  1. Good morning! I enjoyed the article about bringing back frugal habits. Many of them also involve being with your family and friends in a more personal way, which is enriching in more than just money!

My husband and I own a small jewelry store, and we believe that the use of credit cards has contributed to a lack of knowledge and control of one’s finances. When you charge everything you sometimes don’t even pay attention to how much it costs. In the days when we carried cash, you either could buy something or you couldn’t.

Recently my husband was waiting on a young man who was choosing an engagement ring. The customer asked if we offered financing. My husband explained that the finance companies charge a high interest rate, so we don’t offer that, and suggested that he open a credit card with a no-interest introductory period, to finance the ring. Since the customer was not planning to get engaged for many months, my husband also said, “And of course, you can always save up for it.”

The young man looked at my husband in amazement. “That’s a good idea!” like he had never heard of that.
Returning to some frugal ways, like saving up for things, can make us really decide if we want or need those things.

Just my thoughts on this very rainy Wednesday morning, Pamela. I love your blog and read it every morning at 5:30 to get me started on my day. I hope you have a good one!

  2. Good morning, Delia! Thank you for sharing these excellent thoughts this morning! So sad that saving for a major purchase would be a unique idea.

  3. I enjoyed the 41 Modern Traditional Living Room Ideas–I think that’s the way to go these days. Keeping traditional pieces that have stood the test of time mixed with more modern pieces, so we don’t look like a museum.

  4. Morning! I purchased the trail size of cleansing oil and am not sure what I’m supposed to do with it. The instruction say a drop, but it’s totally liquid and just runs through my hands before I can get it onto my face.
The sunscreen feels wonderful and I’ll continue use to use it since living in southeast Texas- sunscreen is a necessity.

  5. Hi Rhoda, First I wet my face. Then I put a dollop of the oil in the palm of my hand, rub it with two hands and then pat on to my face. It feels and works great ….and is so good for removing makeup. Enjoy!

  6. I love Wednesdays and your ‘news’ roundup. In your intro, though, you mention difficult headlines “more than ever before,” and I want to push back on that. Just think about some of the turmoil we’ve lived through. You are usually so optimistic, and there is also a lot to be optimistic about. Just read your own Sunday posts! I find climate change, fires and floods, to be really frightening, but I am going to be optimistic that we Americans will figure out solutions if we work together.

  7. Actually, Maeve, I am good…I trust God with everything and my hope, joy and optimism is very strong. I was reacting to some who have asked me how I ignore what is happening in the world and in news headlines. I am a trained, degreed journalist and taught traditional journalism for 16 years, so I read literally everything. I just wanted to reassure those who have spoken to me that I avoid controversy…such as the environment…and I want to bring you news that is helpful in these areas of your life. I don’t need to read what I wrote on Sunday…I LIVE what I wrote on Sunday. One of the most difficult things I do is to avoid the controversy…my beliefs are core to who I am. God will figure out our challenges with the environment and I trust HIM completely to do so. He’s got this…and you are right to see that we have come through turmoil before.
I just wanted to add that I do appreciate you caring about what I wrote…I am still optimistic me.

  8. I appreciate this news roundup. I have always loved a mix of old and new furniture, so loved the living room images. Another way to save money is to make your own greeting cards. While the scrapbooking hobby has faded somewhat, you can still find many interesting supplies even at thrift stores and make nice cards. With the average birthday card costing between $4 to $5 dollars, I save a good bit of cash making my own. I do love a beautiful professional card, but for many occasions, my hand-mades are just fine.

  9. I think hand made is even more special than store bought. Good for you, Mary!

  10. Frugality has been on my mind a lot lately. Living in probably the most expensive state (CA) in the country, I have seen my fixed income buying less and less each month. I’m reminded of my mother and how she stretched her food dollars; my big pet peeve is tossing food so I’m recreating leftovers as much as I can which really can be a very creative process. Blessed with a husband who eats anything & everything I put before him it has not been too difficult. Great articles, Pam! Thank you!

  11. Thanks for sharing, Linda. Mr. B is getting better about leftovers, but it has been a process.
