Warm popovers and cozy coats

warm popovers and cozy coats

Happy Thursday, ladies!  Today I have a perfect fall post with warm popovers and cozy coats.

I realized months ago when I changed my coloring from a cool winter to a vibrant autumn, that all of my heavy coats were black.

The need for a nice warm coat where I live is always risky, but after the great Texas freeze of last February, I would not want to be caught without one.

I wore one of the heavy black coats for days…with a lot layered underneath since we had no power….except a fire in the fireplace.

Also, I like to have a nicer coat than a puffy jacket in case a special winter occasion hits the calendar.

But, I understand that the predictions this year are such that I might not have an opportunity to wear this coat at all….we shall see…last year’s big freeze was obviously a surprise to all of us.

Nevertheless, I am glad it is now in my wardrobe.

There are many beautiful coats of different colors, but this Ralph Lauren Buckle Collar Coat created just for Macy’s hit the mark to me at a doable sale price.

The color (one of five) is called New Vicuna…really camel…and I believed I could do more with it to get mileage out of the purchase.

This is not a real heavy coat, but will work for South Texas.  If I lived in the north, I would probably go with a heavier selection.

Macy’s has a fabulous selection of cozy coats by Ralph Lauren on sale right now.

This is the cozy outfit I will wear the first time temps lower enough for my new coat.

I styled it with:

The Worthington Womens Turtleneck Long Sleeve Pullover Sweater in Tortoise Brown.  I love this sweater…comes in several colors…and is currently on sale for about $14!!

The Women’s Simply Vera Vera Wang Simply Modern Twill Skinny Pants at Kohl.s….another great sales price and very flattering pants.

The multi-colored beaded necklace at Chico’s….my new favorite necklace...the colors are perfect!

My brown leather gloves will go nicely with this coat…and my leather Naturalizer booties….here are the current selections for those.

Now, thinking of colder weather is a great time to think about pumpkin popovers.

I wish I had been a member of Leigh Ann’s family last week when she made these…they look so good and she said they went away quickly!

WARM PUMPKIN SPICE POPOVERS

Warm popovers and cozy coats

PUMPKIN SPICE POPOVER INGREDIENTS:

3 Tbsp. of unsalted butter, melted…plus use extra for greasing the popover baking cups

3 large eggs, best at room temperature

1 cup of milk

1 cup all-purpose flour

1 1/4 tsp. pumpkin pie spice

1/2 tsp salt

(Use a little confectioner’s sugar for dusting the tops)

  1. Heat the oven to 375 degrees. Generously grease six 6-oz. custard cups, or use a popover pan with buttered cups, or even a muffin pan with buttered cups.
  2. In a blender or mixer, combine, melted butter, eggs, milk, flour, spice, and salt until smooth.  Pour around 1/3 cup of the batter into each baking cup.
  3. Bake for 50 minutes, then quickly cut a small slit in the top of each popover to release the steam; bake 10 minutes longer,  Immediately remove the popovers from the cups, loosening with a spatula if necessary. Serve hot…dusted with sugar.

They are said to be very yummy and will keep frozen up until one month.

I am going to try these….maybe this weekend!!

  1. A camel coat is such a timeless classic in this style, it’s beautiful and I do hope you are able to enjoy wearing it this winter. It does look like it is very lightweight, would be a fall coat here in the north, but certainly a great wardrobe addition. I would like to add a long navy coat to my coat wardrobe, but am looking for a specific style, and that always makes it more of a challenge! Definitely wearing my heavy coats, we had snow last weekend already. I do like your sweater, and have several sweaters in that color because I like it so much. The price is pretty amazing on that one. Again, such a great wardrobe basic that I would get a lot of wear from in the fall and winter, and it looks beautiful with your coat. Those popovers would make a fun, light dessert after a heavy dinner (like Thanksgiving!) I donated my popover pan when I moved last time and it has been something I regret. You really get the best results with the dedicated pan. It’s probably something I’m going to pick up to have again because popovers are fun to make, delicious, and kind of showy at dinner!

  2. Now, I want a popover pan! I have never had one. Navy would also be a good coat color to have. I will report back how often I wear this one! It’s chilly this morning.

  3. Am loving this entire ensemble on you, Pamela. As to the coat IMHO a perfect length for you as well. For myself, up to this point I have been avoiding wearing one as due to our climate winter dictates such which is long and drawn out. (I’ve also been just wearing loafers rather than boots.)
The recipe sounds delish, so will definitely try it. Have several sized muffin pans (Texas one being the favourite … ☺…. as nice and large.) -Brenda-

  4. You look so “put together” this morning, not that you don’t every day, but your colors, your coat, sweater, pants, shoes, all coordinate so beautifully. And I love that necklace although I feel it is too big for my petite body. I have bought several bigger necklaces from Chico’s over the years, and rarely wear them because I feel they overtake my small frame. I feel the same about infinity scarves which I cannot wear as a smaller person. The popover recipe certainly looks easy and delicious so I’ll be trying it using my custard cups as I lack a popover pan.

  5. Love your camel coat! My dress up winter coats is white. But I mainly wear either my burgundy or black puffer coats with sweaters underneath on very cold days. Today will be 70 up here! Crazy weather Cold to warm and back again!

  6. I know the weather can be crazy at times. I am excited to now have one coat in my colors! Thanks Paulette!

  7. Being south of the border this month, I’ve yet to wear a coat. 😄 I did wear a duster length warm and heavy cardigan in the plane coming down and have worn it every night as a robe. It won’t be nearly enough once we touch down in Portland Saturday night, but I can shiver for ten minutes getting to and warming up the car! I am super excited that once home it will be Thanksgiving week, and very chilly. Temps overnight have been in the mid-30’s so I will be wearing a coat for sure to head out Sunday and get a jump on all my preparations. I have a royal blue wool coat which is more vibrant than the colors I am aiming for now, but being that it’s a coat and was costly, I will continue to wear it for several more seasons . . .but if I find a lovely cream colored coat that isn’t puffy, I will definitely go for it! Your camel coat is lovely, btw.

  8. I like your coat, and have one in a similar style and color I got from JJill a few years ago. Since I live in northern Ohio, I have both a short and a long puffer coat, but I agree, sometimes you want a dressier option. When I do, I prefer a lighter coat, even living here. Most of the time if I’m dressed up, I’m just running from the car to an event. And a lighter coat is more flattering and glides over whatever I’m wearing. Your coat might not get daily wear, but it’s a classic you will have for many years. I find coats to have some of the lowest cost per wear of items in my wardrobe.

  9. Your coat is a classic for sure & a beautiful color. I bought myself a dress coat at the beginning of 2020 & have only worn it once since COVID arrived, & that curtailed so many activities. It is black as is my heavy coat. I have a leather jacket that is a burgundy/plummy color that is good for weather that is not frigid, & it gets a lot of compliments. I love your necklace & can see why it is a favorite.

  10. Your new coat looks great, am sure you will have many colors to enhance it. Thanks for the popover recipe, will be trying it shortly.
