New color ideas for black pants
Happy Thursday, friends. Today, I have for you new color ideas for your black pants.
I was recently asked for more ideas for styling black pants and thought one way to look at it was to discuss new color ideas for black pants.
My intention was to go out and about this week and visit more dressing rooms, but the weather had its own idea.
If I was not still in a recovery boot, excessive rain might not have kept me away…but I am still trying to be careful and not hinder the foot recovery.
Since I was asked for ideas specifically with black pants, and to closet dive a little more, I thought this was a great opportunity to do just that.
These are the pants I am wearing often lately because of the recovery boot…. the black Talbot’s T by Talbots Ribbed High Waist Flare Leggings.
NEW COLOR IDEAS FOR BLACK PANTS: COLOR COMBO #1
I am certain the majority of you know this, but for others who might not, BLACK is a neutral which means it goes with ANYTHING.
However, most of us get in ruts of wearing the same things over and over again with our black pants.
I wear black pants often, but need to make sure that for my best look, I have my autumn color palettes on top.
Our first combo in the new color ideas for black pants is PURPLE AND OLIVE (MILITARY) GREEN.
I have liked wearing purple and green together for a long time…even before my colors were officially determined to be a Vibrant Autumn.
Both colors are in my palette, and when I look for color ideas for black pants, I do my best to stay in that best palette for my most confident style.
These pieces from my closet are go-to pieces…a Talbot’s blazer and a Chico’s sweater…past purchases.
I accessorized this look with bronze flats by Clarke, also a past purchase that I actually found on a DSW clearance rack.
I love these shoes…and they look amazing with a black pant.
However, here are some fun inspiration looks that are takes on this color idea for black pants, Including bronze shoes:
Oh yes, the necklace I am wearing is from a boutique in San Antonio called NICHE.
NEW COLOR IDEAS FOR BLACK PANTS: COLOR COMBO # 2
Here is the trench coat I introduced to you on Tuesday: Style Tips for a Long Trench Coat.
I wore it every day this week, and one day inspired this look as one of the color ideas for black pants.
I paired the black pants with the oregano color of the St.John’s Bay Women’s V Neck Long Sleeve T Shirt.
This shirt is by far one of the top sellers on this blog…it comes in 22 colors…and I think I own maybe six of them.
It is a wonderful tee shirt and until January 28 if you use the code SETGOALS, you can order this shirt at JCP for $7.18! For that price, get more than one color.
I love this coat and outfit underneath paired with the colorful wool scarf I found in a boutique in Skagway, Alaska last summer. The scarf is magnificent.
The boutique owner’s daughter is the artist who created the scarf.
Black pants always provide a way to style “out-front” color combinations!
NEW COLOR IDEAS FOR BLACK PANTS: COLOR COMBO #3
Denim combined with black is a fabulous way to discover new color ideas for black pants.
I have liked denim tops and jackets with black pants for a very long time.
Today, I am wearing a Chico’s denim top with fraying on the line of bottoms which gives a nice unique style to the look, and a cream colored Talbot’s field cotton jacket.
Here are denim blouses currently on the market and a pretty jacket :
NEW COLOR IDEAS FOR BLACK PANTS: COLOR COMBO #4
Do not be afraid to pair any shade of brown with black. In fact, dark browns and black make for very chic color ideas with black pants.
This brown is what I would call Cinnamon…kind of a light brown and red mix. It is an older linen jacket from JJILL, with a striped brown and cream top from LOFT.
As I have written, stripes will be bigger than ever this year, and I do love to pair a floral scarf with stripes.
Here are some new arrivals in striped tops and any would go with black pants:
Just remember, with black pants anything goes…blue, brown, green, cinnamon, rust, red…you name it, it goes. Black pants can be one of our favorite staples to style just because of this.
What are some of the new ways you are wearing black pants? Any thoughts on new color ideas for black pants…I hope I have you thinking of new ways you can style your own.

I was encouraged to explain more about my SHOPPING LINKS page and how to use it. (In fact I just added a few new brands to the list)
I am an affiliate for many different brands and when you click on those brands and shop, then I receive a small commission.
This is such an important income for me and my family.
I have tried to include the brands most shopped by this audience, but sometimes I miss one of your favorites.
If you will tell me what you are shopping, then I can tell you if I am affiliate for them and give you that link…if it is not already on the page.
And remember to send your recipes, home decor or street style from where you are with pictures to over50feeling40@gmail.com.
Send to email and do not try to put in comments! YOU are the best.
I styled the denim shirt outfit with this bracelet. It was a GOODWILL SA find. And one of my favorites!
Your purple with oregano shades look fabulous with your black pants! I mainly wear black jeans in either kick flare or straight slim (my black dressy pants rarely get a nod anymore as even the restaurants we go to have become really really casual). Given that I like your denim shirt with ivory jacket and your cinnamon-striped tee with jacket.
They appeal to me. I usually go with light shades with my black jeans- ivory
/ light tan /taupe/greige or palerblues.

Good morning. I really enjoyed looking at all the green jackets. I love greens! I no longer wear black and will never reintroduce in my wardrobe. Instead I wear the darkest brown, deep olive, etc. in pants or colored jeans in lieu of them. You do a good job pairing them with your autumn colors. That bracelet that you found at Goodwill is so much fun!
As I replace my wardrobe, I went ahead and added black jeans. I did this even though black is not in my Blue Autumn palette, for the reasons you said. Since I’m still losing weight, I’m trying to dress inexpensively, and black is universal, plus seems to make less costly clothing look a little nicer. One of my fave combos is olive and black, and I’ve always just adored eggplant and olive. Black pants are the equivalent of the LBD in my wardrobe. I enjoyed today’s post!
Hoping to give some of you new ideas! Thanks Paulette!
Thanks Deborah. For me it has worked well to keep a few black options on the bottom. I can still get my best colors near my face. I love this bracelet…which cost $2.50 and I wear it often.
Glad you enjoyed, Linda. I think black pants are also my LBD!
Black and navy are staples in my wardrobe, and for good reason, as you point out. Black especially, goes with everything. I enjoy wearing black, and probably my favorite with it is cobalt. For women who feel that black “ages” them, black bottoms can be the way to combat that. For me, I wear black tops too and never tire of it! I like the scarf you’re wearing with the trench… really brightens it up! Scarves work wonders for so many applications!
I love the tops on you and understand the pairing with black pants. But, I guess my question is, while you can wear them with black pants, wouldn’t they look better with colors that go with them? I’m thinking I could wear a black or navy top (in my palette) with camel or dark brown trousers, but so far, I haven’t done this because I think my choices will be limited.
I love scarves and this one just makes me smile. Thanks for sharing, Karen.
Maeve, I was specifically asked by one of the followers for options with black pants. I explained that in the post…I did this by request. I have worn these often in recovery.,,they are comfy and always look nice. My personal go-to pants are not black.
Pam, you look beautiful in all of this. Great inspiration! I’m starting to love camel with black. Very classy. Your cinnamon look is my favorite.
Camel and black are very chic together. Especially for those ladies in a winter palette! Thanks Marcia
You have put together several pretty outfits with your black pants. I also wear black pants often especially when getting more dressy. I’ve found that a good indicator of what colors look good together is to look at my scarves. If you like the colors of the scarf, then those same colors look good above the black pants. You can also look at a color wheel and the location of different colors relative to each other.
Scarves are great help to see colors together…I also love to do that…
I agree that black pants can be worn with pretty much any color. My absolute favorite is to pair a black bottom with cream on top, as a blouse + cardigan or jacket. In yesterday’s video there was a woman wearing a white trench piped in black, and oh, it was so crisp and sharp looking! Generally I veer towards softer, pastel blouses and sweaters. A black pant helps me to ground those outfits, and keeps from looking too summery. I also love purple + green, which in my colors comes as a heathered lilac + old Junior Girl Scout uniform green.
Thanks for sharing your ideas, Connie!
I’ve noticed and like the combinations of lime green and blue in window displays at our local mall. I also really like green and purple. I hope there will be more closet diving in the future. Thanks for today’s post.
I am happy to closet dive for you, Judy. I will make it as interesting as possible!
Hi Pamela, I love your pants, does the waist pull on or button? I need 2 petite. 🥰
Sandra Winfield
Hi Sandra, these pants are very comfy with no button. Sadly though it looks like petites have sold out. If I see they have restocked that pant, I will let you know.
I really enjoy your closet dives! Even though we have different color palettes, understanding why you chose a color is very informative. With my white and silver streaked hair and fair complexion, my color palette is cool tones. I have on a light grey top with a blue green print on it with black wash trouser jeans. Black Skechers sneakers because we just took both the cat and dog to the vet. I have a hair appointment in an hour so casual clothes that are functional for their hair and mine on my clothes.
Thanks Sydney. I do this just to give everyone inspiration and ideas for clothing in their own palettes.
