Books I Read Again and Again

Throughout my reinvention and the life of this blog, I have read many excellent books which delivered guidance and inspiration.  There are a handful I have on a special bookcase which I read time and time again.  So, today I am sharing one of those with you….

The Essentials of Fabulous by Ellen Lubin-Sherman is one of the first books I read when I began a new focus on the second half of life.  She said so many things which resonated with me in taking me from the frumpy doldrums of my working mother/teacher life to a new level of living and direction.  Here are some of my favorite quotes:

What does she mean by fabulous:  “well, fabulous is a strategy. A viewpoint. An attitude about life.  It’s chain-mail armor, discipline, and a commitment to being generous and open, straightforward and real.  It is about loving yourself, believing in your abilities, and then going after everything you want without compromising on manners, good taste, ethics, and charm.  It’s about being resilient and having fun, no matter how many curve-balls life throws at you.’

“Get up in the morning determined to make the day fun and productive. And wear your most gorgeous clothes – save nothing!  Looking good, thinking beautiful thoughts, and acting as if you were the most sensual creature on the planet is the most effective way to mastermind the narrative of you life.”

“A great attitude is even more youth enhancing than Botox.  It trumps wrinkles, creaky knees, and a tendacy to repeat pointless anecdotes.”

“Purpose encourages risk – taking a chance, calling someone for support, reinventing your fashion look – and discovering that the easiest way to recharge your batteries is to just keep setting higher goals.”

In between these four quotes, there is a lot of meat.  I still read and recommend this book!  Find it HERE FOR A SONG….

IT”S NATIONAL SMILE DAY…KEEP SMILING, EVERYONE!

  1. I’m so glad I saw this today. “It’s about being resilient and having fun no matter how many curve balls life throws at you.” I had a big one tossed earlier this week and needed to see this. I have been sinking into the abyss and this jolted me “awake”. I’m going to have this book delivered to my Kindle after I finish typing this! This one phrase jumped off the page and I realize that this (situation) too shall pass. Instead of hiding under a blanket, I’m going to make a point of getting out in the park this weekend for a long walk enjoying the fall colors.

  2. “Wear the pearls and use the china/crystal”, a favorite mantra a friend and I quote to each other all the time.

  3. We all need a jolt every now and then Karen…life is heavy…especially this week. I think you will enjoy the book.

  4. Thanks Pam for the recommendation, I will order it tonight. My mother never used her nice china, silverware or jewelry and I knew it was something I wanted to do when I had my own house. We use my grandmother’s silverware everyday, pearls are definitely worn and I enjoy all the antiques that were in my family. I can’t wait to read this book, have a great weekend!

  5. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did, Annette. We have to remind ourselves to enjoy each moment of each day, Happy Weekend!
