Personal Style: Who Is This Woman?
Happy Tuesday, ladies! Let’s play another round of PERSONAL STYLE: WHO IS THIS WOMAN?
These exercises are designed to help us ponder what clothing says about the woman wearing it.
Specifically, we have been looking at the personal style adjectives which might match the outfit.
However, this audience went further and began to create a woman and her lifestyle based on the selection of the feature outfit.
So, let’s look closer at this fashion display I found a couple of months back in Dillard’s.
PERSONAL STYLE: WHO IS THIS WOMAN? THE LOOK
When I first saw the fashion display in Dillard’s , I thought…”What a cute way to cover up a swimsuit.”
Why I am sure it could be worn for that, it is actually a summer skirt to wear out.
This is the ANTONIO MELAN Ix M.G. Style Lyons Printed Faux Wrap Asymmetric Skirt.
My personal style adjectives for this woman would be:
Fashionable
Fun-loving
Relaxed
Alive
Approachable
I know the adjective, “alive” is a new one. But I have grown to really like it.
It is another way to say active and engaged.
Here is what the skirt might look like for going out to dinner.
Here is the more relaxed version of a handbag to go with the skirt.
It is the ANTONIO MELANI x M.G. Style Pearl Sands Crochet Slouchy Tote.
Here is the skirt styled online, but I actually believe that any size woman could wear this skirt…except maybe petites.
So, it is your turn…WHO IS THIS WOMAN? Tell us about her and her style adjectives.
Some of you weave such lovely tales of the wearer that I cannot wait for the stories you create.
The main personal style lesson is that our clothing tells others about us and send messages before we ever speak a word.
So, it pays to ponder…what are the messages we send with our clothing selections.
Let us know what you think…and I hope to see you tomorrow….
KEEP SMILING!

This is Marion the Librarian. By day she wears more tailored classic clothes but adds bright colors to show her style of fun, joyful, imaginative, polished, and confident. But today she is going to a pool party and broke out this “wow” outfit. It shows how to express your style for different occasions.
Sleek. Contemporary. Trendy. Confident. Alive. (Yes, I am snitching your word! Love it.)
This gal is a world traveler. She was so happy to find this print in green and off white. She is very savvy. She packed this as a cover-up for a modest one piece bathing suit knowing that by adding a fitted scoop tank top she could bring it into evening wear. Her hair is worn up, her earrings and simple bracelet match the green, her dressy sandals are skin toned, and she ditched the slouchy bag for a straw clutch. Perfect for a surprise invitation to a cocktail cruise on a yacht on Lake Lugano on the Swiss/ Italian border.
(I know. Such a fantasy. I was once on a tourist boat going to a restaurant for risotto on Lake Lugano. No one was dressed like this! Excuse me while I dream on. )
Thanks for starting this off today, Marcia…Marion the Librarian made me smile.
I love dreaming on…take as long as you want. The story caught me.
Confident, artistic, outgoing, fashionable, and nature loving. She loves to garden and has chosen this green and white palette. She isn’t afraid to expose her arms because she exercises regularly and looks great. She is going to an outdoor patio party with friends and will enjoy chatting and will have a mocktail.
Active, natural, traveler, feminine, relaxed. Ahhh, I see we were somewhat similar today, but I saw a lot more of the earthy, global, 70s vibe about her. I love your adjective “alive” … it reminds me of my own “aware.” Hmmm, where is she going? Our heroine today is leaning full on into natural, and wearing her wooden bangles and horn earrings she bought in a little straw market in the Bahamas. Summer is short where she lives, so she will put some sunscreen on those shoulders and beg a ride with a friend who has a convertible. They will head to one of those small towns that has gentrified, so they can get a flat white with sugar free caramel syrup and wander. So many of the shops have their doors propped open today. She’s lured into the bookstore to pick up a light summer read.
Oh yes, Mary…I see this woman. Thanks!
Of course…she is lured into that bookstore! I am really liking this new adjective “alive”, and need to consider ways we communicate that with our style.
You mention all could wear this but could you teach me about big prints.. (in a future blog post?) whether on the top or bottom .. to not add additional weight. I am your size and build (and foot issues). I love color and prints. I love this outfit but doubt I could pull it off. I jokingly say my style objectives tend to be .. quiet, shy, presentable but not attention seeking. 🤪😂
Thanks for teaching me where I feel clueless!
Hi Lisa, I do know curvier women who would wear this and love it. I try my best to follow those slimming rules and though I am a “live out loud” confident woman, I would not wear this for the same reason I do not currently tuck in shirts…I would not feel confident in it. But, for those women who would wear it no matter their size or age, I want them to see the different adjectives it communicates so they can assess that as part of their decisions to wear this particular outfit. I admire women who have more body positivity than I do…I wish I could go there, but I just haven’t been able to do that. My inactivity due to the surgeries and now the rib is not my body friend right now, and I am looking forward to turning it around.
Ursula has traveled to Costa Rica on a grant to study the sociological effects of tourism in a comparative study between the much-visited Pacific coast towns, and the relatively non-tourist enclaves of the northeastern Atlantic. She is a professor on leave for this purpose, traveling with a handful of post-graduates. Typically, she dresses in a classic, tailored, but approachable style, ah, but there is also the lingering bohemian girl she once was: adventurous, bold, fearless. The majority of her clothing for this six week study will consist of tropical weight neutral pieces she can mix, match, wash and hang to dry. She will need some resort chic wear, however, to ‘blend in’ around the vacationers they plan to see in the hotspots. This lovely skirt and tank will be perfect. Yes, she’s a good fifteen years older than her students, but she can still pull off a look like this. She can’t wait!
I am so excited to meet Ursula!
Sloan has a business trip coming up on Maui soon. She has plenty of coastal neutrals in linen and even cotton gauze. However, she wants to be able to put down her long dark wavy hair and show off her tall slender body in something bright but still comfortable. Her adjectives are, contemporary, comfortable, coastal, fun, independent and confident. She will relax after hours on the hotel patio in her new bold a little boho outfit. She will wear the more halter style white top with the bold green nature print skirt, natural sandals, wear her dangly jade earrings and carry a small straw clutch. This will all accent her rich darker complexion and broad smile. She is ready to have a relaxing but fun evening. She will turn heads as she strolls by.
Like your adjectives, Sydney. They seem to fit Sloan well
Terese wears this to a little French bistro for dinner on the patio with her husband. Its date night! She is confident, feminine , active, sophisticated and fun loving, She is also tall and tan. She had brought along a cashmere shawl in hibiscus pink to toss on her shoulders when the evening cools.
I am really enjoying the fact that the women now have names! This is a great scene you described and good be any age of woman. Thanks Kathie
I love all these women the community has created today, especially Ursula, the professor. I worked with researchers at a large state university for almost 25 years and Connie totally nailed the vibe of a female researcher who is not lost in her lab coats. I see the woman wearing these pieces as lively (my version of “alive,”) current, confident, and versatile (fits in anywhere,) with a casual elegance. She could dress this gorgeous skirt up or down and wear it in a variety of settings, because she has confidence and an interesting life. I would consider purchasing this skirt if not for the length. Since your fall I am even more mindful of my own “frequent faller” tendencies, and I feel like fabric around my ankles could be a tripping hazard. I would also want to wear sandals with this outfit, and couldn’t. Thanks for allowing us to live vicariously through posts like this!
It is fun to live vicariously through some of these outfits and I almost want to write novels around these women!
My opinion about our Lady of the day. I believe she is under 55 and is confident!
Her outfit shows she likes stylish trendy clothes. Her accessories were tasteful and perhaps she is attending a lunch in an upscale restaurant.
Thanks for joining in, Audrey!
Can we just go back to “would you wear it?”
It was more interesting and had so many participants with great ideas…
Hi Emma, sadly a few would get too nasty and condescending about some of the displays and they ruined it for everyone else. If they had kept their comments constructive, we would still be doing it. Sad.
