Fall home decor represents more than adorning a house

Fall home decor

Happy Friday!  Today I want to explain why fall home décor represents more than adorning a house to me.

When I work on my fall home décor early it is a welcomed change ushering in a coziness I love.

Recently, I walked into the local grocery and was encompassed by overwhelming aromas of cinnamon spice.

I actually paused, inhaled deeply, and experienced almost a euphoric moment of peace.

Upon looking around me, I discovered that I had arrived at the same time as a delivery truck dropping off boxes of cinnamon brooms, and they swept in a moment of hopeful expectation for me.

Why?  I pondered this question for a few days and here is what I surmise.

FALL HOME DÉCOR AND VIBRANT LIFE

The grip of a brutal summer continues.  These images represent the dead plants and landscapes we have looked upon since early June.

My backyard began with so much color and hope, but soon the sun and drought won out and I ceased to fight it.  Now it is full of pots of dead plants.

When mornings become cooler, I will deal with that problem.

For now, I can breathe in the aromas of cinnamon and pumpkin spice and slowly begin my fall home décor with all of its vibrant splendor and color not evident outside.

There is something comforting to me about this specific change.

As we age, dealing with change positively is a challenge and daily occurrence.

But when the change is going from excessive heat and dry landscape to vibrant colors, rich aromas, and a cozier home, then count me in.

FALL HOME DÉCOR ON A BUDGET

This year, I am dealing with more change as I combat a desire to bring out the fall home décor with a home in chaos from construction work.

But, as you can see, I have decorated the family room…and Goodwill San Antonio trips assisted with adding a few new touches this year. The candlestick and the ceramic barn are Goodwill finds.  Lately I am into using candlesticks for more than just candles.

It’s a beautiful pumpkin perch!

I was inspired to do a different mantel in the family room with something I saw online and I am pleased with the results.  I am a huge lover of old books and use them in several places all year long.  I love to find vintage readers and stories.  This began with books from my grandmother’s East Texas farm that I held onto just because I loved books.

I appreciate them more and more as the years go on.

FALL HOME DÉCOR AND COZY

As the days shorten and cooler weather arrives, the word “cozy” becomes a personal mantra and gives purpose to my fall home décor.

It seeps into my everyday life from morning to night.  I think this is also a reason why I love lamps and candles…the soft light just says cozy.

In the warmer climate of South Texas, you must be purposeful to create a cozy atmosphere.

Fall home décor becomes almost like staging a movie set just to experience these moments that enrich our home life and entice others to gather inside the space.

Fall home décor is refreshing in its own way…just as the blast of cinnamon brooms brought a moment of peace and hopeful change so does creating that at home.

As I was writing this post, I looked up to see refreshment on the way which is another reason I love the change of seasons…we often receive more rain after a summer of drought.

My goal this weekend is to completely change over the front porch décor.

But when you walk inside that door chaos remains.

I long for the time the construction will come to an end and I can bring fall home décor to the entire house…but for now, every little bit helps.

Because fall home decor is more than just decorating…it is a representation of good changes in the world where I live.

AN EDITORIAL NOTE

Fall home decor

One of the readers suggested I make last week’s SUNDAY MORNINGS AT HOME a regular feature.

I think I will do that for awhile, and this Sunday morning I will reflect on what I am pondering about the loss of courageous women this past week.

There are so many lessons to learn from others.

  1. I really enjoyed reading your take on fall and fall decor. We live in very different climates, and it’s pretty easy to usher in fall with cooperative weather here in Ohio. What comes after is the big challenge! You found some cute things at Goodwill and elsewhere, and it’s good that you are decorating where you can even if some rooms are not quite ready to go, with the construction. By the way, I was catching up on some posts I missed (things with my mom) and noticed your new wood look floor tile. When I moved here that is what I used for my kitchen, dining room and living room and hallways that all flow together. It’s been so easy to care for and looks beautiful. Definitely no regrets! Thank you for your thoughts on fall. It’s a beautiful and enjoyable season here and fortunately lasts for several months. I’m kind of sorry it’s getting dark so early, but I guess more opportunity to light some candles!

    1. Hi Karen! Thanks for the reassurance on the floors. We talked to several friends who also love that choice. And yes…light the candles!

      1. Ok, after your post today, I’m motivated to bring fall into the house now 😊. I second Karen’s comment regarding the wood look tile— love my easy-care floors now, and people keep complimenting my “hard wood”— you’ll enjoy 👍

  2. Right now I’m watching the 96 gun salute for Queen Elizabeth, and listening to such wonderful remarks about her. I know you’ll talk about this Sunday, but your quote from her so coincides with the comments I’m hearing about how she never complained about her constant, daily duties, and always presented herself in such respectable, proper terms.
Now about your fall decor, your pumpkins and old books do create such a cozy vibe. I too keep hanging on to some old books, but have not thought to use them in my limited decor, and surely might try now that you’ve given me that idea. I’m not a pumpkin spice food fan, but do love the cinnamon smells and colorful leaves associated with autumn. I’m thinking a might go put some cinnamon and cloves in water on the stove to give my house that delicious smell now.

  3. Though I hate to see our condo pool close for the season, we have a lovely, long, colorful autumn here in Ohio before the November rains make it dreary. This year we are honoring the season by going on a two week leaf peeping trip to northern Michigan, to include a ride down the Tunnel of Trees, which is along the lake outside one of the towns. I love nature this time of year … it’s finally cool enough that a simple walk does not require a shower and washing my hair. In that vein, I’ve gone almost completely natural in my decor. It’s fun to choose pumpkins, gourds and corn, and to simply toss them after the season.

    1. One of the reasons I love the season is like you I am more motivated to be outside. Looking forward to saying goodbye to this heat!

  4. Thanks Pam, fall is a great time of the year. I like the pumpkin on a candle stick. Many memories of friends, family, football.

  5. Love your idea of including all of the senses in fall decor. The sense of smell and the aromas of cinnamon and nutmeg always conjur up memories of my old home- mom baking pies, preparing baked apples, and pumpkin soup. Such great thoughts!
Visually, just seeing your mini pumpkins sends such a cosy message! Love fall!

    1. I agree, Paulette! Besides decorating, all I have wanted to do lately is cook! Not good at all for someone on a diet!

  6. I see Fall as a season of hope. The hope of having the windows open to air out the house after it has been closed up all summer to keep out the heat & humidity. The hope of being able to spend time cleaning my overgrown patio area & then relaxing with a book & tea-iced or hot depending on the temperature. I love the scents of Fall-the cinnamon, apples, & pumpkin spice. Lately, I have been wanting to make soup. I have seen a few recipes that I want to try, & I’m always ready for a grilled cheese & tomato basil soup. By decorating early, I can look forward to all the other pleasures that come with the season & cooler weather.

  7. Still savoring summer … went in the ocean today. But you can feel the air getting crisper: we had to shut the windows last night as the temp dipped into the 50’s. Love your decorations! I bought a autumn gnome, with an orange hat and a “cosy” sign with fall foliage. Asters and pumpkins soon, and I really want to make pumpkin pancakes Sunday.
