Two main reasons for thrift shopping right now

reasons for thrift shopping

Happy fashion Friday, all!  Today, I am sharing why I believe there are two main reasons for thrift shopping right now.

I am someone who can always find reasons for thrift shopping, but I do believe amidst all the current sales there are a couple of main reasons.

The reasons for thrift shopping that are always good for me are:

  1. It’s a fun treasure hunt.
  2. You can save money.
  3. You can find unique accessories, and other special pieces if your style adjectives are creative or dramatic…like me!
  4.  Occasionally, you can walk away with a high end, designer brand for next to nothing.

Allow me to expand these reasons and show you the two main reasons for thrift shopping right now.

TWO MAIN REASONS FOR THRIFT SHOPPING RIGHT NOW: CURRENT STYLES

reasons for thrift shopping

#1 OF THE REASONS FOR THRIFT SHOPPING NOW….KEEPING YOUR STYLE CURRENT

I have discovered one of the most affordable ways to look current and have fun with fashion is to thrift shop.

I found this knit, Chico’s cropped jacket in the spring time (with tags still on) and priced at $19.

It has been a nice addition to my spring and summer wardrobe.

Besides cropped jackets, I have seen metallics, polka dots, stripes, olive green, boho chic (including Johnny Was and Farm Rio), and the majority of the 2024 Fashion Trends we have discussed on Saturdays at thrift stores.

Much of fashion is cyclical so thrift makes sense when shopping to look current.

Recently when I stopped by my favorite place, I saw many leopard items.

NOTE: I am wearing my thrift find with my CHICO’S PULL-ON DRAWSTRING WIDE LEG JEANS.

TWO MAIN REASONS FOR THRIFT SHOPPING RIGHT NOW: EXPANDING YOUR SHOPPING EXPERIENCE

#2 OF THE REASONS FOR THRIFT SHOPPING NOW….EXPANDING YOUR SHOPPING EXPERIENCE

I have shared before that this book, Parisian Chic really helped me in my 50s when I was re-inventing my style.

Ines de la Fressange gave guidelines that we east for me to understand and relate to

One was her confessions that she often shops in Menswear….because of the quality and fit.

The only place I have ever shopped menswear is when thrift shopping.

This is one way I have expanded my shopping experience while thrifting.

When I visited recently, there was a large rack of cashmere sweaters.

It is difficult for me to justify spending big bucks on cashmere when I live in a warmer climate…and the prices on these top brand cashmere sweaters were shocking.

Though I did not purchase one that day, I certainly considered it and if I lived in a cooler climate, I might have taken one or two home.

You may have the same experience right now at local thrift shops…it is worth the look.

The one I tried on here was a little small, but was a Neiman Marcus brand for $11.00 and in perfect condition.

I know other women locally who shop thrift stores in menswear for quality tee shirts, sweaters and blazers.

Those are my main reasons for thrift shopping right now.

REASONS FOR THRIFT SHOPPING AND FOR SALE SHOPPING

Before I leave today, I wanted to show you another find in the Talbots Red Door Sale.

Right now through end of day Sunday, you can get an additional 50% off and then 40% off through July 24.

I watched KATE CARDIGAN for a long time, and was able to add it to my cooler weather wear for a song.

I had on my jeggings when I decided to show this to you, but will wear it with my trouser jeans, and various pants…it can dress up or down and I love the gold metallic threads in it.

Has anyone else shopped menswear for their styles…either in thrift or regular retail?

Please share if you have and what success you found…also if you want to add to the reasons for thrift shopping, please do.

Tomorrow…another 2024 fashion trend…until then….

  1. Love that Kate jacket on you! Sadly it is sold out of my size. I have to make a return in the store this morning. I will sneak another peak. I love combing through menswear for myself as I do appreciate a menswear vibe. Thanks for the reminder. Don’t forget the jewelry. I had company last week and we stopped at an antique barn. A woman outside had 4 kiddie pools that she had dumped a ton of bagged jewelry in. They were overflowing. I bought 3 bracelets ( one was 3 or 4 round leather leopard attached strips with gold magnetic clasp), 1 3-strands bronze chains with autumn colored beads, and 2 rings. Everything was 50 cents each. I paid 3 $. My college chum spent 20$. She bought Christmas gifts and lots of beaded items. She takes them apart and uses them on the ties for the Coptic journals that she makes and markets. What a haul! I love thrift shopping.

  2. Oh yes! Accessories! I have found so many in the past…true treasure hunts! Happy Friday, Deborah!

  3. I love a good find-I’ve gotten a very nice brown leather jacket (needed a new zip but easily done), a St John navy blazer sweater that retailed for $800.00 that I bought for $70, and my latest was in France, a vintage long sleeve shirt printed with leaf motifs and gorgeous buttons for 15 euro. I also buy lots of cheap flower vases to give away arrangements in during the year when my flower garden overflows.

  4. I’ve only been to. Goodwill Store once recently, but did find two Land’s End sweaters for $6.77 each. I wore them often last winter when I walked every day. I keep saying I do not NEED anything right now, and thus, have avoided all the summer sales, but I keep thinking I’ll go to a consignment store and just look since she advertises cute things. As you said, it’s a treasure hunt and fun! Your short Chico’s jacket is a nice buy.

  5. Thrift shopping is great. I recently bought a Brooks Bros button down shirt, perfect condition, for $2. Whoo-hoo!! ⁰

  6. Good Morning, and Happy Friday! 🌻
For some reason, I missed the post yesterday, but read this morning with interest. One of my friends has a standing appointment every four weeks for a full waxing of her very fine blonde facial hair. She loves going, and schedules her root touch-ups and mani/pedi at the same salon for a mini spa day. I do my peach fuzz in the shower a couple times a month, something I started about 20 years back. Anyway!!! You look fantastic in that Kate cardigan, which I had considered a few months back. Some of the reviews were quite critical though, so that deterred me. I have a little mad birthday cash, so maybe.
I don’t shop thrift because in our small rural town, the selections are so few and far between. And then when I go to a big city, I make a beeline to my favorite regular retailers.

  7. I love thrift store shopping too! My main reasons are: the fun of hunting for hidden treasures, convenience (there are no other clothing shops in my small rural town), great prices, and the fact that it’s an ethical way to shop, giving new life to someone else’s cast offs instead of having them end up in the landfill.

  8. Living in the UK we all tend to shop in charity shops which tend to have much cheaper 2nd-hand clothes than even on sales at ‘standard’ clothes shops . “Oxfam” shops used to be the most numerous but they have become much more expensive and arguably exploit their volunteers . I used to get beautiful things at one in a nearby town but the best stuff is now being sold to collectors – since the aim of a charity is to raise money . The best things I bought were 3 silk velvet jackets (black , navy and bottle green) . The worst were shoes . I don’t think 2nd hand shoes EVER really fit !

  9. I agree with Elaine, reduce, reuse, recycle!

In regards to menswear, I find the quality better, the cost lower and the colors more sophisticated. Unfortunately, men’s’ clothing doesn’t fit my body type. I have purchased men’s winter scarves.

Two additional reasons to thrift are to (inexpensively) test out a new color or style. I live in slim jeans, but this summer I thrifted cargo style pants in a looser cut to see how I liked them.

  10. I don’t ever try on the shoes…something about it doesn’t sit well with me.

  11. I agree with you, Pam, about the shoes, unless of course, they’re brand new. I’ve heard that it’s not a good idea, since the shoe has conformed to the foot of the one who wore it and that likely won’t provide a proper fit and support for your feet. Then there’s the question of hygiene. 🤷🏻‍♀️ I otherwise shop consignment shops regularly and at least half of my wardrobe has been purchased from them.

  12. Hi Pam,

I love thrift shopping. I seldom buy retail anymore. I have picked up cashmere sweaters at Goodwill, a Theory blazer, Ann Taylor, Loft, and Talbots items too. I have not shopped the mens department at Goodwill for myself. I am too small. But, I do shop for my husband. A department that I did not see mentioned is kids. I am a misses size 6, but I can sometimes wear a girls size xl, or 14 – 16. I have several pairs of leggings from the girls section of Goodwill. I recently got a bright blue windbreaker from the boys department. I have learned that size labels are so variable that I am better off eyeballing an item to see if it might fit than relying on the size label. Of course, I am a firm believer in trying on everything!

  13. I didn’t mention kids, because I never think of shopping it for myself …just for grandchildren. How fun that you can do that Kathy. I always try on at the thrift store and do not shop the ones without nice dressing rooms. Fortunately many in San Antonio have them.

  14. My older daughter is 37 and has been thrifting since she was 14. When she was in grad school she was asked to interview with St John. She got the job with them wearing a totally thrifted outfit. The team interviewing her kept commenting about how chic she looked! She and I love to thrift together. She usually has people following her and even asking her to help them decide which pieces flatter them. We have thrifted St John, Johnny Was, Eileen Fisher, Lily Pulitzer among other quality brands. She can scan a rack and immediately pull out fabulous finds. Most of our wardrobes come from our thrifting adventures. We also have David Yurman bracelets and beautiful vintage bags from thrifting. We cannot believe the things people donate. We are addicted to the hunt!
