VIVAIA POINTED-TOE MARY JANE FLATS

Happy Saturday, ladies!  Time for another focus on one of the 2024 Fashion Trends: Mary Janes.

For anyone new to the blog, on Saturdays (since January) I feature 2024 fashion trends, so that you understand what is being featured in stores and online.

Today’s 2024 fashion trend does evoke some emotion and nostalgia…Mary Janes and saddle shoes take me back years.

The re-emergence of Mary Janes began last year, and continues through this year.

So let’s look over a blast from the past and discuss 2024 Fashion Trends: Mary Janes.

2024 FASHION TRENDS: MARY JANES

MACY’S WOMEN’S LORALI ROUND TOE ADJUSTABLE STRAP CASUAL FLATS

Because Mary Janes are in the 2024 Fashion Trends, we find them in all types of styles and colors…some are super casual and some are super dressy.

And with thin and thick straps…round and pointed toes.

Many women who like Mary Janes are also fans of ballet flats.

For Mary Jane walking shoes, consider EASY SPIRIT. I am a big fan of Easy Spirit walking shoes.

Sadly, I personally am know longer able to wear ballet flats since my two foot reconstruction surgeries…but I do love the style of both shoes.

I stopped wearing a Mary Jane style in my 50s because I did not want to break up a long, lean leg line with a strap….learned that from Stacy & Clinton!

There are some really fun versions of the Mary Janes currently on the market, and I captured a few in this slideshow:

Do any of you wear and love Mary Janes?  Please share if you do……

  1. Yes and I love them. I, too, have had surgery on both feet and Vionic is a ‘go to’ brand for me. I purchased my Mary Jane’s in the spring and have enjoyed upping my style barometer with just the shoes. Never heard/thought about breaking the clean leg line but makes all the sense in the world! I love your blog, it is my first read in the morning! Thank you for your thoughtful guidance!

  2. I’m not a mary jane fan….mainly because I wear a 9.5 or 10 depending and my feet already look long I don’t need a shoe to make them look longer. I’m ok with a simple ballet flat but that strap across the top NOPE!

  3. I love my ballet flats, but I am with you, Stacy, and Clinton on breaking the leg line. I do enjoy seeing them on women who dress more femininely than I. Tending towards more of a tomboy look, I lean towards wingtips, brogues, etc. Now that Ralph Lauren put our Olympic contenders in white bucks for their uniforms, I am hoping for a resurgence of them. (I am also proud to share that they were made in my hometown of Lewiston, Maine!)

  4. I like Mary Janes and always have. I
LOVE #2 in the sideshow! I find Mary Janes a little hard to style. With all the different pants and skirt lengths now, it’s confusing. Ideas would be appreciated. Happy weekend!

  5. Thanks Marcia…I have seen them with all lengths of skirts, with cropped wide leg pants, even with knee length skorts that were cute.

  6. Hi Pam,
Yep, I bought a pair of patent leather, navy blue, double strap Mary Janes this spring. I saw Beth Djalali’s daughter-in-law sporting them several times on her blog. I loved the look. The DIL frequently showed them worn with cropped pants or jeans. Normally, I would think of Mary Janes as a style for little girls. But, I love the way they draw attention to the ankles with cropped pants. To me they look very cool and not at all childish. I am a size 6, just a smidge under 5’4″, and a young-looking nearly 70. My legs are very slender and I consider them to be my best feature. I agree that any shoe with a strap across the instep does break the leg line, but when I look in the mirror I do not feel that my Mary Janes are doing my legs a disservice. Yep, my legs probably do look longer in cropped pants if I wear a neutral, pointed toe shoe with no strap, but I don’t feel that my goal always needs to be making my legs look their longest! If I were really terribly concerned about that, I would not be wearing cropped pants at all! My legs do look their longest in full length pants with a heeled shoe. However, my legs are pretty long in proportion to my rather short height and I do not believe that we must always dress to look like the tallest version of ourselves. I will say that I don’t care for my Mary Janes with my skirts or dresses. They come off as too childish to me.

Don’t shoot me! I will say that there are women who probably cannot pull off Mary Janes. I think they look best on someone who has slender legs and ankles. They do bring the focus down to the lower legs and ankles. If that area is not ones best, then I would suggest steering clear. There are styles I steer clear of. For instance, I will not wear skirts or pants with a paper bag waist. My “fluff” is around my middle. I do not need to put extra bulk there. I think all of us need to know our body shape and how to best dress it. We need to know what we want to show off and what we want to “disguise”. I think I have finally figured it out for myself after many years of some trial and error, ha, ha.

  7. You know that fashion dictum that if you have worn the trend in a previous decade, skip it the second time around? Well I wore Mary Jane’s when I was about six so I won’t be revisiting them.

  8. I haven’t thought about wearing Mary Janes in quite a while. Not sure about them though, even if I would wear them. I would have to try some on.
I wanted to let you know I ordered the cleanser and a moisturizer from Brian. I’m looking forward to trying his products. I have sensitive skin and I can’t seem to find anything that doesn’t cause redness or breakouts.

  9. Good thoughts, Kathy. My body shape is the reason I try to look longer and leaner…it is really only in the summer that I were the cropped pants. So that is why I have avoided Mary Janes…but the style is super cute.

  10. Let me know what you think, Paula and how it works out for you. Brian is so good to work with…you can always tell him if there is a special concern.

  11. Mary Janes just make me smile even if I do not wear them…I think they are a happy shoe!

  12. I have a so-so feeling about Mary Janes. Some, like those with the pointed toe, look very feminine & attractive, but others not so much. With my particular foot problems, I don’t believe that I would be able to wear them. I would definitely need to try them on to how they looked & more importantly, how they felt.

  13. I’m not comfortable in flats of any kind. I need a wide toe boot and soft thick insoles. Fortunately, I have a super casual life and slip in Skechers, Easy Spirit Denise Austin sneakers and Brooks Ghost Max run/ walk sneakers are my go to daily. I have a nice pair of silver Easy Spirit sandals I could wear for a dress up casual lunch or dinner out. It is subjective, but they just look very uncomfortable to my eye on my feet. And they are uncomfortable. At 79, I still have very slim legs and ankles. My fluff is in my middle and I can hide it. My square toes, I can’t cram into pointed toes. It is a personal choice.

  14. I believe I have only owned one pair of Mary Janes. I do not wear them now. Today there are a few attractive ones, but usually my budget turns me to another style with more times to wear for the $.

  15. For myself the pair of Mary Janes that I do own are several years old and though are suede still look like new because I seldom wear them as more for cooler weather, have an almond shape toe so look best with ankle or full length bottoms plus are a nuisance to buckle. Also considering cost per wear; I prefer just a regular slip on shoe and/or similar to a pair I also own that has a ‘low cut vamp’ that includes two thin buckled straps across that don’t require adjusting (as not across the instep but adopt the element of a Mary Jane), are slightly squared toed and can be worn with various styles in garments. With all that said; I say ‘wear what you love and what works personally for you’.

  16. Late to the shoe party, but still wanted to weigh in on Mary Janes. “Classic” is one of my primary style descriptors, and I feel like this style qualifies as classic. I loved the tan Vionic Alameda style and the ivory Sam Edelman’s you included in today’s selections. However, I don’t wear them for the same reason Sharon articulated – that strap cutting across the top of my size 9 or 9.5 feet isn’t a look that I feel is flattering. I love seeing all the cute styles here, and envy those of you who can comfortably wear this style. When I could still wear a heel I had some chunky MJs that I loved, but the elevation of the heel shortened the overall length of my foot, somehow. It will be interesting to see if this trend is short-lived or if they are making a long-term comeback.
