Spring Refresh: Fashion, Decor and Adjectives

Spring Refresh

Happy Thursday, ladies!  Welcome to a discussion on a Spring Refresh: Fashion, Decor and Adjectives.

Spring is the time of year when most are ready to refresh their lives…at least just a touch.

I have done a spring refresh with my fashion and decor…and today want to deepen our discussion on The Foundational Five Personal Style Building Blocks, (style adjectives).

SPRING REFRESH: FASHION

Spring Refresh

After dreary winter months, I think most of us are ready for a Spring Refresh with our fashion.

One of my goals this spring is to add more green to my wardrobe.  It is a challenge for me though to find the “right” green.

Spring Refresh

You can see my greens here…grass green, sage, moss green, and pistachio.

The outfit I am wearing today comes very close to the grass green.  I purchased this knit top at Talbot’s at the end of the Red Hangar Sale, so it was $16.

The kimono is originally from Marshall’s.  I have recently found some very affordable kimono options at DSW, Tuesday Morning, and TJ Maxx.

The yellow necklace is an oldie but goodie from Soft Surroundings, and these are my new fave a.n.a. high rise skinny jeggings…love the fit!

The pants are my favorite Spring Refresh so far!  I continue to be amazed and pleased by the warm colors I see in-store in spring collections.

Here are additional items I have seen on the market….(I know I have curated green before, but it different shades are in many places so far this year)

SPRING REFRESH: YOUR STYLE ADJECTIVES

Spring Refresh

I do not change my Foundational Five style adjectives from season to season, but the spring refresh is for some of you.

After my first new video,  Develop Personal Style that is Uniquely You,  where I explained the five adjectives, I heard from a few readers.

There were some still struggling with selecting what they want to communicate with their style; and there were some who needed more guidance with interpreting their adjectives.

If you are still deciding what you want your adjectives to be and what you want to tell the world about you with the clothing you wear, do this little exercise…..

Spring Refresh

Put on your favorite outfit…make sure that it is one you love and feel confident wearing.

Spend some time in the mirror looking long and hard at it…WHAT IS IT THAT YOU LOVE ABOUT THAT OUTFIT?

Write it down using adjectives and then see what you have before you. If you only have four…that is fine…

But, note the adjectives which can help you build a wardrobe so that you look this confident every day!

Then, each time you leave the house, ask…does what I am wearing speak these adjectives.

If your answer is yes…and you can smile at yourself in the mirror…then go out with confidence!!

Spring Refresh

Now, for the second group…the ones who need assistance communicating the adjectives you want to say with your clothing.

I have done this before, and it was so much fun.

Either tell me your adjectives in today’s comments or email them to me at over50feeling40@gmail.com.

Then I will put together a slideshow of clothing on the market and show you how I would interpret your adjectives.

It is a fun exercise for both of us!  I will email you and let you know the day I am going to post your personal slideshow!

This is a great way to help others also select their own adjectives.

If you have done this before, and your adjectives have changed…then, please, send me the new ones.

It also helps to know your body type…and color palette (cool or warm) in order to hit what you might like the most.

Always let me know if you have questions….

SPRING REFRESH: HOME DECOR

Spring Refresh

It seems my home always can use a bit of a spring refresh when weather changes.

In the first picture, you are seeing that I completely refresh my front porch.

This year, I added a couple of new water resistant pillows I found at Marshall’s.

Spring Refresh

I love flowers in my house this time of year, but the flowers in our markets have been incredibly expensive.

So, this year, I purchased potted flowers at the nursery.  They are way less expensive, and last longer…I am loving having them in the house.

I am looking for more ways this year to save money and still get the same feeling in my home.  These potted plants are a wonderful option.

My spring refresh is all about JOY…with my personal and home style.

Does anyone else have tips for home decor savings this spring?  We would love to hear them…how is your spring refresh going?

  1. Love it all!! The colors in your outfit and the home decor are so fresh… they just say that spring is here!! I love that kimono and have also found some cute ones at DSW… it’s worth it to check them out! My adjectives haven’t changed, just reviewed them in fact, but I really like the exercise of standing in front of the mirror in a favorite outfit and thinking of adjectives that way. I’m definitely going to do this when I review them again. Colors, Pam…… this is always so weird for me. I’ve mentioned my neutral skin tone and honestly can wear some, not all, colors across the different “seasons” and they look good. I guess since this is the case, I just need to try things on with a critical eye and trust what I’m seeing. Once I decide to let my hair be gray (not happening any time soon), all this will probably change! I try to stick with three best neutrals and 4 or 5 signature colors. But it’s a challenge! Glad you are revisiting the adjectives! I love to hear what others have picked! Last week when I was traveling, I was in a shop that felt like me the minute I walked in. Now my home has had a complete refresh with the things I found and I love just going from room to room looking at it! Also found a decorating book that is just me, so between that and that one shop, I’m really enjoying my home! Refreshes are wonderful!!

  2. Your home refresh sounds wonderful, Karen. Yes! Do this exercise and let me know if you learn anything new!

  3. So much here, I hardly know where to begin! Cindy’s style is so wonderful and often hits my style adjectives in a very different, more southwestern way. What a well-deserved honor to be featured. I think today’s post perfectly highlights what I’ve been noticing about color subtypes. As a vibrant autumn, that green is fine on you. I tried on the same shirt. As a blue autumn, at first glance I thought it would work as it’s green, and turquoise is a great color on me. But it completely washed me out! It’s either too minty, or to too bright, or too light …? The colors are a guide, but nothing beats a critical (though kind to self) eye in a mirror.

  4. I love the green kimono and top you are wearing. And as a “summer” I could wear that color. You hit on all of your adjectives as well. You especially look very joyful! I look forward to your blog everyday. You are my favorite of all the fashion blogs that I read and follow.

  5. What a beautiful way you styled all those gorgeous greens and yellows – love it all & looks great on you!

  6. Good morning Pamela,

I am enjoying following your blog and love your new YouTube videos!

This excercise seems made for me. I am recently retired, tall like you, and an autumn like you though slightly less vibrant and a bit more muted or “ leaf” autumn I think the term is. My adjectives are Comfortable, Unfussy, Elegant or a touch luxurious, artsy or funky, and current. I would love your help interpreting what those might look like! I used to love and still do Eileen Fisher but am looking for a little more artsy and retirement wear for my current life and less costly too!

I’ve shopped some of your shopping links and loved the International market site. I look forward to seeing what you come up with!

    Thanks, Lois

  7. How much fun, Lois! Love your adjectives. I will let you know when I put something together!

  8. Colors can be so tricky…yet it has been a fun treasure hunt to find the best! Thanks Linda!

  9. HI, Pam, I agree with Charlene: you always stick to your palette and look good but today’s outfit hits all your adjectives and then some. You look stunning, springlike, and confident. I’m going to do the mirror test but will have to do two b/c I divide my time between rural (think gardening and yardwork and hiking) with urban. I still walk a lot but my city style is less casual. A horrible day today in the city, so if I can get myself out, I’ve got a couple of bright green pillows to purchase. Not to sound preachy, but I’m trying to donate to Ukraine when I purchase for myself … just a thought.
Congrats for being on Cindy’s list!

  10. Pam, I’m so glad Cindy added your interview to her blog. Wonderful post! You always have so much helpful info to share. You look fabulous and very springy (hope that’s a word). Thank you for your generous offer to help us formulate style adjectives. I’ve been struggling with this; I’ll send you an email. You’re the BEST!! 😊

  11. Pam, love your blog……..such beautiful outfits, so well put together! Green is definitely your color with you great hair. I am one of those who have closet full of clothes but nothing to wear! I am 86, told everyday I will never look my age. I am a winter, solid gray, very short cut.i weigh 130 and still have a good waist line. My best colors are white, pink and green! I strive to look age current, stylish, easy going, and comfortable but we’ll put togather. Now do you have a style for me?

  12. You already have style, Shirley! I hopefully can help you find the best ways to communicate it! I will give you a heads up when you are going to be featured!

  13. Your green top and beautiful kimono are so refreshing and symbolic of Spring’s freshness and new growth! I’m working on my adjectives, but struggling…need to pull out my thesaurus! I have a friend who says I am elegant, but I definitely do not think of myself with that description. But then, some time ago we spent some time discussing what elegance means so perhaps I am to my friend. I think more of myself as comfortable, stylish, interesting or unique. As I said, I’m working on them. In your interesting info on Cindy Hattersley’s blog, which was a nice honor for you, you mentioned purple eye makeup. I also have hazel eyes so I am interested in where you buy this lovely color…Laura Geller?

  14. Hi Celia, I actually use purple mascara by Maybelline. I purchase it at my grocery store! I also use Neutrogenia purple eyeliner and occasionally Bobbi Brown purple eyeshadow. Lately though it is only the mascara and eyeliner. It is amazing what purple does for hazel eyes!

  15. What an honor to be interviewed by Cindy. For all you share with your faithful readers, bringing joy and knowledge particularly, you deserve it. I look forward to discussing adjectives and it will be so much fun to see your interpretation. After returning from a spur of the moment trip, I need a day to recalibrate!

  16. Ooh, what a fun idea – it’s important to re-evaluate our adjectives as we go through life, since they may change through the ups & downs. Yours suit you though!

I’m still deciding on how exactly to pinpoint mine, but it’s currently:
    *Comfy Covered Colourful Chic*

    An explanation:
~ COMFY – Natural fibres, non wrinkle & machine washable is a must!
~ COVERED – Everyone has different modesty levels, but I prefer just to show my forearms, ankles & décolletage (less risk of sunburn!)
~ COLOURFUL – Head-to-toe neutrals may be slimming but they aren’t ‘me’. I’m a Deep Autumn, so I love a fiery orange, deep teal, rich saffron yellow & warm plum purple in particular!
~ CHIC – Fitted but not tight, timeless (rather than flashy) silhouettes, but with some style added by accessories.

Thank you for all that you do, Pamela 🙂 Looking forward to hearing your interpretation!

  17. Oh despite adding line breaks for clarity, it seems like your comment system makes it all one paragraph when I press enter – oops, sorry!
