style tips

Happy Friday, ladies!  It has been such a fun week here, so let’s keep it going with Style Tips for Spring Outfits.

During these weekly posts, Style Tips for Spring Outfits, YOU become the professional stylist and offer you best advice about the featured fashion display.

I ask that if the display is not something you personally would wear that you style the look for someone else…and even suggest where she might wear it.

The display today has great potential for you…all the budding professional stylists in this audience.

As you look at the display, consider if you would keep the pieces together or style them with different pieces?

Would you wear flats, sandals, sneakers, kitten heels, etc.   What would any other accessories look like…and where might you wear the outfit you style?

To begin…let’s look over the display and where I found it.

STYLE TIPS FOR SPRING OUTFITS: THE FEATURE DISPLAY

style tips

I have been a fan of designer Donna Karan for a long time, and often walk through the DKNY department at Dillard’s.

That is where I found today’s feature display…and I do believe it has potential…with a few style tips and tweaks.

style tips

The top is the Donna Karan DKNY by Donna Karan Short Pleated Puffed Elbow Sleeve V-Neck Knit Top.

It comes in 8 colors and the display color is called Blue Belle.

The skirt is popular online, and it is the Donna Karan DKNY by Donna Karan Chiffon Pleated Pull-On A-Line Midi Skirt.

It only comes in black.

Again, be thoughtful and creative about the display…what would you do to improve the look.  What are your best style tips?

This is the rest of the display.

In case you like what you see in the blouse, it is the DKNY by Donna Karan Abstract Printed Chiffon Point Collar Long Sleeve Button Down Top.

You can also tell us your style tips for this top as well if you want to have extra fun with it.

style tips

You might want to style either look with one of these beautiful Donna Karan Handbags that come in several colors.

This is the Amagansett Shoulder Bag.

Remember, this is not about would YOU wear it or even would YOU buy it.  It is a style tips exercise….pretend we are in an online fashion class.

  1. Good morning! Reference yesterday’s post about color analysis: I had my color done back in the 80s and still have the little handout booklet. After reading your posts on your own analysis, I queried Color Analysis near me, found a lovely lady and scheduled a one on be appointment for later in the month. I’ll let you know how it goes.

    Have a wonderful weekend.

  2. Yes, Rhoda! Please report back and I hope you enjoy the experience…be open and have fun!

  3. Whooooo hooo, Dressing in the “right colors” does make a difference.
After being open to a new season, perhaps you might consider tucking in a top or two? Gasp!
    Just kidding.
    Peace out,
    Chris

  4. Body type matters…just like color. Confident dressing means that each individual wears what works best for their individual body. Peace out, Chris.

  5. I will play! My sprinter winter client is very tall and slim. Her sharp features and dramatic style lend themselves to this sharp v neck. Her long limbs are perfect for the pleated sleeves of the bluebell top. A thin black belt and black strappy heels tie in well with chiffon skirt. We have added that lovely bag, but have chosen the black one. She has jet black beads of her grandmothers that fill the space of the v, as well as coordinating earrings. She isn’t wearing bracelets, but she does have a dressy watch with a black band; the watch case is surrounded by diamonds. Only her wedding diamond adorns her fingers. A thin black, blue, and white shawl is tucked into her bag. The pattern is reminiscent of the wild pattern of the top and dress from the display.

  6. Love this, Deborah. Thanks for starting off the actual styling challenge today!

  7. Hi Pam! I don’t wear tucked in tops either, we have similar figures. I googled House of Colour and joined their facebook page. I am considering an appointment in the summer with a consultant near me as a “me” day. Looks like fun!

  8. The Coral Crush top needs to be style for you Pamela. I see you wearing a warm tan straight leg or slimmer leg pants but not leggings. The bag in tan, your necklace with the multicolored large beads, gold hoop earrings and gold bangles on one wrist and a beautiful gold watch on the other. Nude woven flats or sandals, and a third layer with a floaty pattern ruana over the top.
The bluebell knit top is definitely one my favorite meteorologist, Merry Mathews would wear on the nightly news. She favors those puffed pleated sleeves and is a blond with a curvy figure. She would wear a black pencil skirt, black tights and kitten heels also in black. I can’t see her feet on screen but that is my guess. She would wear silver delicate earrings and a silver watch. She is very fun but professional so no necklace is necessary.
The abstract print is unattractive to my eye so I will pass on it.

  9. Thank you DeborahLM for identifying your style client as a Sprinter Winter. I looked up the term and yes, this combination would be a good one for her. I like the way you styled her and must admit that I was stumped. On my laptop the blue top appeared to be a muted summer color. Looking at it now on my good desktop monitor I can see that it is closer to Periwinkle. I will also pass on the print as I am not a fan. Pamela, I think the coral top would be lovely for you. I look forward to seeing your transformation to a Spring palette. I would love to have another in person session as it has been more than 30 years since my initial draping. I looked up House of Colour and there is a consultant who is not too distant. I’m giving it some serious consideration.

  10. I would put a chunky paper clip chain necklace in gold with this outfit. Simple gold hoop earrings. Nude pumps. Cream cardigan over the shoulder. Simple but classy.

  11. I hope you are able to go, Kathie…let me know and please share your results!

  12. Hi Pam, I can’t wait to see your Spring transformation especially using the clothes that are already in your closet. You said that some of your clothes can transfer over. In reading everyone’s responses yesterday I got the bug to redo my colors as well. My MIL gifted me a Color Me Beautiful drape 32 years ago. My closet now is about 95% summer colors and I do not think I have changed color pallets. I took out my color wallet this morning to review and googled my town, and I see that there is a House of Color here. I really want to see the make up for my colors, I just remember it working so well for my complexion, of course I was 30 years old.
Anyway, I am styling the multi colored dress with the matching top, but the top is open and worn as a jacket. Since it is a lot of color, the belt would be the same color as the purple in the dress and of course the ballet flats are the same exact purple color. The earrings are simple drop down rhinestones with a small purple stone in them. I believe the small amount of purple would off set the matching busy dress/ jacket combo. And of course this will be worn to a day Springtime wedding.
Enjoy the rest of the day.

  13. The Donna Karan DKNY blue top definitely is for my tall friend. Because the sleeves bring attention immediately I would suggest she wear a simple black aline skirt or black slacks. A silver cross or heart on a delicate chain and large hoop earrings. Black flats with pointed toes would be great. Sunday brunch would complete a morning after church.

  14. As I am reading that the skirt on the mannequin may actually be that of the DKNY ‘Ribbed/Handkerchief Hemline’ one, I would recommend my friend to pair it with a simplistic top so as not to compete with its details and perhaps if monchromatic give the illusion of a dress. i.e.: A simple sleeveless tank style, worn with a statement necklace or stacked ones with footwear and bag reflecting said choice being casual (flat/tote) or elevated (heeled/structured). Whereas for the top due to the pleated sleeve head it would broaden her narrow shoulder width and balance out her hips creating an hour-glass shape if paired with a flat front/mid rise bottom (shorts/pants/skirt). Also its v-neck line would give the illusion of a longer neck/torso and though the sleeve length would provide the desired arm coverage caution would be used not draw attention to her not so slender waist line. In other words, regardless if she decided to wear it tucked in or wear it out, the sleeve length might require a slight adjustment. As to accessories; I feel the choice in bottoms would be the deciding factor for her. -Brenda-

  15. I’m late to the party, but was inspired by this collection and still wanted to play. It actually looked to me like a capsule wardrobe we might see on The Vivienne Files – the colors, the patterns and the coordinated pieces. She usually starts with a scarf, but here the print comes in larger doses. Somehow that got me thinking this would be the perfect travel capsule for a tall, willowy brunette. She has a business meeting in a more artsy field (interior designer, perhaps?) and is staying over the weekend for some personal leisure travel. She would combine all these pieces in unique ways, such as wearing the print shirt tied over the halter dress to add sleeves. I am assuming we can also incorporate the pieces shown on the wall display, so she would add that moto jacket for an edgier feel, using it to top everything from the black pleated skirt to the black leggings. She would also top the halter dress with the blue sweater for a more casual skirt look with more coverage. As someone else mentioned, she brings that gorgeous purse in black, because she has a very classic vibe. She keeps her accessories very minimal and lets these statement pieces do most of the talking. I can just imagine her confidently striding through the airport in the moto jacket over the blue sweater and skinny black pants with ankle boots, or walking into her client’s office wearing the long sleeve blouse with the black skirt and moto jacket. If it’s cool weather she will add black tights and the ankle boots; if it’s warm enough for bare legs she will wear a killer pair of black stiletto pumps. She turns heads wherever she goes in these pieces, and everyone is pretty sure she has a personal stylist. Thanks for encouraging us to think in new ways about outfits we would never wear. It’s good to stretch our imaginations a bit!

  16. Thank you for joining in…I love The Viivienne Files! Thanks for giving her a shout out!
