Mother-of-the-Groom Journey: A Texas ranch luncheon

Texas ranch luncheon

Happy last Monday of April, friends!  What a wonderful weekend this was…and today you can join In my Mother-of-the-groom journey at a Texas ranch luncheon!

We are in full wedding swing headed toward the big event at the end of next month, so it was an honor to join family and special friends at a Texas ranch luncheon to honor the bride and groom.

Because you voiced interest in this event, today is a long post from fashion to the Texas ranch luncheon itself.

I hope you enjoy this special day…so saddle up…and let’s get started.

A TEXAS RANCH LUNCHEON: WHAT I WORE

 Texas ranch luncheon

I confess…this Texas ranch luncheon was a tough one to plan for.  I did not know how rustic the setting would be, or what the weather would be like.  The invitation said CASUAL.

I could have gone many directions and changed my mind often.

It turned out that a front blew through the night before and the weather was breezy and cool…actually perfect…and perfect for me to wear this Chico’s cardigan.

So, I selected this washable silk magic dress in salmon that I had purchased at our local Elizabeth’s Boutique.

Though, I could’ve gone much more casual in jeans or a denim skirt, I felt good in this dress and do not regret wearing it.

I could’ve purchased the cardigan in white or a turquoise blue, but I believe I will wear it more in the navy.  I just do not enjoy wearing cool colors any longer….not my best.

The necklace has already been worn often and it is the SOUTHERN LIVING NECKLACE FROM DILLARD’S.

I love these new Jack Rogers Collins Casual Sandals, and I like the way they looked with this outfit.  I will be wearing them often this summer.

However, the setting was more rustic than I originally thought it would be and I did regret not having better shoes on to fight the sticker plants.

Good reason why many wore their boots!

I also want to add how impressed I am with the Jack Rogers shoes overall…the comfort level is excellent and I love the designs.

The happy couple looked their Texas casual best and were ready to have a good time!

So, let’s look at this ranch…..

A TEXAS RANCH LUNCHEON: THE RANCH

Texas ranch luncheon

It has almost been seventy years that I have lived in Texas and had the opportunity to live in all parts of the state.

I firmly believe that each section of the state has its own beauty, and that is the same for the South Texas ranches….so refreshing, lovely, and throughly Texan.

This was one of those afternoons where you just wanted to take the freshly squeezed lemonade and “sit a spell” on the front porch.

Each field was filled with wildflowers and butterflies.

And many of the trees were majestic and probably hundreds of years old….in fact, the eating tables for the Texas ranch luncheon were set under such a tree.

A TEXAS RANCH LUNCHEON: THE CASITAS

Texas ranch luncheon

Two of my grandsons are here welcoming you to one of the casitas on the property.

In case you are not familiar with the term, a casita is a small house or other building on a ranch and common to Texas.

On this beautiful ranch, the casitas were much like log cabins.

These two pictures are just a very small sampling of the perfect Texas/French country decor.

What makes it even more special, is the interior decorator was the father-of-the-bride!

He loves to do interior decorating and loves to shop antiques….and if you saw the casitas you would understand just how good he is with his passion.

My oldest grandson would go into each room and say…I love this, I could live here, it is so comfortable…I love comfortable places.

And is was cozy and comfortable for all of us at the Texas ranch luncheon.

A TEXAS RANCH LUNCHEON: THE MAIN EVENT

Texas ranch luncheon

Of course, the main event was the Texas ranch luncheon itself!

It was a perfect event with sunflowers, and seed packets decorating all of the tables…I think my grandchildren are ready to rush home and become gardeners.

The children loved the sunflower decorated cookies and cupcakes, the fresh lemonade, and playing “washers”…my oldest grandson won and took away all of the MOON PIE prizes!

You might be thinking that there had to be bugs…but there were none…oh an occasional fly…but the others must have gone into town for Fiesta.

A good time was celebrated by all.

I love these opportunities to get the know the bride’s family and friends better…we are so blessed to soon be in a family together.

They are a wonderful family.

One big moment for me was watching my four-year-old grandson become a host.

On his own, he picked wildflowers to give to some of the ladies.

Then he ran and welcomed his uncle and bride-to-be with a cup of fresh lemonade.

So impressive…and he warmed the depths of my heart.

As the mother-of-the-groom, I have done my best to purchase clothing that flows with the majority of my wardrobe and then I know I will wear the outfits again.

Several women wore the very appropriate white cotton blouses, with denim, and beautiful silver jewelry pieces.

But, I did feel confident and comfortable…so I am pleased with this choice.

Now, you are welcome to ask me any questions.  There were a few of you who commented that they wanted all of the details on this event.

I think I covered it, but if not just ask…it was so well done and a lovely lovely way to attend a Texas ranch luncheon.

  1. What a special day! You look spectacular and as the MOG you appropriately chose an outfit that allowed you to shine in that role. Beautiful!

  2. You look awesome. This reminded me of an amusing story. A friend from Midland, Texas, was being transferred here (the Midwest) & was house hunting. Every time her agent suggested “a ranch,” she saw 60 acres, out buildings & work to be done. She’d nix the idea. Finally, when my friend pushed back that she didn’t have horses & didn’t need a lot of land, her agent got it. Not that kind of ranch! My friend still questions how a one-story rambler became known as a ranch. Come to think of it, I do, too.

  3. Thank you for taking us with you!! What a beautiful setting and looked like a nice day!!
I’ve never been to that part of Texas, may have to plan a visit.
    Loved your dress!!

  4. Hi Pamela – Was this a bridal shower or just a lovely luncheon for the families to get to know one another better? The place looks lovley!

  5. Pam, the ranch is just stunning and makes me want to visit south Texas. The girth of that tree is astounding. It looks like a great time, and you are lucky that you are close enough to have events with the bride’s family. One question: what did you actually eat? BTW, you look great — and dresses are cooler and not as snug as blouses and skirts.

  6. What a memorable and joyous day! There’s your word again. You look beautiful. I love the sunflower theme especially the flowers in the galvanized vases. So unique.

  7. Thank you Linda! I love these magic dresses…now own three different colors!

  8. I graduated high school in Midland, TX and a West Texas ranch often includes tumbleweeds, sand, rock, and rattlers! I understand her hesitancy and misunderstanding. But, the West Texas sky is amazing…one year long ago, we actually saw the Aura Borealis out there.

  9. Texas has a different type of beauty all over the state and South Texas for sure has its own. Loved this place.

  10. I think it was just family friends honoring the bride and groom and, of course, providing another way for us to get to know everyone better. Special day.

  11. I told my grandson that if I ever tried my hand at painting that I would want to paint those trees…so many majestic ones. We ate a very traditional picnic meal…fried chicken, pimento cheese sandwiches, a fresh cherry tomato salad with fresh mint, sweet dill pickles, potato salad, fruit, fresh lemonade and ice tea. Then the sunflower cupcakes, brownies, lemon bars, and cookies for dessert. The washable silk is so cool that is one of the reasons I purchased the dresses. I knew I would not get warm in them.

  12. Everything was so cozy and fun and well done. When the grandchildren are commenting on the decorations and how much they love them, then you know you scored!

  13. Tremendous!!! What a wonderful day for everyone to share out at the ranch, and oh, yes, what adorable decor both indoors and out for the party. I love the bride’s choice of a fitted yet casual white dress paired with your son’s smart looking shirt and pants.

  14. Thank you for sharing such a beautiful day with us! Your choice of outfit was just perfect and I love the decor for the lunch and everything else about the ranch. My dad was from Dallas and I remember some happy childhood vacation days spent at my great-aunt’s ranch in Granbury, but I really need to get to South Texas one day. The betrothed couple looks so happy and that’s a great photo of you & your husband with your son. I’m so grateful that you’re taking us along on this special journey!

  15. Glad you enjoy it, Niki. I heard that Grandbury is where you need to go! They have really made it a cute fun little town.

  16. Thank you for sharing this event with us. I love the little houses & am glad you explained the meaning of casita. Being from the Midwest, I wouldn’t have known what they were. They were beautifully decorated. It sounds like everyone had a lovely time. The outfit you chose had you looking your confident best & allowed you to relax & enjoy the festivities. Well done!

  17. Thank you for sharing the lovely day. What a stunning setting and I loved the decor of the casitas. You looked fabulous in that dress and I’m was glad to read that it was comfortable on a hot day. What a find for you. Everything about the upcoming wedding has been so lovely.

  18. Thank you, Kathie. These washable silk dresses are so light and cool…perfect for Texas weather.

  19. I have a question about the fringed ruffle dresses. For some reason I got the idea they were 2 piece dresses but the blue and this coral look like a one piece dress. Which is it? So cute it makes me think I need to drive over to San Antonio.
Another topic. I am a few days behind so just read about your Fiesta outfits. You should wear those tops 2x per week. So cute and cool! Especially once summer really arrives in south Texas. Have you ever thought about getting some orange sandals? They would be so perfect with 2 of those tops and with your pallet you could prob find lots of ways to wear them. Not rust or muted. Color crayon orange! I have some I love and I wear a summer color pallet!

  20. What a lovely looking home and a special family time! Have yet to make it to Texas but have a good friend who grew up in Hondo which I understand is just outside of San Antonio. I hope some day he’ll give us a tour. The decor was so bright and cheerful and very reminiscent of a friend’s son’s wedding. It was in August and that’s when we get to see the beautiful faces of sunflowers up here in the north. A question, are the casitas used as guest houses or do family members have their own spaces?

  21. Such a beautiful place and you look stunning in your chosen outfit for this celebration- all leading up to the big day! As MOG you sparkle! Your grandchildren are adorable and so engaged in this happy occasion. I love this!
    Such happy memories.

  22. Thank you so much for sharing your special family occasion. You are very blessed that you are gaining a lovely daughter-in-law and that you get on so well with her family. Your outfit is so you and I love the colour of the dress, plus the cardigan is a winner. Also I love learning about your part of Texas and maybe I will visit one day.

  23. Pamela, it is late and I want to read this again tomorrow along with all the comments. I just want to say PERFECT, from your blown out hair to your lovely polished toes. You are blessed with your family and your family-to-be!

  24. Yes! Hondo is right by San Antonio …you should plan a trip. I believe these serve for both, Linda, but primarily guest houses.

  25. Hi April…these are one piece dresses designed to flatter any figure…and that is why I call them magic dresses. The washable silk is so refreshing to wear in a warm climate and they are lovely dresses.
I am so glad that I now own three. Drive on over after you check the open times for Elizabeth’s Boutique…these dresses are unique to them and designed by an Italian. Orange sandals…I do not have, but will keep my eyes open!

  26. It was so much fun to see this celebration! I love the casually chic way the hostesses planned the party from the decorations to the wonderful picnic food. It must have put everyone at ease. And that view—wow! It looks like all ages got to enjoy these special moments. You need a scrapbook so you can look back later. Your family picture is beautiful! Definitely frame that one Thanks for sharing!
