weight and they just look saggy and crepey. It’s the crepey skin that has me so self-conscious. I head back to work in few weeks and it’s still really hot. I have several sleeveless dresses that were my go-tos in the hot weather, but now I feel uncomfortable showing the “old lady” arms. I have been searching for short sleeved cardigans or shrugs to go over them and just haven’t found anything doing online searches. Any suggestions?
I love your new clothing look and your hair!!
    Have a great day!!

  8. Learned something already this morning. You prompted me to do a Google search for Tencel. Business Insider has an informative article comparing Tencel to cotton. Not sure if I’m ready to try it, though.

  9. Flowy, loose, cotton dresses are so comfy – I try to stay at a knee (or just above) length and they can be cutely accessorized depending on what your day demands. Anything binding around the waist is a ‘no go’ for me during these hot, humid months in mid-Texas, so shorts/crops are my absolute last choice.

  10. You look very nice and the colours suit you. Because I perspire in the heat I tend to wear what washes easily, loose fitting, not baggy, and light in colour.

I also like light but bright accessories. Lots of hair spray!!!!

  11. You are looking fabulous. There as definitely been a weight loss. How have you adjusted your eating.

  12. Good afternoon Pamela. For myself I normally run cool so actually appreciate the heat however not a fan of high humidity. For summer clothing though, I lean towards linen and lightweight cotton or their blends but as most places are air conditioned seldom leave home without something to cover my arms. i.e.: A long sleeved but lightweight, short bolero shrug for example whose fabric and minimal design works with just about any style of top/garment. Do love your bracelet! -Brenda-

  13. You look nice.

Today’s forecast where I live: heat, smoke, air quality warnings, rainfall warnings and flash flood warnings. Hmm. Great day to stay inside, wearing whatever I want.

  14. Following a recommended calorie count, but I am about to get even more serious about it and begin to eat a low cholesterol diet! Thank you for the encouragment.

  15. I wear pretty much what you’re wearing when it’s really hot here: cotton capris & a loose cotton top of some sort, less jewelry (except for earrings & rings, which I’m never without) & comfortable sandals if I have to go out (bare feet at home). A/C isn’t common here on the coast except in stores & restaurants but we’re lucky in that our house has a heat pump, thus a/c. I run hot all the time & dislike the heat & direct sun so when it’s REALLY hot I don’t set foot out of the house except for early morning or late evening, & then you’ll find me in jeans & a loose tee or top. For the past couple of weeks we’ve been under both heat & air quality advisories as we’re getting a lot of smoke from the wildfires in the BC interior (& US), so we’ve been staying inside & using the treadmill instead of taking our usual long daily walks. My husband hates it & grumbles a lot but even he sees that while it’s far from ideal, it’s preferable from a health angle. Both of us are pretty healthy & would like to stay that way.
