2024 Fashion Trends: Stripes
Happy June Saturday, everyone! We are continuing a weekly discussion and today it is 2024 Fashion Trends: Stripes!
Of course, we know that stripes are always around for women’s fashion.
However, this year they are front and center in the 2024 Fashion Trends with stripes in every direction and in every color.
In fact, just about every retailer has so many versions of stripes for you to shop and consider.
I would love to hear your answers to this question…Why do you believe we are so attracted to stripes?
Are they fun or classic or both?
For those who love them….let’s dive a little deeper in 2024 fashion trends with stripes.
2024 FASHION TRENDS: STRIPES
ABOVE: KNIT V-NECK TANK
Traditionally, we see stripes in the popular horizontal black & white.
But, this year…you can find colors of stripes for all of the different color palettes.
I decided for today, to compile a slideshow of more affordable options for wearing stripes…and I found so many. Here is a snippet of what I discovered:

Then here is what I found at your favorite retailers: (Several of these are super fun and reasonably priced)

Love. Love, love stripes!! As you said, Pam, classic and fun. Two of my style adjectives. A few months ago, I tried on that J Jill green blazer above. It is lovely. I didn’t buy it, but now you are tempting me again. 😁
Oh I do love stripes! Yes I wear tees that are striped 3/4 sleeve and own one linen top that is striped. They wake me up I feel! I feel good! And when I see a woman wearing striped shirts, blouses or tees I notice her, right off.
They exude cheerfulness I think!
I picked it up in a flash sale for $21!! Make sure you sign up for JJill email so you get notice of the flash sales. The green is lovely!
I agree, Paulette! They are joyful! Thanks for the observation.
Happy Saturday, Pam. I picked up the elbow-sleeved top from Talbots that is in your slide deck, and it is a gorgeous top. It’s impossible to gauge the weight of an item just by looking at it. This one is a mid-weight one — maybe too sturdy for Texas but great for those of us in New England. I’m going to have to go look at your J.Jill recommendations.
Thanks Maeve! It is so helpful when you share information!
My closet is so filled with stripes that every time I add one more I chuckle, did it again! Fun and classic, as you say, and make me feel spirited, vibrant and fresh. I’ve paired navy/white tunic over lime-green crops; black/white stripes year round with every pant;; and colorful striped tees under jean jackets. Striped camisoles in dressy fabrics are elegant. Recently purchased Chico’s T-shirt dress with B/W horizontal stripes in UPF sun-protective fabric. Pam, please feature more T-shirt dresses, especially midi. They are flattering, generally forgiving, travel well, and unbelievably comfy.
I especially like the look of stripes in the spring and summer. They feel light-hearted. My most used item is a little navy and white striped crossbody bag which I use for Farmer’s Market days 🥕 (today!) and picnic concerts. I would love to find a cute new swimsuit with stripes for this summer.
I love stripes and used to wear them a lot. I agree that they are cheerful and fresh and also classic. I have only a few striped tops now as its hard to find them in warm colors. I like striped tops where the stripes are a mix of thick and thinner like the one you are wearing in the first photo. Most of the ones I see are primarily white, usually with black or blue. I’m happy with an orange top with a thin white stripe from Talbot’s early this season, but white with an orange stripe isn’t good on me. I tried the “autumn” stripes from Kettlewell Colours but they are a bit too high contrast for me. I tend to only wear them under a jacket or sweater. I’m always attracted to stripes.
I just bought 5 tees from Kohls from your slide! They are $7.99! I have somehow put tiny holes in some of my thin tees right over the button closure on my jeans and shorts! How do I prevent this on my favorite tees? I really need thin tees as it is 90 degrees today!
I like stripes, fun and classic. Interesting that knits have horizontal stripes and cotton, linen material blouses have vertical stripes. I have both styles. I only buy the narrow stripes
I thought I had many striped clothes because I like them more than plain colours , checks or florals . However I have just checked my wardrobe and I only have 1 jacket , 1 overshirt , 1 blouse and one scarf which are striped . I seem to vary things by colour and texture only – unexpected !
I will do that for you, Char! I do not wear them, but I love shopping for this audience.
Will keep my eyes open for one, Connie!
The one I am wearing in the first photo, Kathie was originally found at Marshall’s. When I see them in my colors, I snatch them up.
Glad you found something you liked, Sydney. I would take 90 degrees as a cooler option where I am.
Thanks Audrey…I also only wear the thin stripes. I like the look of the wider ones, just not on me.
Glad you checked…pull out what you have!
Well, I couldn’t believe the outfit you greeted us with this morning! I am wearing almost the exact same one to take the train to Ct today to visit my daughter for a week. I have on the Jjill brown jacket, a Kettlewell creme and bronze stripe Kettlewell top, and Jjill stone jeans. We are Autumn twins! That being said, as a natural classic, I have about 10+ striped tops (dare I count them) in my closet. I like the boat neck horizontal mariner style. I stay away from verticals. I recently found a picture of me on the day I moved to NYC in 1974, so the style is not new to me. It was the classic navy stripe, but I have added many Kettlewell pieces in my colors in the last 5 years. I love them on their own, but particularly under a jacket or cardigan. I recently suggested to an acquaintance to try one when in a boutique. She shied away, saying she would be too busty. It was adorable and she wears it regularly. I believe it is all about the width and placement of the stripes. Since I wear very few patterned tops, the Breton is truly part of my style personality. Now if I could find checked blouses in deep Autumn colors, I would be over the moon. Sorry if this posted twice.
I love being Autumn twins with you. This JJILL jacket from last year is a good one. For me the design is so important. If the striped top is too boxy then it doesn’t work…it has to have some form to it. Enjoy your time with your daughter, Deborah.
I love stripes. I think they are both classic & fun. I tend to think of horizontal stripes for tees & sweaters & vertical for blouses. Perhaps the vertical is a nod to men’s wear from back in the day when suits were the rule of the day. The blouse with the diagonal stripes from Chico’s is a fresh take on a traditional pattern. I really liked it.
When working I stayed away from stripes, feeling mostly they were a little too informal. I find that I am still not on board with most of them. For some reason, I tend to tire of the look quickly on me. However, I do like the look on many others. I also tend to prefer vertical to horizontal stripes. You posted lots of nice options, Pam. Thank you.
That is in Chico’s no iron collection and they really are no iron with comfort. Thanks Becky.
You are welcome, Mary. Thank you for being here.
To Sydney H……I also had trouble with getting holes in my shirts around the waist area. A solution is the Infinity Belt. You can get it on Amazon. It is a no-show elastic belt that gives you a smooth line and covers the metal closing on jeans and pants that is causing the holes. Works great! Hope you like it.
Thanks for helping out, Marcia!
I like stripes! Especially a good Breton top. I think of Brigitte Bardot, Jean Seberg in Breathless, Charlotte Gainsbourg…a nod to the French and on to the nearest cafe for a daydream kind of day.
😊
I’m late to the party because I ran a wedding for over 400 today, but as a long-time member of Team Stripes I wanted to comment in support of this print, one of the few I still wear. Like Pam and DeborahLM, I have an identical outfit, and just wore it two weeks ago for a meeting when we were having some cool, rainy weather. I do try to restrict any new purchases of Breton tees to colors in my autumn palette, as black or navy and white aren’t flattering on me, but I’ll never completely give up my classic navy/white stripes. I feel like Breton stripe tees are classic and timeless, two of my style adjectives. I don’t wear vertical stripes because I’ve always been tall, so I don’t need to be further elongated. I’ve been seeing a lot of vertical stripes in matching button-down shirts and shorts in the DFW area, but I prefer to only wear one striped piece at a time. I saw a few affordable options in the slide show I’ll be checking out, and I really enjoyed my fellow readers comments today. I’m rarely “on trend,” but it’s fun for something I already love to be in style! Thanks to Pamela for finding options at all price points – I’m buying a LOT of Old Navy this summer thanks to your posts.
